“In the confrontation between the stream and the rock, the stream always wins – not through strength, but through persistence”

                                   ~Buddha

Hari Om Dearest Yoga Students,

Hoping this message finds you enjoying the first signs of the new season that surely awaits us.   Think about the perseverance and patience that nature is gifted with.  The small bulbs that wait silently underground, the perennials that lay dormant waiting for the cues that it is time to begin their work of opening, pushing, growing up out of the dark earth into the light.  Nature does not give up, it finds a way to regenerate.  The natural world knows what needs to be done and does not question its role in its lifetime.  Experiencing the persistent and reliable cycles of nature  fills me with hope,  joy and faith that we too can rise above our difficult, dormant or hard times and shine in all our glory when the time is right.

It doesn’t just take talent, intellect or luck for great people to do great things;  Most often, it is simply the persistence and perseverance of doing the next right thing, showing up  and suiting up, waiting patiently when we have exhausted our efforts, or getting on the yoga mat in spite of ourselves.    We too must learn the lesson of  persistence as we confront situations in our lives where we are either forced to wait or forced to gather all our faith to keep hanging on day in and day out, dangling on the edge of vulnerability.   We are all capable of greatness in our own unique way.

sunflower om

The Yoga Sutras tell us is it the obstacles that lead us into a deeper understanding of ourselves which in turn allows to become deeply connected to others as well as the divine force that flows in and out of everything.  Directly confronting our difficulties with clarity, compassion and persistence creates freedom.  Freedom in knowing you are never really trapped in any situation.  For today, see if you can change your perspective to any “rocks” that are in your stream.  Stay focused, do the next right thing, however small it may seem, and try and find the lesson, the jewel that is hidden within.  Today, be persistent in your journey towards balance, freedom, peace and serenity.  Flow within the river of your life, patient, strong and free.

Yoga this Week – April 6, 2013

Only as a spiritual warrior can one withstand the path of knowledge. A warrior cannot complain or regret anything. His life is an endless challenge and challenges cannot possibly be good or bad. Challenges are simply challenges. The basic difference between an ordinary man and a warrior is that a warrior takes everything as a challenge, while an ordinary man takes everything
as a blessing or a curse.                                             – Don Juan
Greetings to all my peaceful warriors who week after week face the ultimate challenge of coming face to face with their bodies, minds and spirits on their yoga mats.  Breathe in the energy of spring and be present to all the love that surrounds you.

“You are seeking joy in far off places, but the spring of joy is in your heart.  The haven of peace is in yourself”

Thank you all for journeying  through the chakra system these past seven weeks with me.  As always, it is an honor and a pleasure to be able to bring these sacred teachings to you.   Our study of the body, mind and spirit with its complex movement of energy never ends.  Through asana, meditation, chanting, and spiritual studies, we learn how to be grounded, creative, powerful, compassionate, expressive and wise so we can connect to spirit and the grace thats available to us in our lives.   I stand in awe at our  body’s capacity for healing and guiding us back to wholeness; to our orginal state of equanimity, love and peace because I both know this to be true and I see it in all of you week after week as you committ to your practice and yourself.

Yoga this Week – March 31, 2013

A human being is a part of the whole called by us “the universe,” a part limited in time and space. He experiences himself, his thoughts and feelings, as something separate from the rest – a kind of optical illusion of consciousness. This delusion is a kind of prison for us, restricting us to our personal desires and affection for a few persons nearest to us. Our task must be to free ourselves from this prison by widening the circle of understanding and compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature in its beauty.” – Albert Einstein

Crown Chakra – Sahasrara – Thousand Petal Lotus

  • Color – violet, white
  • Physical Location – top of head
  • Element – Light
  • Attributes – Supreme Bliss – Samadhi
  • Purposes – intuitive knowing, connection to one’s spirituality, integration of the whole
  • Spiritual Lesson – spirituality, living in the now, unity, connection
  • Mental and Emotional Issues – discovery of the divine, lack of purpose, loss of meaning or identity, trust, selflessness, humanitarianism, ability to see the bigger picture in the life stream, devotion, inspiration, values, ethics
  • Information Stored Inside Crown Chakra – duality, magnetism, controlling patterns, emotional feelings (joy, anger, fear), empathy, compassion

Be patient toward all that is unsolved in your heart and try to love the questions themselves like locked rooms and like books that are written in a very foreign tongue. Do not now seek the answers, which cannot be given you because you would not be able to live them. And the point is, to live everything. Live the questions now. Perhaps you will find them gradually, without noticing it, and live along some distant day into the answer.

Rainer Maria Rilke

Greetings dear Yoga Students and Happy Easter to those of you who are celebrating!!

The crown chakra signifies our connection to spirit, our higher power, and our divine essence.  We feel this chakra open in those moments when we look around our life and see that everything is perfect, beautiful and harmonious.  We can also open to the power of this energy when we are struggling with difficulties, tragedies or discontent.  We can allow our divine spirit to carry us and trust that “some distant day” all will make sense again in our lives.

The energy of the Sahasrara reminds us that we are “All One” and that we can let go of that illusion of separateness.  As you feel the sun shine on your face today, make a mental note that that sun shines on every single person, flower, and blade of grass that you see without distinction.  We are all part of the same whole, whatever your spiritual belief system might include, we are all children of this universe, “no less than the trees and the stars” and we will be carried in times of great joy and times of deep despair.   Connect, plug in, listen and allow yourself to receive all the gifts that your divine spirit has to offer.  Allow Grace always…

There are joys which long to be ours.  God sends ten thousands truths, which come about us like birds seeking inlet; but we are shut up to them, and so they bring us nothing, but sit and sing awhile upon the roof, and then fly away.

“What’s Done is Done”
Shakespeare
Greetings Dearest Yoga Students,
Do not allow yourself to get stuck in the past.  What has happened is already gone.  Like the wake of a boat, it is behind you and does not have to define or determine the direction you will take.  Let go and allow what has happened to shape your future on its own.  Everything that has happened has led you to this moment.    You cannot change the past, you can look and learn but in the end you must let go and set your sights on the future.  Although the future is there wide open for anyone to change, we have a tendency to hang on to the unfulfilling wish to change the past and live with the mantra, “If only”… this simply is wasted energy.  What’s done is done…. direct your energy to the future: meditate the present,  make plans, set intentions, transform your intentions into actions and let go of anything holding you back from creating the life you were meant to live.

December 30, 2012 – Happy New Year!

“Leap, and the net will appear” John Burroughs

Celebrate, dream and allow the empty pages of the year ahead to be filled with a vision of hope, happiness, fulfillment and abundance for yourself and your life. Use this brand new beginning to let go of old ways of being that do not serve you any longer making room for new perspectives and attitudes that empower you to empower others. Much like in our yoga asanas, we ground down to rise up, letting go actually allows you move forward. So take time time to breathe into your many positive qualities and let go of negative self-judgement. Bundle up, brave the weather and go take a long walk in the fresh snow making footprints that are all your own!

“Falling down doesn’t make you a failure, but staying down does”
Greetings dearest yoga students,
As many times as we get knocked down, it is the getting up that really matters. Remember to be gentle with yourself each time something gets in your way, delays your gratification or literaly takes you down. As you look on at someone elses success, remember that most likely, countless hours of work and failures brought them to the place they are now at. To achieve excellence, you must be willing to continue with faith each time you fail. A failure does not have to be a signal that your work is done but can really mean you are one step closer towards your goal. Be willing to fail, be willing to be vulnerable, be willing to look foolish as you go confidently in the direction of your dreams.

Yoga this Week – November 25, 2012

If I can stop one heart from breaking, I shall not live in vain. If I can ease one life the aching, or cool one pain, or help one fainting robin unto his nest again I shall not live in vain. ~ Emily Dickinson

The message in the above quote is powerful and simple; Emerge from your own suffering and be of service in any small way and your life will have meaning and your heart will be full.  Never doubt what small acts of kindness can accomplish.  As long as we are guided by love and desire for service, let us never doubt ourselves and the path that we forge in our lives.
Kishori, our guest student and teacher, who after leaving India immersed in the yogic culture and found her way to our humble yoga room,  will be continuing on in her travels.  I thank her for inspiring us with her inner and outer beauty and knowledge.  She has expressed great gratitude to have found our precious yoga community and a space that encourages peace, empowerment, healing and sangha within the secular world we live in.   May we continue to encourage and support each other on this path.
Try not to skimp on your practice  as the darkness begins to envelope our days and the busy days of December come upon us.  Optimum health is the key to a happy and joyous season.

Yoga this Week – November 3, 2012

“We need to awaken to a common consciousness of all being inhabitants
of Earth. This consciousness is not to be found in some distant place. It will not be found on a computer screen. It lies in our hearts, in our ability to share the pain of our fellow human beings. It is the spirit that says:
“As long as you are suffering, whoever you are and whatever your suffering may be, I suffer also.”
Daisaku Ikeda
Hoping this email finds you all safe and sound. As I had mentioned to those of you who were in class this week, my home is open to anyone in need of a hot shower, electronic charging, laundry or just a some tea, coffee or company. It is so important that we know we can rely on each other for support for whatever we may need. The Shoreham Fire Department is collecting canned goods, clothing and toiletrees for hurricane relief to be distributed to those in need. You can also stop in there to pick up items if needed.
Keep praying for those whose Sandy’s devastation will linger; which for many will be much longer than a week, a month or even year. We are all so vulnerable to the fate that others have suffered. May you sincerely count your blessings and be aware of the abundance you have in your life.

Yoga this Week – October 28, 2012

“Compassion is not a relationship between the healer and the wounded. It’s a relationship between equals. Only when we know our own darkness well can we be present with the darkness of others. Compassion becomes real when we recognize our shared humanity.”
Pema Chodren
Hari Om Dearest Yoga Students,
There’s nothing like a good hurricane scare to help us recognize our shared humanity.  Leaning in to our own darkness, fear, humanness is truly the only way to expand our compassion for others. Having the courage to stand in our own pain and darkness allows us to open up to the immense compassion we have stored in our hearts.  It is from this opening that we reach out in true compassion for another’s pain. What is amazing to me is that in that reaching out, in that extended hand, smile, hug or encouraging word we give to another, we find the very thing that lifts our own pain and suffering.  Choose today to offer any help in whatever way you can to your neighbor, friend or family member to not only help them but to lift youself up as well.

Aparigraha
greedlessness, non-attachment

The yogi feels that the collection or hoarding of things implies a lack of faith in God and in himself to provide for the future….By the observance of aparigraha, the yogi makes his life as simple as possible and trains his mind not to feel the loss or the lack of anything. Then everything he really needs will come to him by itself at the proper time.”

Iyengar

Good Morning Dear Yoga Students,

As this Fall draws us inward I wish for your eyes to see all the abundance that you already possess right now in this moment in this time in your life. One beautiful morning this past week I walked down to the shore, a little less than a mile from my house and I was embraced with the serene beauty that was all around me. It caused me to stop and I experienced a moment that seemed to have transformed into one of those magical moments suspended in time. I paused, connected to my breath, did some simple yoga postures and sat on a piece of wood to silently sit in meditation.. As the rythmic sound of the waves made their way into my mind and the gentle warm breeze carressed my skin, I felt so completely connected to all that was around me. The feeling of abundance and gratitude seemed to encapsulate my entire being. If we take even a moment to connect with all that is precious and dear to us in our lives right now, we allow the divine light to shine into our hearts. A moment like this can change your entire day from one that is ordinary to one that is full of miracles and we seem to lack nothing.
