Yoga this week – June 27, 2021
“I understood that the attachment to myself and my image … was actually taking me away from my Self, away from this wonderful opportunity to just sit, just breathe….When under the sway of this obsession, my mind’s attention was always in the fantasized future, or the idealized or devalued past – never present to the reality of the moment.” ― Stephen Cope
Our Ego is a complicated part of our psyche. On one hand it’s the part of the right brain that allows us to take action, to make plans and to accomplish what we desire in our lifetime. It drives us forward and prompts us to be productive and presentable; to suit up and show up. These are all good things to aspire to. On the other hand, our ego can work subtly, powerfully and insidiously to take us out of the present moment with its insatiable appetite for validation. Lost in the throes of egoism (Asmita), we believe our self-worth relies on temporal things; what we do, accomplish, have, what we look like, or any other misidentification with the true self that inevitably causes great, unnecessary suffering (dukha) because the ego is never satisfied.
Yogic practices,(self control, self study, asana, pranayama and meditation), when done with patience over time, give us the courage to resist the ego’s call by yoking us to the present moment where our authentic, eternal self lives In short, by committing to this path we keep our ego in check because all of these practices create inner tranquility and equanimity, we stay in the stream of goodness and out of self-seeking, ego driven rewards.

Philosophy Discussion group

Namaste All,
In speaking with a few students it was decided that a philosophy discussion group would be a nice addition to our classes. We spend a lot of time last year chatting and sharing on zoom and it became a great support for some of us. We will shoot to meet once a month, or so, beginning with this coming Monday evening at 7pm. I will present a yogic teaching, a few minutes of meditation and the rest of the time will be sharing. Let me know if you are interested in joining us. Please register using the link below so I know if you are coming. https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZUtcOqvrj4tEtGtS6YKkk9SQjPip9E6Vlv4
(There is no charge for this group (donations accepted thru venmo if called to)
Also, we have an on going book club that meets once a month or so. If you are interested in joining us our next meeting is July 15th at 7pm and we just began reading The Chelsea Girls by Fiona Davis which proves to be an entertaining read. Here’s the link to join the Book Clubz group. https://bookclubz.com/clubs/21922/join/5810d8/
Shanti!!

Greetings dear yoga students,
“She began to realize that identifying her practice with things that could be lost [advanced postures or deep states of meditation], would always leave her susceptible to fear anything that could be taken away through sickness, aging or life circumstances, was not a very wise thing to stand on. It was then that she realized the only security lay in using her yoga practice to tether her awareness to the part of herself that was and is eternal. ” Donna Farhi

Avidya – Spiritual Ignorance
Asmita – Ego – Persona -False Self
Raga – Attachment to Pleasure
Dvesa – Aversion to Pain
Adhinivhesa – Fear of Death/Loss
These Kleshas or misperceptions are basically the core confusion of what is permanent with what is impermanent and the suffering we cause ourselves when we try to hold on to these impermanent things. We all have fear of losing things we hold dear. It may be loved ones, our jobs, our health, our strength, our physical appearance or the myriad of ego driven personas we believe ourselves to be. The yoga sutras tell us that if we are aware of these Kleshas at the root, and Do not allow them to take hold in our psyches, we can release their power. Finding rest within the eternal part of ourselves illuminates the truth that uncertainty is a core part of our existence. This understanding is the key that gives us the courage to see through false promises and lack of control so we can ultimately let go to live with freedom, peace and joy!
