Kirtan Chanting & Drumming Session
Greetings dearest yoga students,
Yoga teaches us to enjoy and trust the process; to have the right intention and alignment and let go of the results. If we can simply learn to trust and have faith in our own capacity for our highest selves to show up, we may find true, uncontrived freedom of expression as well as the ability to be courageous in difficult moments. What is your vision today, can you hold that in your heart and mind and trust the process?
I had such a wonderful time joining Captain Phil at 90.1 USB Radio Station on Friday night. If you would like to give a listen to my interview, click on one of the links below. I come on at about 28 minutes in. The interview ends with one of my favorite songs by a wonderful local musician, Rory Kelly, it’s called “If You Teach a Bird to Sing” Hope you enjoy it!

These Sutras, or threads, hold a wealth of information and point us in the direction of wholeness and enlightenment. Together we will interpret sections of the sutras and read from a variety of translations. Please bring a journal, something to write with a copy of the sutras (if you have one) and an open mind ready for discussion! Light Refreshments will be served. $15

“Life is a Learning Curve” is the quote my 19 year old snowboarding, drumming, stay-up-all-niter college freshman decided to get tattooed on his inner forearm next to the autism puzzle piece in honor of his older brothers journey navigating life on the spectrum.
These days we have a habit of saying that quote often when we come up against something new, hard, difficult, exciting or confusing. Life IS a learning curve. Do we ever stop learning? Transitions, pain, sorrow, winning, defeat, even success all have a learning curve at their core and what make up a growing life. After all, wouldn’t the drive just be a tedious ride if all the roads were straight? It really are those curves that drive us forward, empowering and creating empathy, compassion and resilience as we tackle each one. Like waves on the ocean the learning will keep rolling in. Some of the waves will be easy, rolling gently and slowly onto the shore and some will crash us right from behind and slam us down on our backs. It’s all a learning, a moving forward, through and back and forth again. Whenever you hear that inner critic or that debilitating fear rise up” that tells you “you can’t handle this” try and repeat the mantra “Life is a Learning Curve” ; tattoo it on your arm if you need to and remind yourself you are not supposed to have all the answers and that learning is gives your life meaning your your heart a chance soar.

Its hard for me to take in the fact that next week will be our 10th Annual Winter Solstice Gathering! Ten years of having all of your amazing energies in the yoga room to share this auspicious time of year. This is one of my favorite gatherings and one I truly treasure. It not only celebrates the wonderful return of the sun but also honors the connection we have to each other in this community of like minded people. We come to our mats from all corners of life and various transitional stages. We come to our classes, not only to empower our connection to our selves but, sometimes more importantly, to connect and help empower each other! Just your presence and persistence in showing up inspires and is a true power of example to others, including me. The room if filling up, please rsvp if you plan on coming next week, Thursday, December 21st 7 to 9pm. Click on the link for details. We can either let our thoughts pull us in different directions like wind blows a leaf at will or we can stop and be the still point like a tree, standing firm as the turbulence moves around and through us. We cannot stop the mind, just like we can’t control people, places or things around us, but we can choose to be the calm force amidst the changing winds. Meditation teaches us to “be still and know”, becoming still allows us to see our thoughts with clarity so when we leave our practice we have a better sense of who we are and what is really important to us. These truths lie beneath habitual thought patterns, stilling your body, focusing on your breath is like going underneath the water to discover that an entire new world exists beneath the surface.. A world that lives within you. A world that is calm, focused and knows exactly how to be in this sometimes confusing environment of the mind.

Long Island Yoga Association presents their November Workshop: Mantra, Music and Asana: Tuning into Vibration & Intention with Amy Perri, eRYT500 and friends. Discover how the elements of music, mantra and yoga come together in this uplifting, informative workshop. During this auspicious time that is flowing toward the season of gratitude, we will elevate our vibrations in body, mind and spirit to send out the energy of peace, love and non-violence in a world that so desperately needs each one of us to do so. As a yoga community, we will discover the amazing, energy-shifting power of both a gentle, slow-flow asana class and kirtan serenaded by the rhythms of live music. The day will begin with a dharma talk, followed by an asana class and conclude with a Live Musical Kirtan (A call and response form of group chanting). Amy on Harmonium, Dave DeBenedetto on Guitar and Jim Romeo on Percussion will lead you through original compositions of simple, ancient chants. This workshop is for all levels and no experience necessary.

Good Morning Dearest Yoga Students,
Having spent the weekend with one of my favorite yoga teachers, Rolf Gates, I am filled with a refreshed enthusiasm for my practice and my life. His teachings are rooted in the Yoga Sutras by Patanjali and the Buddha Dharma. Which is both practical experience and loving kindness. By having an Intention, and paying Attention we can come to a deep Understanding that the basic need to be loved, accepted and forgiven is in all of us and that to begin by forgiving ourselves is to open the wide doorway to forgive others. The most basic teachings are sometimes the most profound. I awoke this morning hearing this message:
“The most important things we can do in our life is to not harm ourselves, not harm others and let our actions be rooted in loving kindness.”
