Yoga this Week – October 15, 2014

**No Monday Night Class this week – Make sure you scroll down for some wonderful offerings this month!**

“Again and again ~ Return like Mountain ~ Release like Ocean ~ Relax like Sky ~And Rest ~ Rest in the Heart of Pure Awareness” Living Buddha

yoga green tree

Greetings dear yoga students,

This quote reminds me that there is a need for us to keep coming back again and again to rest in our true selves. However, to balance our energies we must seek different modalities to meet our ever changing needs; sometimes we need to relax like the sky,  be still like a  mountain or release the past  like the ocean.  Tune in to exactly what you may be needing today.  Draw upon the power of nature to nurture you and give you what you need.  As the season transitions to shorter days and longer nights, you may feel your energy, mood and mind shifting so try and adjust your daily round to help you be true to yourself.  In this way we begin to live in the natural rhythms of nature, returning again to rest in the awareness of the heart and what truly matters in your life.

Bring yourself into perfect balance this fall season

With

Yoga and Ayurveda

Tuesday, October 21st at 9:30 to 1115am

The transition into fall can aggravate Vata – our air element. Autumn itself is a Vata season characterized by dry, windy, and cool weather.  The best way to balance this energy is through yogic and ayurvedic practices that are grounding and nourishing.  Restoring our connection to the earth and to ourselves at a deeper level will balance Vata and keep us from feeling frazzled.

Join Kishori Gopika (Kim Williams) to learn how to harmonize with the fall season and harness this powerful energy of Vata available to us for self transformation.

Kishori will teach a Vata balancing yoga class focusing around centering the body and calming the nervous system. The class will be followed by guidance on how to stay healthy throughout the fall season through Vata balancing lifestyle, dietary recommendations and self-care practices.

Kishori Gopika is an Ayurvedic Practitioner and Yoga Instructor who has been studying and practicing in India for the last ten years.

Regular Class Fees Apply with an additional $10 fee for Guest Teacher

“Mother Ganges teaches us that if we want to attain the sea of our aspiration, we must persevere in our goal and never be discouraged by the inevitable obstacles that come on our path. All impediments are like rocks in the river of life. We should flow around them and never give up. With the Lord’s help, there is always a way.”

Excerpt from “The Journey Home” by Radhanath Swami

Dearest Yoga Students,

One of my favorite teachers, Rolf Gates used to say, “The obstacles in our path, are our path”, and I believe this to be true.  Yoga is about relationship and connection. Today explore your relationship to the rocks in the river of your life.  How you think about your obstacles  and the energy you bring to your actions as you relate to them, has everything to do how you “flow around them”.  Today as my husband and I literally got lost in the trails in the woods, we reminded each other (in between glares of confusion) to enjoy the journey of being lost.  As the sound of the road became louder and we knew we were almost back, I contemplated the fact that we are never really lost, we are never really off the path and that the detours, obstacles and the “not knowing” are usually the most beautiful parts of our journey.  So persevere today and avoid becoming discouraged.  With the help of the divine source that is vibrating all around us, there is always a way.

So Much Happiness

It is difficult to know what to do with so much happiness.
With sadness there is something to rub against,
A wound to tend with lotion and cloth.
When the world falls in around you, you have pieces to pick up,
Something to hold in your hands, like ticket stubs or change.

But happiness floats.
It doesn’t need you to hold it down.
It doesn’t need anything.
Happiness lands on the roof of the next house, singing,
And disappears when it wants to.
You are happy either way.
Even the fact that you once lived in a peaceful tree house
And now live over a quarry of noise and dust
Cannot make you unhappy.
Everything has a life of its own,
It too could wake up filled with possibilities
Of coffee cake and ripe peaches,
And love even the floor which needs to be swept,
The soiled linens and scratched records….

Since there is no place large enough
To contain so much happiness,
You shrug, you raise your hands, and it flows out of you
Into everything you touch. You are not responsible.
You take no credit, as the night sky takes no credit
For the moon, but continues to hold it, and to share it,
And in that way, be known.

~ Naomi Shihab Nye ~

One of yoga’s most beautiful niyamas (ethical practices to cultivate) is Santosha or Contentment.    With Santosha, there is less doing and more a sitting with, a being present for, a quiet contemplation to look around and be content in the moment, in this very moment.  Today notice how many times you might sabotage your contentment.  Sometimes we worry that things are too good, that it won’t last.  Sometimes we think we should do more, be more or get more.   Be aware of when you feel content today  and allow yourself the joy and peace that cultivating santosha brings, however fleeting or far between,

The Perfect Cup

Its time to see the flaws of myself and stop being alarmed
It’s time for me to halt my drive for perfection and to accept my blemishes

It’s time for me to receive slowly evolving growth;
the kind that comes in God’s own good time
and does not heed to my panicky pushing.

It’s time for me to embrace my humaness and love my incompleteness.
It’s time for me to cherish the unwanted,
to welcome the unknown,
to treasure the unfulfilled

If I wait untill I am perfect,
I will always be unsatified and ungrateful

If I wait until all the flaws,
chips and cracks disappear
I will be the cup that sits on the shelf and is never used
Greetings dearest yoga students,
Hope this email finds you embracing this day with all its so called “imperfections”.  The sooner we move into acceptance and embrace who we are in the moment and how our life is in the present, the sooner we will allow peace to flow within us. Think of the beauty of a tree, a landscape, an old picture or a favorite pair of worn out jeans; it is the imperfections that make them beautiful, interesting and alive.  By embracing our humaness we also acknowledge our divinity.  It is through this human experience that we come to know the sacred in life.   Do not wait, cease this day and open up to the ways in which you can be used to better the lives of those around you in any small way.  When you learn to love the imperfections in yourself, you unconciously give others the permission to accept and love themselves just as they are.  In your imperfections you are incredibly perfect and exactly who you are meant to be!

detachment

“Detachment is simply letting go of all you hold fast to in your mind. It doesn’t actually mean losing anything, simply changing your relationship with the things in your life today. The greatest pleasure for every soul comes as a result of choosing detachment. Why? Because attachment is a form of slavery that takes place in our own minds. And the result of detachment? Real freedom”

The art of detachment is the practice of showing up, doing your best and letting go of the results acknowledging the basic truth that everything in life has its perfect moment.  It is the realization that if we do not get what we want (even if it seems like the perfect job, perfect person, perfect place, perfect opportunity, etc.)  that there is probably a better time for that situation to materialize in our lives or more often than not, it may be something that is never supposed to happen at all.  When we truly are able to detach from the outcome we release the dissapointment, anger or inadaquacy we feel when things don’t turn out as we thought they should.  Thinking we will find our happiness in someone or something outside ourselves is only an atempt to gratify our senses and satisfy the ego which can never truly be satified.  Acting from a place of attachment and clinging is acting from fear.
The opposite of fear is faith.  So in contrast, the art of letting go actually allows you to access the peace of mind you seek.   We can learn to live and let live, look at closed doors as opportunities and learn trust our spiritual guides to take us where we need to be.  When we make decisions from a truly detached place; from a place of calm abiding, wisdom and love, we set the inner spirit free to move us toward all that is good, true, right and lovely in our lives.

“For fast-acting relief try slowing down.”
Lily Tomlin

Greetings Dear Yoga Students,
Hoping this email finds you enjoying this glorious, gift that is today.  The above quote from Lily Tomlin reminds us not only to slow down the pace of life but also how such a simple thing of just slowing down can easily relieve the pressure and pain we sometimes inflict upon ourselves in the heat of a hurried moment.  Next time you feel harried or stressed, try literally slowing down your movements; walk slower, breathe slower, talk with pauses in between your words and then notice how the mind and body react.  Chances are you will feel immediate relief and possibly some serenity as well.  “Be the change you wish to see in the world” as Ghandi so elequently states.

Iyengar on yoga

 Greetings dearest yoga students,

I have gained so much from B.K.S. Iyengar’s teachings over the course of my yoga studies that my gratitude overflows for his wisdom, may he rest in peace!!  The study of yoga is a lifetime pursuit that never ends but continually grows deeper.  The teachings of yoga  stimulate my intellect and ignite my creativity as well as allowing me to persevere in  “maintaining a balanced attitude and abiding in”skillful action” the duties I must perform in my life.  I am doubly blessed to have found this amazing path and to have the honor of passing it on to all of you!
