“Yoga does not just change the way we see things it transforms the person who sees”

BKS Iyengar

Hari Om Dear Friends,

Look around you. Really take your time and look around. Be thankful for the little things that make up your daily round. Acknowledge the blessings in having the comfort of a home where you feel sheltered and protected. Walk around your space; whether it be in your yard, around your house or your apartment. Consciously take in all the blessings that surround you. Yoga not only transforms how we see things but transforms the person who sees. What do you see around you today?

Yoga Sutra 1:2 – Chitta Vritti Nirodha

Yoga is to quiet the mind long enough so we can become present to the experience that is in the here and now. Pema Chodron put it beautifully in speaking about meditation. “You are [essentially] training in interrupting the of the wandering mind and going right to the experience itself” When we “train” our minds to come back from wandering (into the future, past, fantasy or fear), the reality of our lives becomes clear and we are able to receive the moment in all its complexity and wholeness.

“Real isn’t how you are made,” said the Skin Horse. “It’s a thing that happens to you. ….”Does it hurt?” asked the Rabbit. “Sometimes,” said the Skin Horse, for he was always truthful. “When you are Real you don’t mind being hurt.” “Does it happen all at once, like being wound up,” he asked,   “It doesn’t happen all at once,” said the Skin Horse. “You become. It takes a long time…..Generally, by the time you are Real, most of your hair has been loved off, and your eyes drop out and you get loose in your joints and very shabby. But these things don’t matter at all, because once you are Real you can’t be ugly, except to people who don’t understand.” (from The Velveteen Rabbit

Greetings Dear yoga students,

Becoming “real” and “living in your truth” is not painless or pretty, but a necessary step towards wholeness and healing.  It takes courage, stamina and faith to arise each day, stand in your truth and face your life in all of its reality;  turning away from nothing that you see.   This process of becoming real involves the art of clear seeing, compassion and a willingness to be used for a higher purpose. In becoming real, you can’t become ugly, you ultimately become the beautiful, spiritual, loving being you always were meant to be

Inspiring Yoga Quotes for Your Practice

Yoga helps to ground us into ourselves so that whatever it is that is happening outside of us, (which we cannot control) has limited ability to throw us off balance. We come back to our inner stability, literally stand on our own two feet, feeling the spine become long, our gaze fixed straight ahead and our hearts expand with compassion, clarity and love.

The Yoga of Service • Ram Dass

*Scroll Down for Schedule Changes*

Greetings dearest yoga students and friends,

A deep bow of gratitude for all who contributed to our fundraising efforts on Autumn Equinox. It was such an uplifing evening. I certainly felt freer, higher, clearer, lighter and more energized (as Ram Dass put it in the quote above) and grateful for being able to bring together such a beautiful community of souls to sing, move and honor the turning of the seasons.

Speaking of Equinox….I booked Camp DeWolfe in Wading River for a Spring Equinox Day Retreat! Save the date of March 22, 2022. I know Spring is a whole half year away but I’ve been wanting to lead a retreat ever since our Goddess Getaway was thwarted by “that which we shall not name” in 2020! Let me know if you would like to put your name on the preliminary list. More details to follow!

detachment

“Detachment is simply letting go of all you hold fast to in your mind. It doesn’t actually mean losing anything, simply changing your relationship with the things in your life today. The greatest pleasure for every soul comes as a result of choosing detachment. Why? Because attachment is a form of slavery that takes place in our own minds. And the result of detachment? Real freedom”

warr iii let go
Raga:  The Klesha of Attachment

Raga is translated at attachment and attachment causes suffering when we try to hang on to things that are impermanent or chase after a a certain experience that caused us pleasure.  Like all the kleshas, or afflictions, at their core lies confusion of what is permanent and impermanent, real and unreal and largely based in fear.  Unhealthy attachment is born of fear of not getting what we want, fear of losing what we have, fear of letting go.

The opposite of fear is faith.  So to release the grip of Raga we need to have faith and a deep understanding that the the comings and goings of all we love and find comfort in are a natural part of the cycle of life; letting go allows you to access the peace of mind you seek.  When we make decisions from a truly detached place; from a place of calm abiding, wisdom and love, we set the inner spirit free to move us toward all that is good, true, and right in our lives.   Letting go of attachments to how things should be, of what we need to be whole, happy human beings,  allow our lives to be a  journey of wonder, gratitude and contentment.

Do not try to save the whole world or do anything grandiose.
Instead, create a clearingin the dense forest
of your life and wait there patiently, until the song
that is your life falls into your own cupped hands
and you recognize and greet it.
Only then will you know how to give yourself
to this world so worthy of rescue.

yOGA THIS WEEK – JUNE 20, 2021 – NEW START TIME FOR TUES & FRI MORNINGS!

*PLEASE NOTE:  TUESDAY & FRIDAY MORNINGS ARE BEINGING AT 9AM FOR THE SUMMER MONTHS*

Greetings dear yoga students,

“She began to realize that identifying her practice with things that could be lost [advanced postures or deep states of meditation],  would always leave her susceptible to fear anything that could be taken away through sickness, aging or life circumstances, was not a very wise thing to stand on.  It  was then that she realized the only security lay in using her yoga practice to tether her awareness to the part of herself that was and is eternal. ”  Donna Farhi

Avidya is the core klesha from which all the others arise.

Avidya – Spiritual Ignorance

Asmita – Ego – Persona -False Self

Raga – Attachment to Pleasure

Dvesa – Aversion to Pain

Adhinivhesa – Fear of Death/Loss

These Kleshas or misperceptions are basically the core confusion of what is permanent with what is impermanent and the suffering we cause ourselves when we try to hold on to these impermanent things.  We all have fear of losing things we hold dear.  It may be loved ones, our jobs, our health, our strength, our physical appearance or the myriad of ego driven personas we believe ourselves to be.  The yoga sutras tell us that if we are aware of these Kleshas at the root, and Do not allow them to take hold in our psyches, we can release their power. Finding rest within the eternal part of ourselves illuminates the truth that  uncertainty is a core part of our existence. This understanding  is the key that gives us the courage to see through false promises and lack of control so we can ultimately  let go to live with freedom, peace and joy!

Yoga this Week & USB Interview – March 4, 2018

Greetings dearest yoga students,

Yoga teaches us to enjoy and trust the process; to have the right intention and alignment and let go of the results.  If we can simply learn to trust and have faith in our own capacity for our highest selves to show up, we may find true, uncontrived freedom of expression as well as the ability to be courageous in difficult moments.  What is your vision today, can you hold that in your heart and mind and trust the process?

I had such a wonderful time joining Captain Phil at 90.1 USB Radio Station on Friday night.  If you would like to give a listen to my interview, click on one of the links below.  I come on at about 28 minutes in.  The interview ends with one of my favorite songs by a wonderful local musician, Rory Kelly, it’s called “If You Teach a Bird to Sing”  Hope you enjoy it!

Yoga this Week – January 28, 2018

“Life is a Learning Curve” is the quote my 19 year old snowboarding, drumming, stay-up-all-niter college freshman decided to get tattooed on his inner forearm next to the autism puzzle piece in honor of his older brothers journey navigating life on the spectrum.

Image may contain: one or more people and closeup

These days we have a habit of saying that quote often when we come up against something new, hard, difficult, exciting or confusing. Life IS a learning curve. Do we ever stop learning? Transitions, pain, sorrow, winning, defeat, even success all have a learning curve at their core and what make up a growing life.  After all, wouldn’t the drive just be a tedious ride if all the roads were straight? It really are those curves that drive us forward, empowering and creating empathy, compassion and resilience as we tackle each one.   Like waves on the ocean the learning will keep rolling in. Some of the waves will be easy,  rolling gently and slowly onto the shore and some will crash us right from behind and slam us down on our backs. It’s all a learning, a moving forward, through and back and forth again.   Whenever you hear that inner critic or that debilitating fear rise up” that tells you “you can’t handle this” try and repeat the mantra “Life is a Learning Curve” ; tattoo it on your arm if you need to and remind yourself you are not supposed to have all the answers and that learning is gives your life meaning your your heart a chance soar.
