Yoga this Week – May 22, 2017

“Crying is one of the highest devotional songs. One who knows crying, knows spiritual practice. If you can cry with a pure heart, nothing else compares to such a prayer. Crying includes all the principles of Yoga.”
Kripalvanandji

Dearest Yoga Students,

Hope you enjoy a good cry now and again.  I have always been a crier.  The tears just come and there is no holding them back.  Not much has changed.  I cry when I am happy, upset, mad, frustrated, full of love or simply when I become overwhelmed by the beauty and fragility of this life.  Crying integrates a sense of presence like nothing else, it includes breath work, abdominal strengthening and has the ability to allow my emotions to flow like the tears the streaming down my face leaving me calm and relieved.  I used to feel bad about the way I cried.  Those around me would urge me to stop and stifle it,  maybe due to  their own uncomfortability.  Today, I have embraced my ability to wear my emotional body out for the world to see.  If I am in a situation where it is absolutely inappropriate to cry, I take a breath and promise myself a good cry the next chance I get.  So allow yourself to cry.  Cry for the world, cry for yourself, cry for all the amazing ups and downs, and cry for the deep, spiritual love you feel when you witness the sacred beauty all around you.

Yoga this Week – April 6, 2013

Only as a spiritual warrior can one withstand the path of knowledge. A warrior cannot complain or regret anything. His life is an endless challenge and challenges cannot possibly be good or bad. Challenges are simply challenges. The basic difference between an ordinary man and a warrior is that a warrior takes everything as a challenge, while an ordinary man takes everything
as a blessing or a curse.                                             – Don Juan
Greetings to all my peaceful warriors who week after week face the ultimate challenge of coming face to face with their bodies, minds and spirits on their yoga mats.  Breathe in the energy of spring and be present to all the love that surrounds you.

“You are seeking joy in far off places, but the spring of joy is in your heart.  The haven of peace is in yourself”

Thank you all for journeying  through the chakra system these past seven weeks with me.  As always, it is an honor and a pleasure to be able to bring these sacred teachings to you.   Our study of the body, mind and spirit with its complex movement of energy never ends.  Through asana, meditation, chanting, and spiritual studies, we learn how to be grounded, creative, powerful, compassionate, expressive and wise so we can connect to spirit and the grace thats available to us in our lives.   I stand in awe at our  body’s capacity for healing and guiding us back to wholeness; to our orginal state of equanimity, love and peace because I both know this to be true and I see it in all of you week after week as you committ to your practice and yourself.

Yoga this Week – January 27, 2013

The winds of grace are blowing all the time. You have only to raise your sail. –Sri Ramakrishna

Anja Chakra located in between the eyebrows often referred to as the Third Eye. When this chakra opens it is like a gateway allowing divine wisdom to enter our minds. Like the wind it is always there waiting, all you have to do is allow it to flow.
The symbol of OM in the center of the chakra represents the unleased energy of the Kundulini Snake rising upward. The crescent moon of feminine receptivity embraces the circle above it. This circle is a golden dot which is the essence of spiritual energy. It represents being in your center. When we chant the mantra “OM” we are embracing all of this universal divine energy, OM brings the ego self into union with the spirit self.
When the the ego realizes that the fulfillment of its highest dreams is only to be found through merging with the Higher Self, the false masks the ego has created fall away and who you thought you were or who you thought you ought to be lose their grip. Suddenly you let go and your true self shines forth.  So Hum,  ” I am what I am” There is no guilt, no need for illusion or pretense. You are totally in the present and you realize that  the you you have been seeking has been  there all along.

Yoga this Week – November 25, 2012

If I can stop one heart from breaking, I shall not live in vain. If I can ease one life the aching, or cool one pain, or help one fainting robin unto his nest again I shall not live in vain. ~ Emily Dickinson

The message in the above quote is powerful and simple; Emerge from your own suffering and be of service in any small way and your life will have meaning and your heart will be full.  Never doubt what small acts of kindness can accomplish.  As long as we are guided by love and desire for service, let us never doubt ourselves and the path that we forge in our lives.
Kishori, our guest student and teacher, who after leaving India immersed in the yogic culture and found her way to our humble yoga room,  will be continuing on in her travels.  I thank her for inspiring us with her inner and outer beauty and knowledge.  She has expressed great gratitude to have found our precious yoga community and a space that encourages peace, empowerment, healing and sangha within the secular world we live in.   May we continue to encourage and support each other on this path.
Try not to skimp on your practice  as the darkness begins to envelope our days and the busy days of December come upon us.  Optimum health is the key to a happy and joyous season.

Yoga this Week August 21, 2011

Greetings dearest yoga students,

Hope you are enjoying this summer day and this email finds you well.

“To have a sacred place…is an absolute necessity for anybody today.  You must have a room (or corner of a room) …, where you can simply bring forth what you are and what you might be.  This is a place of creative incubation.  At first you may find that nothing happens there, but if you have a sacred place and use it, something (wonderful) eventually will happen”
                                          Joseph Campbell

Let’s face it, we could all use a week long retreat away from all of our demands and responsibilities but that is not always possible.  You can, however, learn to create that sacred space and retreat to it whenever you feel inclined.  Also carving out a certain amount of time at a specific time of day will give you the structure and discipline to find that quiet, alone time we all crave.  Whether it be 10 minutes sitting in quiet contemplation or an hour of gentle stretching, try creating a space of your own somewhere in your home.  Even if it is just a corner where you place a candle, journal or some other meaningful reminders.  Once you take the time to make this simple sacred space, you will soon wonder how you ever did without it.
