“He [came to] realize that identifying his practice with things that could be lost [advanced postures & breath work, deep states of meditation],  would always leave him susceptible to fear anything that could be taken away through sickness aging or life circumstances was not a very wise thing to stand on.  It  was then that he realized that the only security lay in using his yoga practice to tether his awareness to the part of himself that was and is eternal.   It is in this tethering of awareness to the unchanging core of our being that true security can be gained….As our practice deepens and we gain confidence and courage,  we develop a growing appetite for this groundlessness and we start to yearn for a more liberated and open experience of ourselves and we become more willing to let go of old hand holds. We start to feel a resolute commitment to real freedom & we become vigilant about things that offer the trappings of freedom but fall short of delivering the goods”  Donna Farhi from Bringing Yoga to Life

Greetings dearest yoga students,

The above excerpt from Donna Farhi’s book is, in essence, describing what Patanjali wrote about in the Yoga Sutra’s called Kleshas.  Kleshas are basically the core confusion of what is permanent with what is impermanent and the suffering we cause ourselves when we try to hold on to the impermanent things.  We all have fear of losing things we hold dear.  It may be loved ones, our jobs, our health, our strength, our physical appearance or the myriad of ego driven personas we believe ourselves to be. Finding rest within this “groundlessness” of living with the truth of uncertainty allows us to see through false promises,  let go and live with freedom, peace and joy!

“In this lovely season when the dance of surrender is obvious, we find large spaces left where something beautiful once lived. As one by one the leaves let go, a precious emptiness appears in the trees.  The naked beauty of the branches can be seen; the birds’ abandoned nests become visible.  The new spaces of emptiness reveal mountain ridges.  At night if you stand beneath a tree and gaze upward, stars now peer through the branches.  This is an important autumn lesson—when certain things fall away, there are other things that can be seen more clearly.  The same truth can be celebrated in our personal lives”

Excerpt from “The Circle of Life” by Joyce Rupp & Macrina Wiederkehr

circle_of_life_by_lionsroar787-d6p0cmu

With the grace of a tree letting go of her leaves with all her majesty and beauty, we learn to let go, making peace with the transitions in our lives. We face the stark reality that nothing lasts forever.  Things ebb and flow, autumn teaches us to honor what is dying, changing and urges us to embrace the fact that everything is always moving and flowing into something new, even if we are standing still.  Chanting one of my favorite mantras yesterday with a group of open, like-minded people, (sa ta na ma – wha hey guru) reminded me to breathe and embrace these inevitable changes.   The circle of life, death, rebirth and infinity tells us that all endings eventually become beginnings and that the walk through the hallway from a door that has closed behind us maybe dark, maybe challenging, but always leads to yet another opening, another awakening or a new perspective.  Go outside and enjoy the spaces in the trees where now the light comes in.  Feel the sun on your face as you chant:  SA TA NA MA – WHA HEY GURU and allow your life to flow.

Yoga this Week – August 3, 2015

“Life is a series of natural and spontaneous changes. Don’t resist them; that only creates sorrow. Let reality be reality.

Let things flow naturally forward in whatever way they like.”

Lao Tzu

om on beach

Greetings dearest yoga students,

We are in the midst of changes, some that are natural like aging and children growing up.  Others are spontaneous like suddenly losing your job or winning the lottery.  We all feel anchored in what is familiar to us and are comforted in what we can count on, like an old favorite receipe or comfy chair.  However, whether we want change or not, it comes.  Sometimes slowly and sometimes like a tidal wave sweeping us off our feet.  The best we can do is “let reality be reality” and join in with the flow.  Allow yourself time to grieve the past if you need to but with all the compassion you can muster up, don’t resist change or try to control it. Allow the energy of acceptance to flow towards gratitude for all you are able to experience.  Like a beautiful flowing river, allow your life to flow and ebb and flow, using your precious energy to be a part of it all.

Greetings Dear Yoga Students,
We all know that change is inevitable, but yet we still long to cling to the known, the familiar, the comfortable.  George Harrison once said, “If we aren’t changing, we aren’t growing”.  Everything that grows must change.  It is just as important to our well being to accept and embrace change as it is to breathe.  Enjoy the moments of your day, embrace all that is in your life with enthusiasm knowing that you will never pass through this day again.  Be open to the shifting landscapes, the rise and fall of emotions, the ebb and flow of energy.  When the waves of change seem to be harsh and the seas are rough around you, remember that you are part of an amazing, vast ocean of movement through which you are inevitably being molded, changed and led in the direction of your divine destiny.

Yoga this Week – December 23, 2013

I hope you are finding time to truly feel the precious moments in your life as they pass.  As we come into this last week of the year, take time to reflect with compassion on all the places you have been.  Reflect on those things that remained the same and the things that have changed; within you and around you.   Allow yourself some quiet time to go within and connect to the silence amidst the rush of comings and goings.  Thank you to all the beautiful yogi goddesses that filled the room on Winter Solstice night!  It was so heart warming to hear all of your intentions and watch you all connect to each other as a spiritual community!!

I wish for you all a happy, healthy, joy filled holiday season!

A deep bow of gratitude from me to you, Sat Nam.
