Happy New Year dear Yoga Students,

We had a wonderful time at the Kirtan last Friday night and I was amazed how free and happy I felt the next day!  The energy has stayed with me all weekend.  I was particularly taken with the moment we chanted to “our struggles” during Hari Om Tat Sat which translates as we bow to the truth of all that is sacred.  Our struggles are part of our sacred path.  Just like moving into the darkness from Autumn Equinox to Winter Solstice, it is part of the sacred cycle of our lives to move in and out and forward and back again.  Hopefully we learn to grow,  to leave behind what doesn’t serve us, take with us the lessons and honor the journey.  Here we are, beautiful yogi’s, at the start of a brand new year.  May you all and all beings find peace within your darkness and may we all honor the ever increasing light together as we travel this life together.

“My beloved child, break your heart no longer.
Each time you judge yourself, you break your own heart.
You stop feeding on the love which is the wellspring of your vitality.
The time has come.

Your time.  To celebrate.

And to see the goodness that you are.
You my child, are divine. You are pure. You are sublimely free.
You are God in disguise. And you are always perfectly safe.
Do not fight the dark. Just turn on the light.
Let go, And breathe into the goodness that you are.”

We will discover the nature of our particular genius when we stop trying to conform to our own or other people’s models, learn to be ourselves,
and allow our natural channel to open.”
Shaki Gawain

Like so many yoga practices, svadhyaya is the study of the self.  Yoga asana, pranayama, and meditation are all ways to peel off the layers of our false selves and dive in to our authenticity.   To guide us in this process, we can turn again and again to those spiritual teachers that inspire us.  They are there in books, in music, in our dreams, in nature or maybe sitting right across from us at work, home or in our community.  The more open and compassionate to our own “particular genius” that we can become, the more our “natural channels” to the divine open and our dharma (life’s purpose) is revealed.

Join us for a beautiful evening of healing and sharing energy. All are welcome whether you are new to Reiki, a Reiki practitioner, or just curious to know what it’s all about. Reiki is an ancient healing modality and is non-invasive. The healing energy is channeled through the hands of the practitioner to the receiver. Reiki calms the nervous system, releases muscle tension and emotional imbalances. Reiki enhances the body’s own capacity for healing love and light. Contact me for location details if you have never been to my space. Suggested donation $10 per person. If possible bring something to be donated to our local food pantry.

On Children

Kahlil Gibran

Your children are not your children. They are the sons and daughters of Life’s longing for itself. They come through you but not from you, And though they are with you yet they belong not to you.

You may give them your love but not your thoughts, For they have their own thoughts. You may house their bodies but not their souls, For their souls dwell in the house of tomorrow, which you cannot visit, not even in your dreams. You may strive to be like them, but seek not to make them like you. For life goes not backward nor tarries with yesterday.

You are the bows from which your children as living arrows are sent forth. The archer sees the mark upon the path of the infinite, and He bends you with His might that His arrows may go swift and far. Let our bending in the archer’s hand be for gladness; For even as He loves the arrow that flies, so He loves also the bow that is stable.

Happy Mother’s Day Dearest Yoga Students,

Whether you are a mother, grandmother, son or daughter – we all have something wonderful to celebrate today; unconditional love.  Think about that term for a minute.  The Wikipedia definition is:  Unconditional Love   is a term that means to love someone regardless of one’s actions or beliefs.  Unconditional love separates the individual from her or his behaviors. The individual is loved unconditionally as a “perfect” child of the Higher Power.

Revel in what it feels like to be loved without conditions, without judgement with pure loving kindness for who you are.   Focus on the gratitude you have for all the mothers in your life past and present;  your birth mother, a friend, a sister, a diety, a mentor …and then recycle all the love you have been given as an offering to the universe.  Meditate on the amazing creation of life and the cycles that continue on and on and on.  Sa Ta Na Ma…Life, Death, Rebirth and Infinity.

Yoga this Week – January 28, 2018

“Life is a Learning Curve” is the quote my 19 year old snowboarding, drumming, stay-up-all-niter college freshman decided to get tattooed on his inner forearm next to the autism puzzle piece in honor of his older brothers journey navigating life on the spectrum.

Image may contain: one or more people and closeup

These days we have a habit of saying that quote often when we come up against something new, hard, difficult, exciting or confusing. Life IS a learning curve. Do we ever stop learning? Transitions, pain, sorrow, winning, defeat, even success all have a learning curve at their core and what make up a growing life.  After all, wouldn’t the drive just be a tedious ride if all the roads were straight? It really are those curves that drive us forward, empowering and creating empathy, compassion and resilience as we tackle each one.   Like waves on the ocean the learning will keep rolling in. Some of the waves will be easy,  rolling gently and slowly onto the shore and some will crash us right from behind and slam us down on our backs. It’s all a learning, a moving forward, through and back and forth again.   Whenever you hear that inner critic or that debilitating fear rise up” that tells you “you can’t handle this” try and repeat the mantra “Life is a Learning Curve” ; tattoo it on your arm if you need to and remind yourself you are not supposed to have all the answers and that learning is gives your life meaning your your heart a chance soar.

Dearest Yoga Students,

Many changes continue to take place in all of our lives.  Some welcome and some not so welcome, however, I have found they always do lead to an opening, a shift that takes shape and becomes something new and wonderful to explore.  Our yoga practice helps us to learn to meet changes head on with steadiness and ease.  We can take a breath, hold our pose with tenderness and watch the changes take place.  Yoga teaches us that our lives, our bodies  and our minds are malleable, shapeable and that we are never stuck.  We can grow, adapt and become more courageous than we ever thought we could when we let go of fear and walk through that doorway of change.

Yoga this Week – April 24, 2017

What we’re trying to do in yoga is to create a union, and so to deepen a yoga pose is to actually increase the union of the pose, not necessarily put your leg around your head.

~Rodney Yee

See full size image

Each time we come to our mats, we have a chance to explore interconnection. We begin with our breath and move into our bodies, but it doesn’t stop there. As we create connection with a pose, we adjust, consider, explore, become present and breathe into the experience. We soften into the edges of the pose and watch them dissolve as we flow moment to moment; this might very well lead you to “put your leg around your head”  Integration, alignment and breath leads you deeper into your body, into the mystery.    As you move into this day, feel into the energy around you. Integrate, align and breath within the moments and see if you can increase the most important connection of all; the present.
