“We are far now from home and weary from our travels. The sun is setting and there is no destination in sight. Yoga is a lamp lit in the window of our home, dimly glimpsed across the spiritual wilderness in which we wander. At a time when we could not feel further from our home, yoga reminds us that we are already there, that we need simply awaken from our dream of separation, our dream of imperfection.”
Rolf Gates-Meditations from the Mat

Greetings dearest yoga students,
Yoga brings us home. In the quiet spaces in between the movement of breath, of postures, of thought, what remains is perfect peace. We must let go of the illusion that we are not enough, that our lives need to look a certain way, that our bodies should not age, that we are separate from each other and simply dive in to the present moment where we are welcomed with pure acceptance.
In dealing with a particularly challenging issue this past week, the outpouring and support from those around me was astonishing. I went from feeling hopeless to complete gratitude as I experienced a profound realization that I am being carried by a grace that is beyond my comprehension. The most important thing was that I stopped carrying all the weight and reached out. I simply fell into the arms of those around me and magically solutions popped up, people came to my aide and my situation was solved.

Know that you too are being carried by this same grace, there is a community of loving others that will be there to catch you when you fall and carry you if need be. Practice your yoga as a way to see through this “spiritual wilderness” to the next face that may need you to carry them. Our journey in this life is simply to to remember what we have always known: We are one, we are already home and we possess all we need to be happy, joyous and free

"To laugh often and much; To win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children; To earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends; To appreciate beauty; To find the best in others; To leave the world a bit better, whether by healthy child, a garden patch, or a redeemed social condition; To know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived."

Hoping this email finds you appreciating the amazing energy of spring. As the world around us displays its enduring beauty, so we must come to realize we are part of all of creation unfolding. Our interactions with each other, the world and ourselves have a tremendous impact whether we see the effects or not. Shopping at our local supermarket yesterday, I was filled with such a sense of community and love as row by row, I was greeted by neihbors, students, and friends; hugs and greetings of concern and well wishes abounded in our interactions (it took me twice as long to shop, but it was worth it).
Keep your life simple, realize that it is in the small everyday acts of kindness that make a life meaningful, joyous and productive. Go where your heart leads you, be quick to laugh and eager to give. We don’t have to accomplish grandiose acts of valor in order to “help one life breathe easier”. Mother Theresa said to “do small things with great love”. Take pride in your small acts of kindness today and live this day well!!!

Hari Om Dearest Yoga Students,
Hoping this message finds you enjoying the first signs of spring that are popping up all around us. Think about the perseverance and patience that nature is gifted with. The small bulbs that wait silently underground, the perennials that lay dormant waiting for the signals and signs that it is time to begin their work of opening, pushing, growing up out of the dark earth into the light. Nature does not give up, it finds a way to regenerate. The natural world knows what needs to be done and does not question its role in its lifetime. As I look out my window and marvel at the pink and purple hyacinths that bloom in my garden, it fills me with hope and joy that we too can rise above our darkness and shine in all our glory
We all know the saying that nothing comes easy. It is not so much talent, genius, education or luck that enables great people to do great things. It is simply the persistence and perseverance of doing the next right thing, showing up when they don’t really want to, knocking at the door long enough until someone answers. We too must learn the lesson of patience and persistence as we confront situations in our lives where we are either forced to wait or forced to gather all our faith to keep hanging on day in and day out, dangling on the edge of vulnerability.
My young son learned a great lesson yesterday as he walked through his fear to re-take a test qualifying him to be an umpire that he had failed last week. He had decided that he was not going to take the chance of “being completely humilitated” if he failed a second time laying face down on his bed. At the last moment to our surprise he popped up, got dressed and asked my husband to take him. He came home shining with pride as he ended up passing the test! The act of suiting up and showing up even when the obstacles arise in our path, builds confidence, faith, character and joy.
The Yoga Sutras tell us is it the obstacles that lead us into a deeper understanding of ourselves which in turn allows to become deeply connected to others as well as the divine force that flows in and out of everything. Directly confronting our difficulties with clarity, compassion and persistence creates freedom. Freedom in knowing you are never really trapped in any situation. For today, see if you can change your perspective to any “rocks” that are in your stream. Stay focused, do the next right thing, however small it may seem, and try and find the lesson, the jewel that is hidden within. Today, be persistent in your journey towards balance, freedom, peace and serenity in your life.

– Helen Keller
On a recent walk with a dear friend we were discussing finding our life’s path. How do we find inspiration, purpose, love of life and fulfillment? And even if we find the things that make us most happy, how do we follow through with our dharma and actually live it? We talked about how I have found my path teaching yoga which fulfills so much of what I believe to be my dharma of service and devotion. She quickly reminded me, however, that I “was a wreck” each time I was making another decision to pursue this dream, but I stumbled forward in spite of myself. When we make the decision to ride through the fear and doubt, the right people, situations and opportunities seem to just magically show up. The universe supports us when we trust that still, small voice that whispers to us in moments of revelation.
You will never allow yourself to move forward and make life an adventure if you aren’t sometimes a “wreck” about the decision. You will never be daring, spontaneous or free if you don’t experience doubt and fear. The important thing is that you walk forward anyway. Even when you don’t know what the outcome will be, you walk through the fear head on and move forward trusing that the universe is putting opportunities in your path everyday if you are open to them. Mark Twain said, “Courage is not the absence of fear. It is acting in spite of it” To “avoid danger is no safer in the long run” so try and let go a little each day of your safe place on the shore and make life an exciting adventure, flowing in and with your life and then sit back and enjoy the ride.

“Avoid greed in your life and you will vibrate harmoniously with this attribute of Aparigraha. Treat others with respect and be generous with your time and attention. Remember, if you want love, freely give love away”

Remove yourself from the center of the universe. Release self seeking and look for ways in which you can give to those around you. Hold your attention on perfecting the intention for what you do and not on the end result. Try to detach from what you will gain, in your work, play, service, obligations, relationships, creative endeavors; Immerse yourself in the task and leave the outcome to the divine powers to do with what it sees fit. When we detach from the outcome and simply do what we do to the best of our ability and with pure intentions, we are allowing what we have to flow freely unencumbered by selfish desires.

Aparigraha is learning to let go and release our grip (without claw marks) when we are hoarding or attaching to someone or something out of fear. It’s learning to be patient with empty spaces without the need to fill them. It teaches us to simply be satisfied. It frees us from our false ego self that tells us impermanent, transient comfort, validation and perceived control are things that will make us happy. Aparigraha means developing a strong confidence and devotion not to this world but to the Higher intelligence that permeates and interconnects our lives when we choose to act from a place of selflessness, generosity and love.

Happy Valentines Day!
