Aparigraha
greedlessness, non-attachment

The yogi feels that the collection or hoarding of things implies a lack of faith in God and in himself to provide for the future….By the observance of aparigraha, the yogi makes his life as simple as possible and trains his mind not to feel the loss or the lack of anything. Then everything he really needs will come to him by itself at the proper time.”

om in the lotus

Hari Om Dear Yoga Students,

As this Fall draws us inward I wish for your eyes to see all the abundance that you already possess right now in this moment in this time in your life. One beautiful morning this past week I walked down to the shore, a little less than a mile from my house and  was embraced by the serene beauty  all around me. It caused me to stop and I experienced a moment that seemed to have transformed into one of those magical moments suspended in time. I paused, connected to my breath, did some simple yoga postures and sat on a piece of wood to silently sit in meditation.. As the rhythmic sound of the waves made their way into my mind and the gentle warm breeze caressed my skin, I felt so completely connected to all that was around me. The feeling of abundance and gratitude seemed to encapsulate my entire being. If we take even a moment to connect with all that is precious and dear to us in our lives right now, we allow the divine light to shine into our hearts. A moment like this can change your entire day from one that is ordinary to one that is full of miracles and we seem to lack nothing.

The Perfect Cup

Its time to see the flaws of myself and stop being alarmed
It’s time for me to halt my drive for perfection and to accept my blemishes

It’s time for me to receive slowly evolving growth;
the kind that comes in God’s own good time
and does not heed to my panicky pushing.

It’s time for me to embrace my humaness and love my incompleteness.
It’s time for me to cherish the unwanted,
to welcome the unknown,
to treasure the unfulfilled

If I wait untill I am perfect,
I will always be unsatified and ungrateful

If I wait until all the flaws,
chips and cracks disappear
I will be the cup that sits on the shelf and is never used
Greetings dearest yoga students,
Hope this email finds you embracing this day with all its so called “imperfections”.  The sooner we move into acceptance and embrace who we are in the moment and how our life is in the present, the sooner we will allow peace to flow within us. Think of the beauty of a tree, a landscape, an old picture or a favorite pair of worn out jeans; it is the imperfections that make them beautiful, interesting and alive.  By embracing our humaness we also acknowledge our divinity.  It is through this human experience that we come to know the sacred in life.   Do not wait, cease this day and open up to the ways in which you can be used to better the lives of those around you in any small way.  When you learn to love the imperfections in yourself, you unconciously give others the permission to accept and love themselves just as they are.  In your imperfections you are incredibly perfect and exactly who you are meant to be!

Iyengar on yoga

 Greetings dearest yoga students,

I have gained so much from B.K.S. Iyengar’s teachings over the course of my yoga studies that my gratitude overflows for his wisdom, may he rest in peace!!  The study of yoga is a lifetime pursuit that never ends but continually grows deeper.  The teachings of yoga  stimulate my intellect and ignite my creativity as well as allowing me to persevere in  “maintaining a balanced attitude and abiding in”skillful action” the duties I must perform in my life.  I am doubly blessed to have found this amazing path and to have the honor of passing it on to all of you!

Namaste dear yoga students,

What a wonderful discussion ensued around the Gift from the Sea at our book discussion at Cedar Beach Friday night.    It is amazing how yogic wisdom is weaved throughout this precious body of work.  The central themes rotating around the need for solitude and creative pursuits in order to find your inner self as well as the importance in accepting and embracing changes in relationships and within ourselves.  If you haven’t gotten a chance to read it, I would highly recommend it.  As someone said in our discussion; as soon as you open the book and begin reading, it creates a calm flow of energy inside of you, both within the imagery of the beach and the beautiful, poetic rhythm of her words.  Hoping to do another book discussion in the future.  Thank you to all who attended for the conversation, insights, laughter and connection.  Oh and special thanks to the Gift from the Sea!

“Through practice, I’ve come to see that the deepest source of my misery is not wanting things to be the way they are. Not wanting myself to be the way I am. Not wanting the world to be the way it is. Not wanting others to be the way they are. Whenever I’m suffering, I find this ‘war with reality’ to be at the heart of the problem.”

Greetings dear yoga students,

Welcome to another glorious day. As you meander through your daily round, think about something you may be “at war” with in your own life. Living life on life’s terms is not an endeavor for the faint hearted. As humans, we seem to always want to fix things or create fantasies and repeat mantras like; “if only things were different then I could be happy”. True inner contentment only comes from within. We must make the decision to be happy now. Now is all we have. This moment, this day, this family, this body, this home, this job, this stretch of 24 hours to live our life. Cultivate acceptance with whatever or whoever is in your life today. Be the one that brings serenity to your interactions and act with your heart on situations that seem to baffle you. Try and do more reflection that reaction and you may find, things are exactly as they should be. Relax, let go and focus today on being at peace with reality. The war within quiets when you cultivate Santosha – contentment; allow yourself to bloom wherever you are planted, within whatever circumstances life finds you.

“We will only discover the nature of our particular genius when we stop trying to conform to our own or other people’s models,

learn to be ourselves, and allow our natural channel to open.”

Shaki Gawain

yoga and sunrise

Svadhyaya

The fourth Niyama (or observance) in the Eight Limb Path of yoga is the study of the self.

Like so many yoga practices, svadhyaya is the process of getting to know who we really are; our true self. Yoga asana, pranayam, and meditation are all ways to peel off the layers of our false selves. Doing this and staying present to the process is not always easy. As we peel the layers and really look at our exposed wounds, memories, conditionings and patterns, we may feel more confused and defeated than when we began. Trust the process and turn again and again to those spiritual teachers that came before us. They are there to guide us; in books, in music, in our dreams, our prayers or maybe sitting right across from us at work, home or in our communities. As we work to let go of others (or even our own) ideas of who we should be, the more open and compassionate to our own “particular genius” we can become and the more our “natural channels” to the divine open and our dharma (life’s purpose) is revealed.

Yoga this Week – May 26, 2014 – Happy Memorial Day!

True heroism is remarkably sober, very undramatic.

It is not the urge to surpass all others at whatever cost,

but the urge to serve others at whatever cost.
Arthur Ashe

Greetings dear yoga students,

Hoping this email finds you enjoying a peaceful Memorial Day Holiday as we honor those that have fought in service to our country. If we allow service to be at the center of our lives; in our work, families and communities, our lives will have true meaning and our dharma (one’s righteous duty or virtuous path) will surely be fulfilled.

hanuman

Hanuman – The Monkey God

Hanuman is known as a powerful example of true devotion and service.  He is worshiped as a symbol of physical strength, fierce perseverance and devotion.  In the epic tale of the Ramayana he overcomes ordeals, obstacles and fear enabling him to perform supernatural feats  in order to save his master, Rama’s wife, Sita; all in the honor of service.

Become aware of where or who you are meant to serve in this lifetime, connect to your dharma.  Life is fleeting, our greatest accomplishments are those of the heart  , so put your energy into serving your fellow human being and although it may not be dramatic, rest assured it is true heroism in its purist form

“What we are trying to do in yoga is to create a union, and so to deepen a yoga pose is to actually increase the union of the pose, not necessarily put your leg around your head.”

Rodney Yee

Each time we come to our mats, we have a chance to explore interconnectedness. We begin with our breath and move into our bodies, but it doesn’t stop there. As we create union with a pose, we adjust, consider, explore, become present and breathe into the experience. We soften into the edges of the pose and watch them dissolve as we flow moment to moment. Much the same way we can choose to unite and connect with the situations and interactions in our life. We can choose to lean in, yield and be present, to connect and unite with everything inside and around us with curiosity instead of expectations. As you move into this day, feel into the energy around you. Connect with the elements of nature. Let the sun, earth and sky serenade you as you flow guided by that wonderful teacher that resides within you. Rather than judge your day by how much you accomplish, see or do, choose to unite, connect and deepen into the mystery that is your life.

Dearest Yoga students,
Be diligent to keep yourself pure.  Pure in thought, word, action and intention in every moment.  Look inside, get quiet whenever you can.  Create practices that allow you to go deep within and clear yourself of built up toxins in body and mind.  Focus on the energy and intention you bring to your daily round.  The outcome of whatever we do is always the sum of how we approach the task.  “If we take care to honor and care for the roots of the tree, the branches and leaves take care of themselves”.  Clear your energy, align with your highest intelligence and watch your day unfold and flow with the grace that is inherent in our divine destiny.

“In the confrontation between the stream and the rock, the stream always wins – not through strength, but through persistence”

                                   ~Buddha

buddha by river

Hari Om Dearest Yoga Students,

Hoping this message finds you enjoying the first signs of the new season that surely awaits us.   Think about the perseverance and patience that nature is gifted with.  The small bulbs that wait silently underground, the perennials that lay dormant waiting for the cues that it is time to begin their work of opening, pushing, growing up out of the dark earth into the light.  Nature does not give up, it finds a way to regenerate.  The natural world knows what needs to be done and does not question its role in its lifetime.  Experiencing the persistent and reliable cycles of nature  fills me with hope,  joy and faith that we too can rise above our difficult, dormant or hard times and shine in all our glory when the time is right.

It doesn’t just take talent, intellect or luck for great people to do great things;  Most often, it is simply the persistence and perseverance of doing the next right thing, showing up  and suiting up, waiting patiently when we have exhausted our efforts, or getting on the yoga mat in spite of ourselves.    We too must learn the lesson of  persistence as we confront situations in our lives where we are either forced to wait or forced to gather all our faith to keep hanging on day in and day out, dangling on the edge of vulnerability.   We are all capable of greatness in our own unique way.

sunflower om

The Yoga Sutras tell us is it the obstacles that lead us into a deeper understanding of ourselves which in turn allows to become deeply connected to others as well as the divine force that flows in and out of everything.  Directly confronting our difficulties with clarity, compassion and persistence creates freedom.  Freedom in knowing you are never really trapped in any situation.  For today, see if you can change your perspective to any “rocks” that are in your stream.  Stay focused, do the next right thing, however small it may seem, and try and find the lesson, the jewel that is hidden within.  Today, be persistent in your journey towards balance, freedom, peace and serenity.  Flow within the river of your life, patient, strong and free.
