So Much Happiness

It is difficult to know what to do with so much happiness.
With sadness there is something to rub against,
A wound to tend with lotion and cloth.
When the world falls in around you, you have pieces to pick up,
Something to hold in your hands, like ticket stubs or change.

But happiness floats.
It doesn’t need you to hold it down.
It doesn’t need anything.
Happiness lands on the roof of the next house, singing,
And disappears when it wants to.
You are happy either way.
Even the fact that you once lived in a peaceful tree house
And now live over a quarry of noise and dust
Cannot make you unhappy.
Everything has a life of its own,
It too could wake up filled with possibilities
Of coffee cake and ripe peaches,
And love even the floor which needs to be swept,
The soiled linens and scratched records….

Since there is no place large enough
To contain so much happiness,
You shrug, you raise your hands, and it flows out of you
Into everything you touch. You are not responsible.
You take no credit, as the night sky takes no credit
For the moon, but continues to hold it, and to share it,
And in that way, be known.

~ Naomi Shihab Nye ~

One of yoga’s most beautiful niyamas (ethical practices to cultivate) is Santosha or Contentment.    With Santosha, there is less doing and more a sitting with, a being present for, a quiet contemplation to look around and be content in the moment, in this very moment.  Today notice how many times you might sabotage your contentment.  Sometimes we worry that things are too good, that it won’t last.  Sometimes we think we should do more, be more or get more.   Be aware of when you feel content today  and allow yourself the joy and peace that cultivating santosha brings, however fleeting or far between,

Aparigraha
greedlessness, non-attachment

The yogi feels that the collection or hoarding of things implies a lack of faith in God and in himself to provide for the future….By the observance of aparigraha, the yogi makes his life as simple as possible and trains his mind not to feel the loss or the lack of anything. Then everything he really needs will come to him by itself at the proper time.”

Hari Om Dear Yoga Students,

As this Fall draws us inward I wish for your eyes to see all the abundance that you already possess right now in this moment in this time in your life. One beautiful morning this past week I walked down to the shore, a little less than a mile from my house and  was embraced by the serene beauty  all around me. It caused me to stop and I experienced a moment that seemed to have transformed into one of those magical moments suspended in time. I paused, connected to my breath, did some simple yoga postures and sat on a piece of wood to silently sit in meditation.. As the rhythmic sound of the waves made their way into my mind and the gentle warm breeze caressed my skin, I felt so completely connected to all that was around me. The feeling of abundance and gratitude seemed to encapsulate my entire being. If we take even a moment to connect with all that is precious and dear to us in our lives right now, we allow the divine light to shine into our hearts. A moment like this can change your entire day from one that is ordinary to one that is full of miracles and we seem to lack nothing.

The Perfect Cup

Its time to see the flaws of myself and stop being alarmed
It’s time for me to halt my drive for perfection and to accept my blemishes

It’s time for me to receive slowly evolving growth;
the kind that comes in God’s own good time
and does not heed to my panicky pushing.

It’s time for me to embrace my humaness and love my incompleteness.
It’s time for me to cherish the unwanted,
to welcome the unknown,
to treasure the unfulfilled

If I wait untill I am perfect,
I will always be unsatified and ungrateful

If I wait until all the flaws,
chips and cracks disappear
I will be the cup that sits on the shelf and is never used
Greetings dearest yoga students,
Hope this email finds you embracing this day with all its so called “imperfections”.  The sooner we move into acceptance and embrace who we are in the moment and how our life is in the present, the sooner we will allow peace to flow within us. Think of the beauty of a tree, a landscape, an old picture or a favorite pair of worn out jeans; it is the imperfections that make them beautiful, interesting and alive.  By embracing our humaness we also acknowledge our divinity.  It is through this human experience that we come to know the sacred in life.   Do not wait, cease this day and open up to the ways in which you can be used to better the lives of those around you in any small way.  When you learn to love the imperfections in yourself, you unconciously give others the permission to accept and love themselves just as they are.  In your imperfections you are incredibly perfect and exactly who you are meant to be!

detachment

“Detachment is simply letting go of all you hold fast to in your mind. It doesn’t actually mean losing anything, simply changing your relationship with the things in your life today. The greatest pleasure for every soul comes as a result of choosing detachment. Why? Because attachment is a form of slavery that takes place in our own minds. And the result of detachment? Real freedom”

The art of detachment is the practice of showing up, doing your best and letting go of the results acknowledging the basic truth that everything in life has its perfect moment.  It is the realization that if we do not get what we want (even if it seems like the perfect job, perfect person, perfect place, perfect opportunity, etc.)  that there is probably a better time for that situation to materialize in our lives or more often than not, it may be something that is never supposed to happen at all.  When we truly are able to detach from the outcome we release the dissapointment, anger or inadaquacy we feel when things don’t turn out as we thought they should.  Thinking we will find our happiness in someone or something outside ourselves is only an atempt to gratify our senses and satisfy the ego which can never truly be satified.  Acting from a place of attachment and clinging is acting from fear.
The opposite of fear is faith.  So in contrast, the art of letting go actually allows you to access the peace of mind you seek.   We can learn to live and let live, look at closed doors as opportunities and learn trust our spiritual guides to take us where we need to be.  When we make decisions from a truly detached place; from a place of calm abiding, wisdom and love, we set the inner spirit free to move us toward all that is good, true, right and lovely in our lives.

Namaste dear yoga students,

What a wonderful discussion ensued around the Gift from the Sea at our book discussion at Cedar Beach Friday night.    It is amazing how yogic wisdom is weaved throughout this precious body of work.  The central themes rotating around the need for solitude and creative pursuits in order to find your inner self as well as the importance in accepting and embracing changes in relationships and within ourselves.  If you haven’t gotten a chance to read it, I would highly recommend it.  As someone said in our discussion; as soon as you open the book and begin reading, it creates a calm flow of energy inside of you, both within the imagery of the beach and the beautiful, poetic rhythm of her words.  Hoping to do another book discussion in the future.  Thank you to all who attended for the conversation, insights, laughter and connection.  Oh and special thanks to the Gift from the Sea!

Beach Yoga Tomorrow Morning at 8:45am – Its looking like it will be beautiful!!

Greetings dear yoga students,

If you want to know how you got to where you are today, look at your past actions.  If you want to know what your future will be like, look at your present actions.  Its that simple.  We create our future everyday  with what we do in the present.  Tapas, the Niyama described as disciplined action, helps us create the future we long for.  Take a look at your present state of mind, your present schedule and what it is comprised of and ask yourself if it is aiding you in creating the life you desire.  Tapas helps us to create the fertile ground for healthy growth to occur.  Tapas is getting on your yoga mat, getting to bed early, creating space in your life because the disciplines help to create an ultimate calm state of mine.   Tapas enlightens our days with determination and resolve to stay on this path we have chosen, courageously forging our way through this beautiful journey called life with joy.

The Three Pillars of Yoga

Tapas: Discipline

Svadhayaya:  Study of the self and of  Spiritual Texts

Ishvara Pranidhana:  Devotion and Surrender to the Divine

Greetings dear yoga students,

What a gift to be able to retreat from our worldly life and dive in to yoga’s spiritual teachings.  Over the next few weeks, I hope to be able to shed some light on each of the three pillars of yoga stated above.   These three pillars are part of yoga’s ethical practices known as Niyamas and are the second limb of the Eight Limb Path.  Niyamas are personal observances and give us the tools to lead a happy, joyful , well-balanced life.  These three observances in particular are highlighted in the Yoga Sutras as Kriya Yoga.  The Sanskrit word, Kriya, means  to take action;  so Kriya Yoga is the yoga of action.  By concentrating on these principles and discovering where you  may need to take action in your life (making a plan)  the ancient masters tell us we will  discover a more fulfilling, joyful life  and also create the fertile ground for our life’s purpose and deepest desires to become manifest.

“Through practice, I’ve come to see that the deepest source of my misery is not wanting things to be the way they are. Not wanting myself to be the way I am. Not wanting the world to be the way it is. Not wanting others to be the way they are. Whenever I’m suffering, I find this ‘war with reality’ to be at the heart of the problem.”

Greetings dear yoga students,

Welcome to another glorious day. As you meander through your daily round, think about something you may be “at war” with in your own life. Living life on life’s terms is not an endeavor for the faint hearted. As humans, we seem to always want to fix things or create fantasies and repeat mantras like; “if only things were different then I could be happy”. True inner contentment only comes from within. We must make the decision to be happy now. Now is all we have. This moment, this day, this family, this body, this home, this job, this stretch of 24 hours to live our life. Cultivate acceptance with whatever or whoever is in your life today. Be the one that brings serenity to your interactions and act with your heart on situations that seem to baffle you. Try and do more reflection that reaction and you may find, things are exactly as they should be. Relax, let go and focus today on being at peace with reality. The war within quiets when you cultivate Santosha – contentment; allow yourself to bloom wherever you are planted, within whatever circumstances life finds you.

“Yoga helps us to remember again and again what we have forgotten…

that our bodies, our minds and our lives are pliable, changeable and capable of creating any experience we choose to create.”

If you are feeling stuck, stagnant or blocked at this time, please try and remember that even in the “down” times, we are still moving forward.  It is imperative, however,  that during dormancy we try and trust that the abundance of the universe is on its way; we are most likely being prepared for something much greater, much more expansive than our limited minds can understand.  Even when we are not sure of our next step, all we need do is stumble forward in faith, in perseverance and in the knowing that at any given moment we have the opportunity to make the necessary changes in our lives toward health, well being and happiness.  Allow your yoga practice to be a beautiful reminder of just how moldable our bodies, minds and spirits can become one compassionate,  patient, focused moment at a time.
