Yoga this Week – January 26, 2014 – No Friday Morning Class

“Do not allow past experiences to be imprinted on your mind. Perform asanas each time with a fresh mind and a fresh approach.

B.K.S. Iyengar

The Fourth Klesha  in the tree Avidya (misperception)

Dvesa

(Aversion or Rejection)

Dvesa expresses itself by rejecting or avoiding things. we believe will cause us pain.    We have a difficult experience and are afraid of repeating it, so we reject the people, the thoughts, and the settings that relate to that experience, assuming they will bring us pain again.  Dvesa also causes us to fear the unknown, which can be as obvious as the future or as subtle as our daily decision making. Here is an except from my teacher, Rolf Gates’ Year of Meditation blog in which he describes the attributes of fear which is the underlying aspect of Dvesa.

Year of meditation day 133: Using a “fear the mind killer” meditation while surfing.  by Rolf Gates

Fear of the size of the wave, fear of missing the wave, fear of being in the wrong place, fear of being in the right place, fear of being to tired or not ready.

Becoming empty of all of the fears that I see instead of the moment I am in.

I was breathing into the space created by letting go of fear  when a wave came to me. Then sun hit it from behind and I could see two dolphins surfing inside the wave.I turned and caught the wave.

Fear the life killer

When we are working from the misperception of dvesa (aversion and fear of repeating a negative experience) we loose the beauty of the present and will sadly miss what opportunities the universe is bringing to us.  Its can be thought of as tasting a chocolate cake and disliking the taste of that particular cake.  Then in another place and time you are offered a chocolate cake and you simply refuse to taste it in fear of it tasting like the one you had before.   So you see, it stops you from experiencing something entirely new and wonderful.  Even if you taste it and you don’t like it again, at least you were open to whet the present moment and all of its lessons has to offer.  In other words, breathe into the space that you create when you let go of fear and old patterns of thinking to have a fresh perspective.  Don’t miss the dolphins, hold your breath, catch the wave and let it take you to shores beyond your wildest dreams.

“Aversion, dvesa, after all, is the flip side of the same coin as attachment. When we resist or resent something, it is because of a remembrance that this thing caused us pain in the past.” Edwin Bryan  “Yoga Sutras of Patanjali.”

Yoga this Week – January 19, 2014

Greetings Dear Yoga Students,

When you are discontent, you always want more, more, more. Your desire can never be satisfied. But when you practice contentment,

you can say to yourself, ‘Oh yes – I already have everything that I really need.’
Dalai Lama

Raga (Unnecessary Want) or Desire

The Third Klesha of the Tree of Misperception

Raga expresses itself by making demands.  We want something today because it was pleasant yesterday, not because we really need it today.  We want things we do not have.  What we do have is not enough and we want more.  We want to keep what we are asked to give away.  This is raga.   Think of it as a longing which turns into a desire which turns into an obsession which leads to dissatisfaction with reality.  Desire can be gross, subtle or hidden; as can all the Kleshas.  Addiction to anything (substance abuse, gambling, food, etc) is Raga at its most gross form.  A subtler form of raga would be a nagging discontent that tells us we constantly need more to be happy.   It is like the donkey that chases the carrot dangling from a string just in front of him that he will never be able to eat because he doesn’t see the string is fixed on a pole attached to its own head.

Raga keeps us  in a state of ever wanting because even when we get what we think we want, the misperception of RAGA tells us it is not enough.   The way out of Raga is to practice Santosha, contentment, one of the Niyamas ( yogic ethics) outlined in Patanjali’s Sutras.  Santosha tells us that we all that we need in this moment to be happy.  Look around and within and take notice of all you have to be thankful for.  Happiness is not necessary getting everything you want but acknowledging and expressing gratitude for what you already have.  Santosha burns through the fires of Raga because when we realize we are blessed just to be alive in this moment and recognize the impermanence of all that is given to us,  our wanting and desirous behavior ceases to impede our path to serenity.  Be Still and Know…in this moment…you have all you need to be whole, to be happy and to be free.
“When at peace and content with oneself and others
(Santosha), supreme joy is celebrated.

Lion’s Breath

The Kleshas

Asmita – Ego

Our Ego is a complicated part of our psyche.  On one hand is it the part of the right brain that allows us to take action, to make plans and to accomplish what we desire in our lifetime.  It drives us forward.  On the other hand, it is when the ego side of us begins to attach our existence to what we do, what we have, the past or the future,  or any other outer impermanent feature of our lives,  that it causes suffering.  When our ego begins to whisper “you are not good enough as you are, you need to do more, be more. to be whole” is when it begins to increase anxiety and creates trouble inside ourselves and to others around us. The hunger for control and outer validation never gets satisfied and we remain in a state of depletion when we let the ego guide our days.

Yogic practices greatly soften the ego’s hold on us, Ethical Practices such as:  nonviolence, truthfulness, nonstealing, nonexcess, nonpossessiveness, purity, contentment, self-discipline, self-study and surrender to the divine plan as well as yoga asana, breath work and meditation all bring us closer to the reality of life and away from misperception.  In walking a spiritual path we keep our ego in check because these guidelines create inner tranquility and equanimity, we stay in the stream of goodness and out of self-seeking, ego driven rewards.

When something doesn’t feel quite like “you”, check in with your intentions.  Is the goal to attain some outer praise, avoid some inner pain or simply satisfy the need to feel validated?  If so, stop and breathe into the present moment, align yourself to what’s really important and let go of the rest.  Most of all, stay on the path that feels true to you, and only you, stepping away from fear and into the light of your true self.

I wish all of you a happy, healthy, joy filled 2014!   In keeping with the tradition of studying  yogic philosophies in the first part of the year,  for the next several weeks, we will be focusing on part of the Yoga Sutras called The Kleshas.  The Kleshas are known to be the misperceptions that keep us bound  and are often depicted as a tree that at the root of all our suffering is Avidya (spiritual ignorance) or misperception;  believing  the unreal to be the real or the impermanent to be permanent.

Avidya is the core klesha from which all the others arise.

Avidya – Ignorance

Asmita – Ego

Raga – Attachment to Pleasure

Dvesa – Aversion to Pain

Adhinivhesa – Fear of Death

Think about the Kleshas as all the misperceptions you have gathered in the course of your lifetime.  Some are born in our childhood, some we have been born into this life with.  Some are very subtle and some are very gross.  The yoga sutras tell us that if we are aware of these Kleshas at the root, and to not allow them to take hold in our psyches, we can release their power.  Together over the next few weeks, we will explore yogic tools that help us to find freedom from our Kleshas.

Yoga this Week – Regular Schedule Resumes – December 28, 2013

Yesterday is gone. Tomorrow has not yet come. We have only today. Let us begin.

Mother Theresa

Hari Om Dearest Yoga Students,

The end of the year is upon us.  It is a time of deep reflection for most.  A time to look back with compassion and illuminate  the path we have walked.  This time is a unique opportunity to reflect, accept and let go.  You have changed, you have been changed by the experiences you have traveled through and the obstacles you have been confronted with; you do not need to hold on for the past will always be part of who you are today.   The most important thing we can do is learn and let it go.  In order to live the life we are meant to live, we must make space by releasing the past.  If you find yourself holding on, bless whatever situation you are at odds with, trust that all of it was destined to happen and let yourself move forward, you will move forward non the less, so why not go with the flow of your life.  All we have is NOW…Let us begin

Classes for this Week

Monday and Thursday Evening at 730pm

Tuesday and Friday Morning at 930am

Yoga this Week – December 23, 2013

I hope you are finding time to truly feel the precious moments in your life as they pass.  As we come into this last week of the year, take time to reflect with compassion on all the places you have been.  Reflect on those things that remained the same and the things that have changed; within you and around you.   Allow yourself some quiet time to go within and connect to the silence amidst the rush of comings and goings.  Thank you to all the beautiful yogi goddesses that filled the room on Winter Solstice night!  It was so heart warming to hear all of your intentions and watch you all connect to each other as a spiritual community!!

I wish for you all a happy, healthy, joy filled holiday season!

A deep bow of gratitude from me to you, Sat Nam.
