Happy, Healthy, Safe and Peaceful 2021 to my dear Yoga Students,
Meandering around my house this morning, quite frankly, feeling a bit down, trapped, bored (you get the idea), I reached for my phone and searched our local library database for some inspiration. I came across a book called The Art of Flaneuring: How to Wonder with Intention and Discover a Better Life by Erika Owen. It made so much sense to me since, I realized, I have always been a sort of Flaneur without really knowing it or without the intention to be one. I immediately knew this was no coincidence. I got myself dressed and out the door knowing the incoming prediction of rain would dampen this adventure.
I found myself in Port Jefferson and allowed my dog, Sonny, to take the lead. After all, a curious dog is by nature a Flaneur. Even though I have walked through Port Jeff a million times, I found myself stopping and really seeing the old houses, the brick and stone walls, curves in the street; I was really seeing it for the first time. As sonny stopped numerous times to explore a particularly intoxicating scent, I greeted fellow walkers, gazed inside store fronts, read menus, considered the slants of hills and streets and ended up at the Farmer’s Market (a great place for Flaneuring). My boredom lifted, my mind quieted and my gratitude and joy became the center of my thoughts.
It is with this intention, I plan to walk into the new decade. Without expectation, enjoying the scenery, allowing my intuition and viveka (Discernment) to lead the way and take time for Flaneuring outdoors every day if possible. The art of wandering without a definitive destination is to purposely explore your surroundings with curiosity without expectation in much the same way I encourage you to be in your yoga practice; curious, attentive, detail oriented with a willingness to be pleasantly surprised at what you find.
As always, thank you so very much for allowing me to bring yoga and meditation into your lives! May peace and joy follow (or lead) you into 2021, may you find the time on purpose just to be and explore wherever life takes you. Looking forward to seeing you on the screen or possibly for a group Flaneuring outing real soon. Stay tuned for details coming forth for a Imbolc Virtual Retreat !
