Yoga this Week – January 28, 2018

“Life is a Learning Curve” is the quote my 19 year old snowboarding, drumming, stay-up-all-niter college freshman decided to get tattooed on his inner forearm next to the autism puzzle piece in honor of his older brothers journey navigating life on the spectrum.

Image may contain: one or more people and closeup

These days we have a habit of saying that quote often when we come up against something new, hard, difficult, exciting or confusing. Life IS a learning curve. Do we ever stop learning? Transitions, pain, sorrow, winning, defeat, even success all have a learning curve at their core and what make up a growing life.  After all, wouldn’t the drive just be a tedious ride if all the roads were straight? It really are those curves that drive us forward, empowering and creating empathy, compassion and resilience as we tackle each one.   Like waves on the ocean the learning will keep rolling in. Some of the waves will be easy,  rolling gently and slowly onto the shore and some will crash us right from behind and slam us down on our backs. It’s all a learning, a moving forward, through and back and forth again.   Whenever you hear that inner critic or that debilitating fear rise up” that tells you “you can’t handle this” try and repeat the mantra “Life is a Learning Curve” ; tattoo it on your arm if you need to and remind yourself you are not supposed to have all the answers and that learning is gives your life meaning your your heart a chance soar.

“Falling down doesn’t make you a failure, but staying down does”
Greetings dearest yoga students,
As many times as we get knocked down, it is the getting up that really matters. Remember to be gentle with yourself each time something gets in your way, delays your gratification or literaly takes you down. As you look on at someone elses success, remember that most likely, countless hours of work and failures brought them to the place they are now at. To achieve excellence, you must be willing to continue with faith each time you fail. A failure does not have to be a signal that your work is done but can really mean you are one step closer towards your goal. Be willing to fail, be willing to be vulnerable, be willing to look foolish as you go confidently in the direction of your dreams.

June 11, 2011 Weekly Message

“Why should we be in such desperate haste to succeed, and in such desperate enterprises?  If a man does not keep pace with his companions, perhaps it is because he hears a different drumer.  Let him step to the music which he hears, however measured or far away”
                                      Henry D. Thoreau

Greetngs dearest yoga students,How often do we try to keep pace with our companions?  Pushing forward towards an ideal when we’re not even sure we connect to its truth.  Our society, families, friends all have ideas of how we should live our life.  It is time now to find your own truth.  Listen closely to your heart as you approach a decision.  What truly resonates for you may be quite different from those around you. Do something because you understand why you are doing it deep down in your core and it makes sense for you and those around you.  Give yourself space to feel into the question, check in with your physical, mental and emotional energies, they are the guides to your intuitive nature which always knows what is right.  Take a breath, get yourself in a calm state and have the patience and faith to listen to what your higher self is telling you. Trust yourself enough to be guided from within, not because you feel you need to adhere to some arbitrary code that others have laid out for you.  We live and let live which means we also honor that others have their own path, we niether judge or retaliate; we honor their decision and go our own way to decide for ourselves.

You cannot discover new oceans until you have the courage to lose sight of the shore.

Anon

Most importatnly,  don’t be afraid to fail.  It is in taking risks, trying out new ways of being that we find ourselves and create the life we were meant to live.  Nothing would get done if we all waited untill we did it perfectly.  Encourage yourself with compassion, focus, vision and a little light hearted humor.   It is in the falls we take that we learn how to endure, create and make this world a better place for ourselves and others.
