Yoga this Week – January 6, 2019

Happy New Year dear Yoga Students,

We had a wonderful time at the Kirtan last Friday night and I was amazed how free and happy I felt the next day!  The energy has stayed with me all weekend.  I was particularly taken with the moment we chanted to “our struggles” during Hari Om Tat Sat which translates as we bow to the truth of all that is sacred.  Our struggles are part of our sacred path.  Just like moving into the darkness from Autumn Equinox to Winter Solstice, it is part of the sacred cycle of our lives to move in and out and forward and back again.  Hopefully we learn to grow,  to leave behind what doesn’t serve us, take with us the lessons and honor the journey.  Here we are, beautiful yogi’s, at the start of a brand new year.  May you all and all beings find peace within your darkness and may we all honor the ever increasing light together as we travel this life together.

“My beloved child, break your heart no longer.
Each time you judge yourself, you break your own heart.
You stop feeding on the love which is the wellspring of your vitality.
The time has come.

Your time.  To celebrate.

And to see the goodness that you are.
You my child, are divine. You are pure. You are sublimely free.
You are God in disguise. And you are always perfectly safe.
Do not fight the dark. Just turn on the light.
Let go, And breathe into the goodness that you are.”

Hari Om Dearest Yoga Students,

May Peace, Contentment and Joy fill your heart and soul this entire week and beyond!  Thank you sooo much for being part of our wonderful yoga community.  The Winter Solstice Sangha was so  much fun and the connection I see between you all fills me with such happiness.  After all, what truly is the most important thing in our lives?  From my vantage point it is how we touch the lives around us.  Much gratitude to you for touching my heart so deeply and with such fun, dedication and love.

Mantra, Music and Asana: Tuning into Vibration & Intention this Saturday November 12, 1-4pm

Long Island Yoga Association presents their November Workshop: Mantra, Music and Asana: Tuning into Vibration & Intention with Amy Perri, eRYT500 and friends. Discover how the elements of music, mantra and yoga come together in this uplifting, informative workshop. During this auspicious time that is flowing toward the season of gratitude, we will elevate our vibrations in body, mind and spirit to send out the energy of peace, love and non-violence in a world that so desperately needs each one of us to do so. As a yoga community, we will discover the amazing, energy-shifting power of both a gentle, slow-flow asana class and kirtan serenaded by the rhythms of live music. The day will begin with a dharma talk, followed by an asana class and conclude with a Live Musical Kirtan (A call and response form of group chanting). Amy on Harmonium, Dave DeBenedetto on Guitar and Jim Romeo on Percussion will lead you through original compositions of simple, ancient chants. This workshop is for all levels and no experience necessary.

Good Morning Dearest Yoga Students,

Having spent the weekend with one of my favorite yoga teachers, Rolf Gates, I am filled with a refreshed enthusiasm for my practice and my life.  His teachings are rooted in the Yoga Sutras by Patanjali and the Buddha Dharma. Which is both practical experience and loving kindness.   By having an Intention, and paying Attention we can come to a deep Understanding that the basic need to be loved, accepted and forgiven is in all of us and that to begin by forgiving ourselves is to open the wide doorway to forgive others.     The most basic teachings are sometimes the most profound.  I awoke this morning hearing this message:

“The most important things we can do in our life is to not harm ourselves, not harm others and let our actions be rooted in loving kindness.”

At the end of the day, at the end of our lives, aren’t these truly the only things that matter?

Yoga this Week – February 15, 2016

“Shall I tell you what I find beautiful about you?  You are at your very best when things are worst”  Starman

download (1)

Utkatasana (chair pose)  exemplifies the amazing ability of the human spirit to rise up and find the strength, grace and power we didn’t even know we had.  We have all had experiences  where   the bottom seems to fall out from underneath our life; a devastating phone call comes or some unexpected turn of events sends life into a tailspin.   It is at precisely these times, when help seems to come out of nowhere; people organize themselves to help, families let go of their differences to work together for the common goal, friends come from all directions.  It is at our worst,  that we become our very best.

If you have a moment today, take chair pose for a few breaths.  Breathe into the grounding at your feet, feel how your heart lifts and your hands reach up toward the sky.  Embodying this powerful pose allows us to experience our own power and also the source of power around us that enables us to lift ourselves  up and bask in the light and love that is always there.  Thich Nhat Hahn says “No Mud, No Lotus” which means that we must go through the dark, the struggles, the sticky stuff to reveal our true beauty.   In the depths of the winter, dig deep and reach high.  Spring is surely on its way and  we await its coming with joy, strength and resolve.

Accept the things to which fate binds you, and love the people with whom fate brings you together, but do so with all your heart. ~
Marcus Aelius Aurelius

Greetings dear yoga students,

Hoping this email finds you fostering a sense of grateful anticipation for the day and week ahead. Acceptance of life circumstances does not mean to give in, give up or throw in the towel. Acceptance is looking at what fate has brought to your door, examining the facts with an open heart and clear mind and then from deep within gather the courage to do what you need or do – which in some instances is the courage to do absolutely nothing. Whenever we are at odds with something, feel “off-kilter” or are experiencing anxiety, it usually can be traced back to our inability to accept what is happening in the present moment. Acceptance enables us to enjoy the scenery of our lives the way it is, even if it is not what we expected. So dive in to the present moment of your life today and meditate on the areas that you meet with resistance; breathe a compassionate breath, bless your circumstances, love the people who join you on your journey with all your heart and find the peace and serenity that comes with true acceptance.

Greetings dear Yoga Students,

When you do your yoga practice,  do it for more than the obvious physical benefits.  Yoga gives us an opportunity to connect with that sacred self that lies beneath appearances, beyond belief systems and transcends even time.  Yoga ignites our curiosity and expands our capacity for growth to help create a more meaningful, healthy and vital sense of living, not just for ourselves, but for all we come in contact with.
