“Mother Ganges teaches us that if we want to attain the sea of our aspiration, we must persevere in our goal and never be discouraged by the inevitable obstacles that come on our path. All impediments are like rocks in the river of life. We should flow around them and never give up. With the Lord’s help, there is always a way.”

Excerpt from “The Journey Home” by Radhanath Swami

Dearest Yoga Students,

One of my favorite teachers, Rolf Gates used to say, “The obstacles in our path, are our path”, and I believe this to be true.  Yoga is about relationship and connection. Today explore your relationship to the rocks in the river of your life.  How you think about your obstacles  and the energy you bring to your actions as you relate to them, has everything to do how you “flow around them”.  Today as my husband and I literally got lost in the trails in the woods, we reminded each other (in between glares of confusion) to enjoy the journey of being lost.  As the sound of the road became louder and we knew we were almost back, I contemplated the fact that we are never really lost, we are never really off the path and that the detours, obstacles and the “not knowing” are usually the most beautiful parts of our journey.  So persevere today and avoid becoming discouraged.  With the help of the divine source that is vibrating all around us, there is always a way.

Iyengar on yoga

 Greetings dearest yoga students,

I have gained so much from B.K.S. Iyengar’s teachings over the course of my yoga studies that my gratitude overflows for his wisdom, may he rest in peace!!  The study of yoga is a lifetime pursuit that never ends but continually grows deeper.  The teachings of yoga  stimulate my intellect and ignite my creativity as well as allowing me to persevere in  “maintaining a balanced attitude and abiding in”skillful action” the duties I must perform in my life.  I am doubly blessed to have found this amazing path and to have the honor of passing it on to all of you!

Yoga this Week – November 24, 2013

At times our own light goes out and is rekindled by a spark from another person.
Each of us has cause to think with deep gratitude of those who have lighted the flame within us.  ~ Albert Schweitzer

Dear Yoga Students,

Much gratitude now and always to all of you who show up week after week to your yoga mat.  Whether you realize it or not, your presence in class not only lights your own flame but also supports others that practice beside you on their path.  Sometimes all we need is a spark to rekindle our flame; a smile, a kind work, a new idea, a sweet heartfelt hug.  Never underestimate the power a small gesture can create.  May you and yours enjoy the small moments, those precious times together when we express our gratitude for each other and all we have in our lives.

“Without intention, all these postures, these breathing practices, meditations, and the like can become little more than ineffectual gestures. When animated by intention, however, the simplest movement, the briefest meditation, and the contents of one breath cycle are made potent.”

                                                                      Donna Farhi

Good Morning Dearest Yoga Students,

It feels wonderful to be wide awake on this glorious November morning.    Setting an intention can be extremely powerful, not only for your yoga practice but for your day, your week or your life.  With an intention set, our mind seems to calm down and we can rest in the fact that we know we are doing the right thing; that we are on course.

Whatever you are doing today, after reading this, stop for a moment or two and see if an intention for this day comes up for you.  It could be an intention to remain calm if difficulties are awaiting you.  It could be an intention to release judgement or cultivate joy inside yourself.  Whatever you wish for yourself, try setting an intention to cultivate that quality inside.  If you want to be happier, intend to be happy.  If you want more friends, intend to be friendly.  If you want more serenity, intend to act serene.  It may sound to simplistic, but it actually is.  With the full moon energy tonight,  you may want to go a step further and write your intention down to make it more concrete, the written word has much power.  As you move into your next task for the day after you read this whether you are going to do laundry, rake leaves, make breakfast for your family;  do it with an intention in your mind and notice what arises.  Live your life by design….try repeating the following mantra to keep you on your way:

“I am flowing down the river of my life, steering myself in the right direction”

Yoga this Week – Some temporary changes – Please read!

**MORNING YOGA WILL BE HELD AT AN ALTERNATE LOCATION FOR THE NEXT TWO WEEKS **  CONTACT ME DIRECTLY FOR DETAILS…**.NO MONDAY EVENING OR FRIDAY MORNING CLASSES THIS WEEK**

Greetings dearest Yoga Students

Hope this email finds you well.  As you all must know by now, chanting is one of the most enjoyable parts of my practice.  It engages all parts of the self; body, mind and spirit.  Chanting and singing with ShaktiPath a good part of this weekend has left me today with a resonance of peace, joy and unexpected energy. It was such a pleasure to see familiar as well as new faces connecting to the power of music and chant.   Much gratitude for your support.  Many more chances in the near future to join in.

Tuning into vibrational energy has a meditative quality that connects you to others and yourself on a very deep level; a level that must be experienced to understand. Our physical yoga practice has this amazing quality as well.  As we move through the confines of our bodies on an energetic level we go into a deeper level of ourselves; we begin to experience the boundless, eternal light vibration that we are.  Be present to this vibrational energy as you walk through your days.  Feel it in your voice, in the wind, in another’s eyes and connect with compassion to all the beauty that is available to you in the small and not so obvious places.

Yoga this Week - February 12, 2012

Greetings dear yoga students,

Hope this evening finds you honoring your inner light, even though the darkness abounds all around us.  Honor the seasons, the coming and going of light and be present.    Have the awareness to savor the sights, sounds, and aromas of each passing day as we move towards the darkest day of the year.

A dear friend of mine is taking up her yearly collection of coats for the needy which will be distributed in New York City the week before Thanksgiving.  I am asking for donations of winter coats of any kind but in particular, MENS COATS, to be brought in prior to Thanksgiving week.  If you have any old coats in your closets that aren’t being used, please consider bringing them to class and I will deliver to my fiend, Mary.  “Alone we can do some, but together we can do so much”.

Yoga this Week – October 19, 2013

The intuitive mind is a sacred gift and the rational mind is a faithful servant. We have created a society that honors the servant and has forgotten the gift.

                                             — Albert Einstein

Hari Om dearest yoga students,

Hoping this beautiful fall morning finds you in some form of gratitude for this gift of today.  The way of the yogi warrior is the way of the heart.  The intuitive mind is led by the heart.  Our yoga practice awakens a deeper awareness of our minds, bodies and spirits and it is in this awakening that we can begin to “feel” into our lives instead of “thinking” through our lives.  Although intellectual ability is often the first to be consulted to solve problems, create plans, or learn new abilities, it is truly the intuitive mind that will always lead you down the sacred path of the heart.

Inside your heart are the yamas and niyamas.

The Five Yamas

Ahimsa : nonviolence   Satya: truthfulness   Asteya: nonstealing   Brahmacharya: temperance   Aparigraha: noncovetousness

The Five Niyamas

Saucha: cleanliness  Santosha: contentment  Tapas: heat; austerities Svadhyaya: study of the sacred scriptures and of one’s self  Isvara pranidhana: surrender to God

To find the way, close your eyes, listen closely and find that light within you, that energy moving, that feeling tone that points the way.   We are naturally pure, go deeper, your intrinsic goodness will move you towards the most ethical, loving way. Without studying a single yoga sutra, we know inside ourselves the path.  Honor this gift, the sacred intuitive mind and allow your intellect to serve.  For this day, allow the words of Ghandi to resonate on a deep level;

“The Culture of the mind must be subservient to the heart”

Yoga this Week – October 13, 2013

The Goddess Sarasvati

Sara:  The one who gives the essence & Sva: of  our true Self

The Goddess Sarasvati is worshipped for her creativity, wisdom, purity and gentleness.   She is said to bestow eloquence, intelligence and artistic inspiration to all who meditate on her transcendental qualities.   Her calming peaceful presence reminds us of the great power of Shakti (the feminine energy that is said to be the catalyst of change and creation with love as the driving force) and the ultimate divine mother.  As this last day of Navrarti (the nine day festival celebrating the divine mother in all her forms) comes to a close, we honor Goddess Sarasvati  and call upon her to connect us to the essence of our own true, divine nature where all of these beautiful qualities have always, and will always exist.

“May the great river of Sarasvati overflow and grant us her grace”
