**Please be aware to the changes in schedule.  We will be combing our Monday and Thursday evening classes into ONE Wednesday night class at 730pm for the next few weeks, stay tuned to email notifications….  Monday night should be returning to schedule as well as some monthly weekend morning classes.  Beach Yoga isn’t far off…either

Sorry for any inconvenience…

rumi

“There is a voice that doesn’t use words.  Listen”  Rumi

How often to get quiet enough to hear beyond words.  Can we stop and be still long enough to hear to rustling of the wind, the drops of rain, your footsteps on the path?  Go inside of yourself for even a few uninterrupted moments and you may begin to hear sacred sounds, feel an inner vibration, or sense a calm presence that is beyond words.  One of my favorite Rumi poems speaks of this phenomenon.

Out beyond ideas of wrongdoing and rightdoing,
there is a field. I’ll meet you there.

When the soul lies down in that grass,
the world is too full to talk about.
Ideas, language, even the phrase “each other” doesn’t make any sense

As we allow that voice that is beyond judgment to speak without words, we find the very freedom and serenity we long for and we can meet in the field of infinite possibility.  Be open to new ideas of being (and new schedules).  Allow yourself space to sit in silence so you can cultivate the fine art of listening and try to hear beyond words, beyond ideas, beyond separateness allowing your soul to “lie down in that grass” for a while.

“The things that matter most in our lives are not fantastic or grand. They are the moments when we touch one another.” ~ Jack Kornfield

Yoga this Week - February 12, 2012

Greetings Dearest Yoga Students,

Hoping this email finds you well and enjoying this first day of extended light.  Energy, renewal and rejuvenation is in the air.  Snow is melting, days are longer and winter is surely drawing to a close (we hope).  Take time in each day to ponder those things that matter most in your life:   The everlasting possessions of the heart.  Scan back through your memory bank and notice the times that stand apart.  Notice the feeling tone of times when you made a true connection with another human being, whether it be through a loving encounter, being that shoulder to cry on or being the one doing the crying.  It may be times when you  simply felt deeply connected on a level that could not be expressed with words.  We are meant to connect, to engage and help each other in this lifetime.  It may be something as small as a smile in passing, a heart felt phone call or a visit to a friend in need.  Don’t hesitate to connect.  Listen to your heart, trust your hunches and allow the small acts of kindness to give your life purpose, happiness and meaning.

Yoga this Week – March 2, 2014

When you do yoga postures, surrender to the moment, be in the moment, don`t worry about weather you can touch your toes or not, just experience the process.
Then try to carry this attitude into the rest of your day, away from tension, guilt and anxiety.
Experience is the door to the here and now.

                    Amrit Kala

forward bend

Experience the process.  Everything is a  process.  The process is the road we walk from here to there.  When we are truly present as our life unfolds, worry, tension, guilt and anxiety take a back seat.  Surrender to this moment, try not to try too hard to shape it into something it is not or something you think it should be.  The process will reveal more of what you are supposed to learn, what you need to do and where this path you are on is leading.  Let go and allow yourself to simply experience the process (even if it is a difficult one).  knowing with true presence and awareness, the road you walk is leading you to higher ground.

Yoga this Week – February 23, 2014

If we go with the river, the energy of a thousand mountain streams will be with us, filling our hearts with courage and enthusiasm
. If we resist the river, we will feel ranked and tired as we tread water in the same place”.

Elizabeth Lesser

Greetings dearest yoga students,

Hoping this email finds you enjoying sunshine!  Allow yourself to flow with life today.  Let go of your perceived control and try to be okay with the uncertainty that this human life is destined to experience.  Remember that the goal in life is not to achieve some kind of concrete guarantee of future outcomes,  but think of it as more of a journey  towards a relaxed attitude toward the truth;  that we really never know what the future will hold.  Pema Chodron tells us that “a real cause of suffering is not being able to tolerate uncertainly – and thinking that it’s perfectly sane, perfectly normal, to deny the fundamental groundlessness of being human”.    This “groundlessness” does not have to have a negative connotation or be something to fear.  We can walk each day with faith, do the next right thing that is in front of us and relax into the mystery.  Our life may unfold to surpass our wildest dreams if we just dare to let go of the shore and flow down that river.  It is in this forward flow that; “The energy of a thousand mountain streams will be with us, filling our hearts with courage and enthusiasm” allowing us to truly enjoy and be present for the scenery of this special day.

Yoga this Week – February 15, 2014

“Shall I tell you what I find beautiful about you?
You are at your very best when things are worst”
                                                                  Quote from “Starman” movie

Utkatasana (chair pose)  exemplifies the amazing ability of the human spiirt to rise up and find the strength, grace and power we didn’t even know we had.  We have all had experiences  where   the bottom seems to fall out from underneath our life; a devastating phone call comes or some unexpected turn of events sends life into a tailspin.   It is at precisely these times, when help seems to come out of nowhere; people organize themselves to help, families let go of their differences to work together for the common goal, friends come from all directions.  It is at our worst,  that we become our very best.

If you have a moment today, take chair pose for a few breaths.  Breathe into the grounding at your feet, feel how your heart lifts and your hands reach up toward the sky.  Embodying this powerful pose allows us to experience our own power and also the source of power around us that enables us to lift ourselves  up and bask in the light and love that is always there, either to ignite our own spirits or maybe even more importantly, to lift others up. Thich Nhat Hahn says “No Mud, No Lotus” which means that we must go through the dark, the struggles, the sticky stuff to reveal our true beauty.   In the depths of the winter, dig deep and reach high.  Spring is surely on its way and  we await its coming with joy, strength and resolve.  Meanwhile, enjoy the snow!!

Yoga this Week – February 9, 2014

Self-preservation or attachment to life is the subtlest of all afflictions. It is found even in wise men.

– B.K.S. Iyengar. Light On The Yoga Sutras, p116

Abhinivesa: Clinging to life, fear of death

Our fifth and final Klesha is Abhinivesa.  We all know we will die.  From the moment we are born, we move through the stages of life and observe how others who came before us or after us also move along life’s journey.  The more we can embrace the impermanence of our life, the more we can  truly cherish our journey.  Fear of death on a more gross level can also relate to fear of losing what we have; whether it be a loved one, a job, our possessions, our health or our control.  It is natural to have some anxiety about losing these things but when we allow our fear to direct our actions or our thoughts it can  cause an amazing amount of unnecessary suffering.  This kind of suffering can inhibit our ability to take chances or make necessary changes in our lives.

If we consider our yoga practice as self-study (svadyhayaya), we can learn a lot about our fears.  Many times I witness students getting frustrated or apologetic is they fall out of a balance pose.  However, in my observation I believe that when a student falls out she is truly working her edge and therefore, risking losing the pose.    If we learn to trust that even in falling we gain, we can relax around the idea that losing something is not always bad.  When we embrace death, we begin to live.

Take this lesson in Abhinivesa and understand that clinging to something we know is impermanent impedes our growth.  When we die to something, something new can come in its place.  Death is really not the end.  Death can be thought of as a total transformation.  The death of a caterpillar gives birth to a butterfly.  The ending of a yoga posture brings new energy into the body.  The death of a loved one can shock us into understanding the fragility of our own life and therefore, allow us to live more fully in time.  The Kleshas remind us of how we can misperceive the realities of life, even death.   Embrace your fears, see them for what they are and instead of being afraid of the dark, light a candle and fill the space with courage, hope and love.
