Yoga this Week – January 28, 2018

“Life is a Learning Curve” is the quote my 19 year old snowboarding, drumming, stay-up-all-niter college freshman decided to get tattooed on his inner forearm next to the autism puzzle piece in honor of his older brothers journey navigating life on the spectrum.

Image may contain: one or more people and closeup

These days we have a habit of saying that quote often when we come up against something new, hard, difficult, exciting or confusing. Life IS a learning curve. Do we ever stop learning? Transitions, pain, sorrow, winning, defeat, even success all have a learning curve at their core and what make up a growing life.  After all, wouldn’t the drive just be a tedious ride if all the roads were straight? It really are those curves that drive us forward, empowering and creating empathy, compassion and resilience as we tackle each one.   Like waves on the ocean the learning will keep rolling in. Some of the waves will be easy,  rolling gently and slowly onto the shore and some will crash us right from behind and slam us down on our backs. It’s all a learning, a moving forward, through and back and forth again.   Whenever you hear that inner critic or that debilitating fear rise up” that tells you “you can’t handle this” try and repeat the mantra “Life is a Learning Curve” ; tattoo it on your arm if you need to and remind yourself you are not supposed to have all the answers and that learning is gives your life meaning your your heart a chance soar.

Accept the things to which fate binds you, and love the people with whom fate brings you together, but do so with all your heart. ~
                                               Marcus Aelius Aurelius

Greetings dear yoga students,

Hoping this email finds you fostering a sense of grateful anticipation for the day and week ahead.  Acceptance of life circumstances does not mean to give in, give up or throw in the towel.  Acceptance is looking at what fate has brought to your door, examining the facts with an open heart and clear mind and then from deep within gather the courage to  do what you need or do – which in some instances is the courage to do absolutely nothing.  Whenever we are at odds with something, feel “off-kilter” or are experiencing anxiety, it usually can be traced back to our inability to accept what is happening in the present moment.  The moment we begin to trade our expectations in for acceptance, we experience a shift in perspective and sometimes, as if miraculously,   the limits begin to fade or change shape..  Acceptance enables us enjoy the senery of our lives the way it is, even if it is not what we expected.  So dive in to the present moment of your life today and meditate on the areas that you meet with resistance;  breathe a compassionate breath, bless your circumstances, love the people who join you on your journey with all your heart and find the peace and serenity that comes with true acceptance.

Yoga this Week – January 27, 2013

The winds of grace are blowing all the time. You have only to raise your sail. –Sri Ramakrishna

Anja Chakra located in between the eyebrows often referred to as the Third Eye. When this chakra opens it is like a gateway allowing divine wisdom to enter our minds. Like the wind it is always there waiting, all you have to do is allow it to flow.
The symbol of OM in the center of the chakra represents the unleased energy of the Kundulini Snake rising upward. The crescent moon of feminine receptivity embraces the circle above it. This circle is a golden dot which is the essence of spiritual energy. It represents being in your center. When we chant the mantra “OM” we are embracing all of this universal divine energy, OM brings the ego self into union with the spirit self.
When the the ego realizes that the fulfillment of its highest dreams is only to be found through merging with the Higher Self, the false masks the ego has created fall away and who you thought you were or who you thought you ought to be lose their grip. Suddenly you let go and your true self shines forth.  So Hum,  ” I am what I am” There is no guilt, no need for illusion or pretense. You are totally in the present and you realize that  the you you have been seeking has been  there all along.

If I can stop one heart from breaking, I shall not live in vain. If I can ease one life the aching, or cool one pain, or help one fainting robin unto his nest again I shall not live in vain. ~ Emily Dickinson

The message in the above quote is powerful and simple; Emerge from your own suffering and be of service in any small way and your life will have meaning and your heart will be full.  Never doubt what small acts of kindness can accomplish.  As long as we are guided by love and desire for service, let us never doubt ourselves and the path that we forge in our lives.
Kishori, our guest student and teacher, who after leaving India immersed in the yogic culture and found her way to our humble yoga room,  will be continuing on in her travels.  I thank her for inspiring us with her inner and outer beauty and knowledge.  She has expressed great gratitude to have found our precious yoga community and a space that encourages peace, empowerment, healing and sangha within the secular world we live in.   May we continue to encourage and support each other on this path.
Try not to skimp on your practice  as the darkness begins to envelope our days and the busy days of December come upon us.  Optimum health is the key to a happy and joyous season.

“We need to awaken to a common consciousness of all being inhabitants
of Earth. This consciousness is not to be found in some distant place. It will not be found on a computer screen. It lies in our hearts, in our ability to share the pain of our fellow human beings. It is the spirit that says:
“As long as you are suffering, whoever you are and whatever your suffering may be, I suffer also.”
Daisaku Ikeda
Hoping this email finds you all safe and sound. As I had mentioned to those of you who were in class this week, my home is open to anyone in need of a hot shower, electronic charging, laundry or just a some tea, coffee or company. It is so important that we know we can rely on each other for support for whatever we may need. The Shoreham Fire Department is collecting canned goods, clothing and toiletrees for hurricane relief to be distributed to those in need. You can also stop in there to pick up items if needed.
Keep praying for those whose Sandy’s devastation will linger; which for many will be much longer than a week, a month or even year. We are all so vulnerable to the fate that others have suffered. May you sincerely count your blessings and be aware of the abundance you have in your life.

Satya – To seek and honor the truth in yourself, others and the world

(Sat-Truth + Ya-that which is of the essence)

“Probably the hardest form of this practice [commitment to satya] is being true to our own heart and inner destiny. Confusion and mistrust of our inner values can make it difficult to know the nature of our heart’s desire, but even when we become clear enough to recognize what truth means for us, we may lack the courage and conviction to live our truth. Following what we know to be essential for our growth may mean leaving unhealthy relationships or jobs and taking risks that jeopardize our own comfortable position. It may mean making choices that are not supported by consensual reality or ratified by the outer culture. The truth is rarely convenient. One way we can know we are living the truth is that while our choices may not be easy, at the end of the day we feel at peace with ourselves”

Donna Fhari

Greetings Dear Yoga Students,

Hope this email finds you well, embracing the truth of your life whatever is put before you at this moment. I hope you enjoyed practicing ahimsa (non-violence) and that you continue to do so as the year moves forward for Ahimsa is at the core of all yogic practices.
We now come to our second out of five yamas: Satya (truthfullness) which requires clear seeing, courage and steadfastness. Try and be aware of situations in which you tend to color or deny the truth with yourself or others. Be aware without judgement if you think another is bending what you believe to be the truth taking into consideration that we only see the world through our own individual lense. Practing satya is having the courage and faith to first clear your own lense and then act on what you see with a compassionate heart.

Keep Coming Back

Keep coming back to your breath
Keep coming back to your body
Keep coming back to who you really are.

No matter what life puts before you, keep coming back to all the beauty around you, to all the love inside you, to what really matters.  Even if you stray a thousand and one times, keep coming back to the truth of who you really are.  Keep coming back to the eternal, internal essence of you.  Keep coming back to what you know to be true; that the compassion you hold in your heart is meant as much for you as for every living being.  Keep coming back to all the love inside you.

“The most effective way to reduce health costs is to reduce demand,
and the easiest way to do that is by Self-Care.”

                                          Leonard Perlmutter

Hari Om dear yoga students,

Taking time for yourself, right here and now, is what will be most important to your physical, mental and spiritual future.  You most likely have heard many people (or yourself) proclaim “I don’t have the time to take care of myself…I’m just too busy with other demands to fit it in”.  This is truly an ironic statement.  The way I see it is that if we do not find the time for self care today, we will certainly be forced into taking the time later to nurse ourselves back to health (body, mind or spirit) in the future.  So in this day that we call the present, take any amount of time you can spare and do something nurturing for yourself.  Whatever is most appropriate for you today; read something spiritual, funny or uplifting, bundle up and take a walk, do some yoga, make a healthy meal,  take a hot bath or simply slow down the pace and practice being present.  Build up some self-care in the bank of your life and watch how your investment grows, rospers and spills on to everyone in your life.

I will be taking my own advice this week as I travel across the country to Esalen at Big Sur in California to attend a five-day yoga retreat.  My hope is to release, renew and bring some interesting techniques back to all of you!!

Have a wonderful self-nurturing week!!
