Yoga this Week – October 19, 2013

The intuitive mind is a sacred gift and the rational mind is a faithful servant. We have created a society that honors the servant and has forgotten the gift.

                                             — Albert Einstein

Hari Om dearest yoga students,

Hoping this beautiful fall morning finds you in some form of gratitude for this gift of today.  The way of the yogi warrior is the way of the heart.  The intuitive mind is led by the heart.  Our yoga practice awakens a deeper awareness of our minds, bodies and spirits and it is in this awakening that we can begin to “feel” into our lives instead of “thinking” through our lives.  Although intellectual ability is often the first to be consulted to solve problems, create plans, or learn new abilities, it is truly the intuitive mind that will always lead you down the sacred path of the heart.

Inside your heart are the yamas and niyamas.

The Five Yamas

Ahimsa : nonviolence   Satya: truthfulness   Asteya: nonstealing   Brahmacharya: temperance   Aparigraha: noncovetousness

The Five Niyamas

Saucha: cleanliness  Santosha: contentment  Tapas: heat; austerities Svadhyaya: study of the sacred scriptures and of one’s self  Isvara pranidhana: surrender to God

To find the way, close your eyes, listen closely and find that light within you, that energy moving, that feeling tone that points the way.   We are naturally pure, go deeper, your intrinsic goodness will move you towards the most ethical, loving way. Without studying a single yoga sutra, we know inside ourselves the path.  Honor this gift, the sacred intuitive mind and allow your intellect to serve.  For this day, allow the words of Ghandi to resonate on a deep level;

“The Culture of the mind must be subservient to the heart”

Yoga this Week – October 13, 2013

The Goddess Sarasvati

Sara:  The one who gives the essence & Sva: of  our true Self

The Goddess Sarasvati is worshipped for her creativity, wisdom, purity and gentleness.   She is said to bestow eloquence, intelligence and artistic inspiration to all who meditate on her transcendental qualities.   Her calming peaceful presence reminds us of the great power of Shakti (the feminine energy that is said to be the catalyst of change and creation with love as the driving force) and the ultimate divine mother.  As this last day of Navrarti (the nine day festival celebrating the divine mother in all her forms) comes to a close, we honor Goddess Sarasvati  and call upon her to connect us to the essence of our own true, divine nature where all of these beautiful qualities have always, and will always exist.

“May the great river of Sarasvati overflow and grant us her grace”

Co-Creating Your Life – A Vision Board Workshop – October 30th 7-9pm.  In this workshop we will each create a Vision Board.  A Vision Board is a collection of images, words, affirmations or drawings that serve as a spirit-led guide for manifesting, planning and co-creating the life you are meant to live.   Vision boards help you identify your soul’s desires and give  clarity as well as focus to your intentions to help you live your life by design and not default.  The workshop will consist of meditation, gentle movements, and creating our boards.  Cost is $20 with part of the proceeds to go to the Invited Inn Soup Kitchen in Rocky Point.  Each participant must bring 3 to 5 magazines of random genres to be cut up and used for our images as well as a favorite picture of yourself that you feel projects your inner spirit.   Please reserve your spot as soon as possible.

Yoga this Week – September 29, 2013

“Have patience with everything that remains unsolved in your heart.  Try to love the questions themselves, like locked rooms and like books written in a foreign language.  Do not now look for the answers.  They cannot now be given to you because you could not live them.  It is a question of experiencing everything.  At present you need to live the question.  Perhaps you will gradually, without even noticing it, find yourself experiencing the answer, some distant day.”
                                    Rainer Maria Rilke
Greetings dearest yoga students,
Being at peace with the unknown is one of the greatest accomplishments we can acheive moment by moment.  To be “okay” with not knowing how things will turn out means we must first banish fear and replace it with faith.  Increasing our capacity for faith immediatly allows us to let go of our percieved control over our life.  Having faith that things will turn out alright enables us experience all of life without having to figure everything out.   Living the question means to let the answers be revealed when it is time so that you can remain in the present moment without anxiety. Many precious moments are squandered away overthinking situations that either have already happened or haven’t happened yet.   So try to LOVE the question that this day brings as if you were turning a corner on a beautiful mountain and be open to the beauty that the landscape of your life lays out before you.

Yoga this Week – September 15, 2013

Nowhere  can man find a quieter or more untroubled retreat than in his own  soul.
Marcus  Aurelius

Greetings dear yoga students,

We had a wonderful time at the Yoga Darshana Center’s Restoration Retreat at Camp DeWolfe this past weekend.  It was both enlivening and restorative.  Being with a community of like minded people in a beautiful setting focusing on spiritual awareness is a wonderful way to connect back to your own soul healing capacities.  As I walked along the beach early Sunday morning alone preparing for the Fire Ceremony to come (we were to burn a paper with what we wished to let go of  in our lives and keep the paper with what we wish to bring in to our lives), I came across a horseshoe crab  that had died within its shell and was covered in barnacles and other shells that had stuck to it and the following insight came to me.

“We need to shed our current shell in order to grow or we will wither and die as the small space around us is no longer what we need.  If we hang on to the past and allow it to stick to us, we will be weighed down and be unable to move forward.  Let go, embrace change, become vulnerable, take care of yourself,  enjoy the journey and trust that the place you are traveling to is worth it”

True happiness comes from the joy of deeds well done, the zest of creating things new!

 Antoine de Saint-Exupery

Greetings dear yoga students,

One of my beloved teachers, Rolf Gates, once said to us, “Don’t allow your duties to become your burdens”.  This saying has always stuck with me.  Within the daily round of doing, taking care of, maintaining and getting things done, we can sometimes feel very burdened.  While completing our yearly ritual today of making and jarring up our tomato sauce, this quote hovered over me like the fine sunshine that was streaming down from the sky.  “Don’t allow your duties to become your burdens”.  The hard work we put in today pleasures us all year long; when we open a jar in mid-winter, when we give some to someone having hard times or when we simply share a meal with family and friends.  Doing something once a year creates a specialness, an excitement and my husband and I usually feel a “zest in creating” it (until right about now, when we are ready to collapse).  But, it is in our daily duties that we also need to find that joy for a job well done  .  Whatever your  duties consist of this week, try to look at them with a fresh attitude.  If your duties are really become your burdens, try to change the way you do them, creating an atmosphere that promotes happiness or give yourself a special reward for completing the task.  If your duties still seem heavy to carry, simply look back at the end of the week and find true happiness knowing your deeds were well done to the best of your ability with an intention of love and service for all.

The reward of a thing well done, is having done it.

Yoga this Week and Yoga Paddle Event Date Change

“It is a mistake to look too far ahead.  Only one link in the chain of destiny can be handled at a time”

-Sir Winston Churchill

Learn how yoga can help you stay in the present moment

Breathe into this present moment.  When we try to look too far into the future we only deny ourselves the serenity being in the now..  Breathe, relax and feel your life as it is .  Allow each activity each thought to remind you we are not in a race to get to the future.  The future becomes the future one moment, one breath at a time.    When we practice yoga in the true sense of the word (to unite our mind, body and spirit in the present moment),    our mind is free from worry and anxiety and open to the abundance that is all around us and in us.   When we free ourselves from the wasted energy that worry brings we are free to be open to allow joy to  fill our day and to make that choice  to see what is beautiful, right and lovely in our world.
