Yoga this Week – November 15, 2014

May all hearts be at ease. May our contentment promote the energies to alleviate suffering and turn ignorance into knowledge. May the cultivation of santosha guide us to courageous action, deeper community and greater love of all sentient beings.

Greetings Dearest Yoga Students,

Santosha is one of the Niyamas outlined in the eight limbs of yoga.  Niyamas are ethical practices that cultivate inner peace and awareness about ourselves.  Santosha means contentment.  To be content with whatever is.  Having the good fortune of participating in a workshop with Todd Norian this past week enlightened me to a new way of thinking about Santosha.  He spoke about life being a series of problems that need our constant attention, creativity, compassion and openness.  We all know that once one issue, obstacle or problem is solved, right behind it rolls in another one, like waves on the ocean; the issues may seem bigger, smaller or take a different shape, but never the less, they keep coming.  What Todd so eloquently eluded to is that all we really need to change is our perspective; to change our obstacles into stepping stones on which we grow.  To be content in the action of solving, resolving or figuring out solutions while letting go of the result.  Contentment is now, not when things get better, not when we have all we think we need, it is now, in this moment.  It allows us to love all of life, opening our hearts and clearing it out of judgment as to what we consider “good” or “bad”.  Contentment allows our hearts to be at ease and turns our ignorance into knowledge.

Yoga this Week – November 2, 2014

Be Self-controlled!
Give!
Be Compassionate!
Brihadaranyaka Upanishad
wide forward bend
This is the true aim of yoga, this is the goal.  To learn to control the mind when it leans towards selfishness, egoism, fear and negativity.  The ultimate aim of all our yoga practices are to bring our focus inward so we realize all the peace we seek comes from our true divine nature.  A yogi feels the lack of noting, therefore, there is no need for hoarding, competition or greed.  The yogi knows all comes from and all will return to the divine source; that in our natural state we are all one.
Be Self-Controlled by following an ethical path. Give by coming from a place of abundance.  Be Compassionate so others can gain strength from your strong spirit.
This is the aim of yoga, these are the true goals.

“It is the wilderness in
the mind, the desert wastes in the heart through which one wanders lost and a stranger. When one is a
stranger to oneself then one is estranged from others too. If one is out of touch with oneself, then one
cannot touch others.”
Anne Morrow Lindbergh, Gift from the Sea

Namaste dear yoga students,

What a wonderful discussion ensued around the Gift from the Sea at our book discussion at Cedar Beach Friday night.    It is amazing how yogic wisdom is weaved throughout this precious body of work.  The central themes rotating around the need for solitude and creative pursuits in order to find your inner self as well as the importance in accepting and embracing changes in relationships and within ourselves.  If you haven’t gotten a chance to read it, I would highly recommend it.  As someone said in our discussion; as soon as you open the book and begin reading, it creates a calm flow of energy inside of you, both within the imagery of the beach and the beautiful, poetic rhythm of her words.  Hoping to do another book discussion in the future.  Thank you to all who attended for the conversation, insights, laughter and connection.  Oh and special thanks to the Gift from the Sea!

Every time we come into the present moment we unlock our ideas about what our life should look like.  Yoga helps us realize the unlimited potential that is inherent in every moment..  It shapes the way we feel about ourselves, our world and our dreams.  When we experience the radiance of our bodies, the power of our breath and the qualities of a calm mind, a long hidden truth comes floating to the service; that we are more than the sometimes limited labels we place on ourselves.  We remember again what we have forgotten, that we are more than our bodies, more than our thoughts, more than even this limited time we are encapsulated in called our life.  When we realize this truth again and again, we can give ourselves permission to dream dreams, discover new passions and then cultivate the trust and strength to materialize our desires.  So allow your yoga to be more than achieving some outward expression of physical form, allow YOUR yoga to unlock the inner flexibility of your minds so your life can soar beyond your wildest dreams.

Yoga this Week – March 2, 2014

When you do yoga postures, surrender to the moment, be in the moment, don`t worry about weather you can touch your toes or not, just experience the process.
Then try to carry this attitude into the rest of your day, away from tension, guilt and anxiety.
Experience is the door to the here and now.

                    Amrit Kala

forward bend

Experience the process.  Everything is a  process.  The process is the road we walk from here to there.  When we are truly present as our life unfolds, worry, tension, guilt and anxiety take a back seat.  Surrender to this moment, try not to try too hard to shape it into something it is not or something you think it should be.  The process will reveal more of what you are supposed to learn, what you need to do and where this path you are on is leading.  Let go and allow yourself to simply experience the process (even if it is a difficult one).  knowing with true presence and awareness, the road you walk is leading you to higher ground.

At times our own light goes out and is rekindled by a spark from another person.
Each of us has cause to think with deep gratitude of those who have lighted the flame within us.  ~ Albert Schweitzer

Dear Yoga Students,

Much gratitude now and always to all of you who show up week after week to your yoga mat.  Whether you realize it or not, your presence in class not only lights your own flame but also supports others that practice beside you on their path.  Sometimes all we need is a spark to rekindle our flame; a smile, a kind work, a new idea, a sweet heartfelt hug.  Never underestimate the power a small gesture can create.  May you and yours enjoy the small moments, those precious times together when we express our gratitude for each other and all we have in our lives.

Yoga this Week – November 17, 2013

**The road is all paved and ready so classes can   be held in our cozy, warm  yoga room; yay!***

“Without intention, all these postures, these breathing practices, meditations, and the like can become little more than ineffectual gestures. When animated by intention, however, the simplest movement, the briefest meditation, and the contents of one breath cycle are made potent.”

                                                                      Donna Farhi

Good Morning Dearest Yoga Students,

It feels wonderful to be wide awake on this glorious November morning.    Setting an intention can be extremely powerful, not only for your yoga practice but for your day, your week or your life.  With an intention set, our mind seems to calm down and we can rest in the fact that we know we are doing the right thing; that we are on course.

Whatever you are doing today, after reading this, stop for a moment or two and see if an intention for this day comes up for you.  It could be an intention to remain calm if difficulties are awaiting you.  It could be an intention to release judgement or cultivate joy inside yourself.  Whatever you wish for yourself, try setting an intention to cultivate that quality inside.  If you want to be happier, intend to be happy.  If you want more friends, intend to be friendly.  If you want more serenity, intend to act serene.  It may sound to simplistic, but it actually is.  With the full moon energy tonight,  you may want to go a step further and write your intention down to make it more concrete, the written word has much power.  As you move into your next task for the day after you read this whether you are going to do laundry, rake leaves, make breakfast for your family;  do it with an intention in your mind and notice what arises.  Live your life by design….try repeating the following mantra to keep you on your way:

“I am flowing down the river of my life, steering myself in the right direction”

The Goddess Sarasvati

Sara:  The one who gives the essence & Sva: of  our true Self

The Goddess Sarasvati is worshipped for her creativity, wisdom, purity and gentleness.   She is said to bestow eloquence, intelligence and artistic inspiration to all who meditate on her transcendental qualities.   Her calming peaceful presence reminds us of the great power of Shakti (the feminine energy that is said to be the catalyst of change and creation with love as the driving force) and the ultimate divine mother.  As this last day of Navrarti (the nine day festival celebrating the divine mother in all her forms) comes to a close, we honor Goddess Sarasvati  and call upon her to connect us to the essence of our own true, divine nature where all of these beautiful qualities have always, and will always exist.

“May the great river of Sarasvati overflow and grant us her grace”

Yoga this Week – September 29, 2013

“Have patience with everything that remains unsolved in your heart.  Try to love the questions themselves, like locked rooms and like books written in a foreign language.  Do not now look for the answers.  They cannot now be given to you because you could not live them.  It is a question of experiencing everything.  At present you need to live the question.  Perhaps you will gradually, without even noticing it, find yourself experiencing the answer, some distant day.”
                                    Rainer Maria Rilke
Greetings dearest yoga students,
Being at peace with the unknown is one of the greatest accomplishments we can acheive moment by moment.  To be “okay” with not knowing how things will turn out means we must first banish fear and replace it with faith.  Increasing our capacity for faith immediatly allows us to let go of our percieved control over our life.  Having faith that things will turn out alright enables us experience all of life without having to figure everything out.   Living the question means to let the answers be revealed when it is time so that you can remain in the present moment without anxiety. Many precious moments are squandered away overthinking situations that either have already happened or haven’t happened yet.   So try to LOVE the question that this day brings as if you were turning a corner on a beautiful mountain and be open to the beauty that the landscape of your life lays out before you.

“Amazing isn’t it how some people see the basket half empty and others see it half full.  Some see life hopeless; others hopeful.  Even when things are less than perfect, if you can think of the good, the beautiful, the hopeful, you’ll be more than sustained–you’ll conquer
 –
 Greetings dear. beautiful yoga students,
 –
Remind yourself today that negative thinking will never be productive.  When you find your mind turning to those dark places, take control and change your perspective on whatever situation is baffling you at the time.  Think upon whatever is true, beautiful and right about what surrounds you.  Experiment with this and put it into practice in small ways.  If your day is going less than perfect, re-frame it in your mind.  Our minds have the power to create and bring into fruition whatever it rests upon.  Allow your mind to rest upon what it truly wonderful in your life right now….put it into practice and try to enjoy being a learner.  You may just find that by focusing on the positive,  the peace and joy of the divine spirit that lives in all things will be close at hand supporting, and guiding your day.
