Greetings Dearest Yoga Students,

Have faith in your practice and the ability of your yoga to calm, nurture, enliven and release.  When we move our panic energy our practice through breath work, postures, chanting, and/or meditation we effect not only our physical bodies, but our emotional bodies as well.  Moving prana (life force energy) within ourselves allows us to be more open, more willing, more free to connect to that universal prana that is available for the taking and connects us to all beings everywhere.  In essence, it allows us to show up for ourselves and for others in our life.  Trust your yoga to move through you, all you have to do is show up and be present.  Your Yoga mat will catch you if you fall.

“When experiencing this absolute true knowledge,
all previous samskaras (patterns) are left behind and new ones are prevented from sprouting”
Yoga Sutra I.50
 5987d-goddes-01

Hari Om dear yoga students,
The Sanskrit word, samskara, translates as a subconscious impression.  Samskaras are deep seeded patterns that our mind continues to play over and over again.  It is the thoughts, impressions and memories that we have acquired over our lifetimes that create conditioned responses and eventually become our habits. When we feel stuck in our lives or continue to approach situations the same way over and over again, hoping for different results, it is often due to our samskaras.   Obsessions and compulsions have their root in the samskara of past conditions, but they can also produce positive tendencies, like committing to meditate or practice yoga everyday.

As we step on our mat, do our pranayama or sit on our meditation cushion, we face ourselves from the inside.  The stillness within the movement of thoughts breaths or postures help to create space in between our impulses and actions.   The creative art of detaching from our negative patterns allows us to make those much needed changes in our lives.  However, more importantly it allows us to look at our emotional patterns more like the weather around us; we are in the weather but we are not the weather.    The weather changes but we remain the same.  This compassionate awareness reminds us of an even more important point:  That we all feel the same feelings.  The patterns you struggle with are , most likely, the same as others in your life. Ultimately, becoming aware of your own samskaras expands your circle of compassion so you can reach out to others from a place of knowing.  Yoga is all about clearing ourselves so we can go out and help others.  What we heal in ourselves, we heal in the world.

detachment

“Detachment is simply letting go of all you hold fast to in your mind. It doesn’t actually mean losing anything, simply changing your relationship with the things in your life today. The greatest pleasure for every soul comes as a result of choosing detachment. Why? Because attachment is a form of slavery that takes place in our own minds. And the result of detachment? Real freedom”

The art of detachment is the practice of showing up, doing your best and letting go of the results acknowledging the basic truth that everything in life has its perfect moment.  It is the realization that if we do not get what we want (even if it seems like the perfect job, perfect person, perfect place, perfect opportunity, etc.)  that there is probably a better time for that situation to materialize in our lives or more often than not, it may be something that is never supposed to happen at all.  When we truly are able to detach from the outcome we release the dissapointment, anger or inadaquacy we feel when things don’t turn out as we thought they should.  Thinking we will find our happiness in someone or something outside ourselves is only an atempt to gratify our senses and satisfy the ego which can never truly be satified.  Acting from a place of attachment and clinging is acting from fear.
The opposite of fear is faith.  So in contrast, the art of letting go actually allows you to access the peace of mind you seek.   We can learn to live and let live, look at closed doors as opportunities and learn trust our spiritual guides to take us where we need to be.  When we make decisions from a truly detached place; from a place of calm abiding, wisdom and love, we set the inner spirit free to move us toward all that is good, true, right and lovely in our lives.

Iyengar on yoga

 Greetings dearest yoga students,

I have gained so much from B.K.S. Iyengar’s teachings over the course of my yoga studies that my gratitude overflows for his wisdom, may he rest in peace!!  The study of yoga is a lifetime pursuit that never ends but continually grows deeper.  The teachings of yoga  stimulate my intellect and ignite my creativity as well as allowing me to persevere in  “maintaining a balanced attitude and abiding in”skillful action” the duties I must perform in my life.  I am doubly blessed to have found this amazing path and to have the honor of passing it on to all of you!

Yoga this Week – June 16, 2013 – Happy Father’s Day!

“Isn’t life grand?  With all its beauty, hardships and craziness, isn’t life itself an amazing, wild ride?”,  my big brother said as he almost squeezed the very breath out of me with his engulfing bear hug.  We laughed as we continued to compare life to a big pot of stew with all its flavors intermingling creating a delicious, hardy meal that satisfies the soul,  and wished each other well as we went on our separate ways.  The little  whisper of his wisdom stayed with me overnight into this morning.  Life IS grand, with all its twists and turns,  it is still a beautiful journey to be both respected and cherished like a ride up a scenic mountain highway; at times scary, at times exciting, at times distasteful, at times calm or breathtakingly beautiful.  Cherish your life today, cherish the fathers that are in your life as well as beyond this life.  Be present to the unique flavor of today, be compassionate, be humble, be aware of the river of awareness that runs just under the surface of things that whispers…”Isn’t Life Grand?”…

Yoga this Week – June 9, 2013 – No Thursday Night this Week

“I’ve come to believe that the highest form of prayer is to pray and yet ask for nothing.  To resonate with awareness, acceptance, and gratitude is surely to pray.  To breathe and accept gratefully the air that surrounds me into my body…..to be conscious of this, as we breath,
turns the physical practice into a devotional one”
                                            Sting

Dearest Yoga Students,

Hoping this moment finds you  consciously breathing and accepting gratefully all that surrounds you.   Whether you accept your present circumstances graciously or with a heavy heart, acceptance is the key that unlocks the door to serenity.  It is my intention that as you dive deeper and deeper into your yoga practice,  you too begin to find the spiritual foundation that yoga is built on.  Allow the feelings  of gratitude and loving kindness  that arise during your practice to become your “prayer” of devotion to  that universal energy that works through all things including you.

Sagittarius _lunar_eclipse

The Phoenix rises from the ashes of the past.  You, too, can recreate yourself and make a fresh start.  You can experience a Brilliant Breakthrough.  That is this Full Moon’s message.”

Hatha Yoga

Ha – Sun           Tha – Moon       Yoga – to connect

Hatha Yoga is to connect and balance the elements of the sun and moon that lies within us.   In the early morning hours there was a full moon lunar eclipse.  This astrological event is both mysterious and powerful.  The energy of the full moon reminds us that we are complete, whole and abundant exactly as we are.  As the full moon reflects the brillance of the sun, our energetic, powerful “Ha”, sun element shines through and lights up our receptivity “tha” moon energy.  The sun and moon are deeply connected as is illustrated as the earth moves in front of the sun and changes the color of the white moon to a dark red filtering a small amount of sunlight on its surface.  This ha and tha energy within us are deeply connected as well.

See full size image

The full moon reminds us that all that has occured within our lives in the last month has led up to this moment.  It is a time to sit back, watch, allow and let it all be.  There are times for action in our lives and a time to let go.  Within our asana practice there are times of expending great effort to release energy, wake up our bodies and quiet our minds.  There are also times when we hold the pose, release in relaxation, sit still, let go and trust the process.  This ebb and flow, giving and receiving creates the balance we so long for in our lives.  We simply cannot hold on to pleasure  or force pain to go away, try as we might, we must accept as best we can the process.  Just as the moon cannot possibly hold on to its fullness or emptiness, we must let go and allow our lives to unfold;  trusing the phases of waining, waxing and fullness to bring us to wholeness again.

Yoga this Week – March 24, 2013

The winds of grace are blowing all the time. You have only to raise your sail.
Sri Ramakrishna
Ajna Chakra – Third Eye

Purpose: Generates Intuition & Inner Wisdom

Energy: Soul

Element: Light

Location:  In between the eyebrows

Color Association: Indigo

Embraces: Self-Awareness

Spiritual Lesson: Material Detachment/Open-mindedness

Statement:  I See

Anja Chakra located in between the eyebrows is often referred to as the Third Eye. When this chakra opens it is like a gateway allowing divine wisdom to enter our minds. Like the wind it is always there waiting, all you have to do is allow it to flow.

The symbol of OM in the center of the chakra represents the unleashed energy of the Kundulini Snake rising upward. The crescent moon of feminine receptivity embraces the circle above it. This circle is a golden dot which is the essence of spiritual energy. It represents being in your center. When we chant the mantra “OM” we are embracing all of this universal divine energy, OM brings the ego self into union with the spirit self.

It’s not what you look at that matters, it’s what you see.

Henry David Thoreau

The Ajna chakra opens us up to our highest intelligence which is a distinct balance between our intellect (our thinking mind) and our intuition (our feeling mind).
When the the ego realizes that the fulfillment of its highest dreams is only to be found through merging with the Higher Self, the false masks the ego has created fall away and who you thought you were or who you thought you ought to be lose their grip.  What we see is made up of all we were told is good, bad, ugly or beautiful thoughout our life.  Our third eye opens us up to our own inner guidance which may or may not agree with all we have learned.  When the third eye opens,  you allow your true self, with all its individual thoughts and feelings, to shine forth. So Hum, ” I am what I am” There is no guilt, no need for illusion or pretense. You are totally in the present and you realize that the you you have been seeking or trying to change into something or someone else has been there,  in complete perfection,  all along.

Trust yourself. You know more than you think you do.
