Birds are a miracle because they prove to us there is a finer, simpler state of being which we may strive to attain.
                                                          Doug Coupland

Greetings dear yoga students,

I have been so enamored by all the birds are visiting my feeder this year.  So many varieties, sizes, shapes and colors fill my vision with vibrancy and joy.  I often think about the way they live.  So simply in tune with each other and nature.  They are a constant reminder,  as I sit at my computer  watching them swoop and land and soar,   not to take life so seriously. Much like my time on my yoga mat, observing them reminds me to trust, let go and fly into the moments of my life with purpose, freedom and joy. Birds are truly a miracle to behold, they prove to us that there is a finer state of being we can strive to attain and that state of being is yoga.

Greetings Dearest Yoga Students,

Have faith in your practice and the ability of your yoga to calm, nurture, enliven and release.  When we move our panic energy our practice through breath work, postures, chanting, and/or meditation we effect not only our physical bodies, but our emotional bodies as well.  Moving prana (life force energy) within ourselves allows us to be more open, more willing, more free to connect to that universal prana that is available for the taking and connects us to all beings everywhere.  In essence, it allows us to show up for ourselves and for others in our life.  Trust your yoga to move through you, all you have to do is show up and be present.  Your Yoga mat will catch you if you fall.

Await the auspicious moment when one will be free from pleasure and pain, desire and a sense of worldly gain–since, attention should be on the perfection of means and not the end, which is bound to follow if the means are perfected.  To accomplish this one should scrupulously observe all aspect of sadacara

 Avalon Yoga Hike
Be gentle with yourself and others as you strive to walk this road less traveled remembering that we truly cannot become enlightened beings by simply sitting on a meditation cushion, doing yoga poses or reading spiritual material;  WE MUST ADHERE TO AN ETHICAL PRACTICE if we are to move forward in our journey back home to our true selves and do the work we were meant to do in this lifetime. When our intention is pure, our paths will become illuminated like moonlight on a dark night and others will follow your example. Allow yourself to take risks, be willing to be vulnerable;  there is a song in your heart waiting to be sung and in walking the true and right path you will find inside you the ability to give yourself fully to your unique, beautiful style of music that lives inside your soul.

Avalon Yoga Hike Update – Saturday, October 18th 9:15am

Yoga Hike at Beautiful Avalon Park

Saturday, October 18th, 915-1130am

Join me for a relaxed hike through the beautiful Avalon Park in Stony Brook where we will share a yoga class in natures studio. All levels, ages welcome. Namaste fellow adventurers!! Meet at the Duck Pond at 9:15am   Read on to note a little change of schedule…..upon further research and a preliminary walk through Avalon yesterday, I discovered that it is against park rules to do a group yoga class in the actual park as they try to reserve this special place for trail walking and contemplation. Also, the area I picked for the class, as well as the Labyrinth is closed off for Fall re-seeding. So we will now meet at the duck pond (right on Harbor Road – you can park anywhere along main street), do a brief warm up standing sequence (you can leave your mats in the car until we return) and end our hike back at the duck pond for a cool down class. I did acquire permission from Avalon to do a group hike and also permission from the Ward Melville Historical Society to use the area by the duck pond for yoga. Lets hope for great weather!! See below for schedule.

$15 per person with half of the proceeds to go to the Invited Inn Soup Kitchen in Rocky Point to feed the hungry among us. Bring Yoga Mat, Water and wear layered clothing and comfortable walking shoes. Please note there are no public bathrooms at Avalon Park

Schedule

9:15-9:30am Arrive and meet at the duck pond. You can park anywhere along main street and a few spots are available at the Grist Mill. (Leave your mats in the car, you won’t need them till we get back)

9:30-10am Warm up standing yoga sequence by the ponds

10-11am Explore Avalon Park

11:1130am Cool Down Yoga Class by the pond (retrieve your mat from the car and meet by the pond. You may want to place a towel under your mat if you don’t want it to get dirty)

“Again and again ~ Return like Mountain ~ Release like Ocean ~ Relax like Sky ~And Rest ~ Rest in the Heart of Pure Awareness” Living Buddha

yoga green tree

Greetings dear yoga students,

This quote reminds me that there is a need for us to keep coming back again and again to rest in our true selves. However, to balance our energies we must seek different modalities to meet our ever changing needs; sometimes we need to relax like the sky,  be still like a  mountain or release the past  like the ocean.  Tune in to exactly what you may be needing today.  Draw upon the power of nature to nurture you and give you what you need.  As the season transitions to shorter days and longer nights, you may feel your energy, mood and mind shifting so try and adjust your daily round to help you be true to yourself.  In this way we begin to live in the natural rhythms of nature, returning again to rest in the awareness of the heart and what truly matters in your life.

So Much Happiness

It is difficult to know what to do with so much happiness.
With sadness there is something to rub against,
A wound to tend with lotion and cloth.
When the world falls in around you, you have pieces to pick up,
Something to hold in your hands, like ticket stubs or change.

But happiness floats.
It doesn’t need you to hold it down.
It doesn’t need anything.
Happiness lands on the roof of the next house, singing,
And disappears when it wants to.
You are happy either way.
Even the fact that you once lived in a peaceful tree house
And now live over a quarry of noise and dust
Cannot make you unhappy.
Everything has a life of its own,
It too could wake up filled with possibilities
Of coffee cake and ripe peaches,
And love even the floor which needs to be swept,
The soiled linens and scratched records….

Since there is no place large enough
To contain so much happiness,
You shrug, you raise your hands, and it flows out of you
Into everything you touch. You are not responsible.
You take no credit, as the night sky takes no credit
For the moon, but continues to hold it, and to share it,
And in that way, be known.

~ Naomi Shihab Nye ~

One of yoga’s most beautiful niyamas (ethical practices to cultivate) is Santosha or Contentment.    With Santosha, there is less doing and more a sitting with, a being present for, a quiet contemplation to look around and be content in the moment, in this very moment.  Today notice how many times you might sabotage your contentment.  Sometimes we worry that things are too good, that it won’t last.  Sometimes we think we should do more, be more or get more.   Be aware of when you feel content today  and allow yourself the joy and peace that cultivating santosha brings, however fleeting or far between,

Aparigraha
greedlessness, non-attachment

The yogi feels that the collection or hoarding of things implies a lack of faith in God and in himself to provide for the future….By the observance of aparigraha, the yogi makes his life as simple as possible and trains his mind not to feel the loss or the lack of anything. Then everything he really needs will come to him by itself at the proper time.”

Iyengar

om in the lotus

Hari Om Dear Yoga Students,

As this Fall draws us inward I wish for your eyes to see all the abundance that you already possess right now in this moment in this time in your life. One beautiful morning this past week I walked down to the shore, a little less than a mile from my house and  was embraced by the serene beauty  all around me. It caused me to stop and I experienced a moment that seemed to have transformed into one of those magical moments suspended in time. I paused, connected to my breath, did some simple yoga postures and sat on a piece of wood to silently sit in meditation.. As the rhythmic sound of the waves made their way into my mind and the gentle warm breeze caressed my skin, I felt so completely connected to all that was around me. The feeling of abundance and gratitude seemed to encapsulate my entire being. If we take even a moment to connect with all that is precious and dear to us in our lives right now, we allow the divine light to shine into our hearts. A moment like this can change your entire day from one that is ordinary to one that is full of miracles and we seem to lack nothing.

The Perfect Cup

Its time to see the flaws of myself and stop being alarmed
It’s time for me to halt my drive for perfection and to accept my blemishes

It’s time for me to receive slowly evolving growth;
the kind that comes in God’s own good time
and does not heed to my panicky pushing.

It’s time for me to embrace my humaness and love my incompleteness.
It’s time for me to cherish the unwanted,
to welcome the unknown,
to treasure the unfulfilled

If I wait untill I am perfect,
I will always be unsatified and ungrateful

If I wait until all the flaws,
chips and cracks disappear
I will be the cup that sits on the shelf and is never used
Greetings dearest yoga students,
Hope this email finds you embracing this day with all its so called “imperfections”.  The sooner we move into acceptance and embrace who we are in the moment and how our life is in the present, the sooner we will allow peace to flow within us. Think of the beauty of a tree, a landscape, an old picture or a favorite pair of worn out jeans; it is the imperfections that make them beautiful, interesting and alive.  By embracing our humaness we also acknowledge our divinity.  It is through this human experience that we come to know the sacred in life.   Do not wait, cease this day and open up to the ways in which you can be used to better the lives of those around you in any small way.  When you learn to love the imperfections in yourself, you unconciously give others the permission to accept and love themselves just as they are.  In your imperfections you are incredibly perfect and exactly who you are meant to be!

Yoga this Week – May 26, 2014 – Happy Memorial Day!

True heroism is remarkably sober, very undramatic.

It is not the urge to surpass all others at whatever cost,

but the urge to serve others at whatever cost.
Arthur Ashe

Greetings dear yoga students,

Hoping this email finds you enjoying a peaceful Memorial Day Holiday as we honor those that have fought in service to our country. If we allow service to be at the center of our lives; in our work, families and communities, our lives will have true meaning and our dharma (one’s righteous duty or virtuous path) will surely be fulfilled.

hanuman

Hanuman – The Monkey God

Hanuman is known as a powerful example of true devotion and service.  He is worshiped as a symbol of physical strength, fierce perseverance and devotion.  In the epic tale of the Ramayana he overcomes ordeals, obstacles and fear enabling him to perform supernatural feats  in order to save his master, Rama’s wife, Sita; all in the honor of service.

Become aware of where or who you are meant to serve in this lifetime, connect to your dharma.  Life is fleeting, our greatest accomplishments are those of the heart  , so put your energy into serving your fellow human being and although it may not be dramatic, rest assured it is true heroism in its purist form
