“Avoid greed in your life and you will vibrate harmoniously with this attribute of Aparigraha.   Treat others with respect and be generous with your time and attention. Remember, if you want love, freely give love away”Image result for aparigraha
Aparigraha is learning to let go and release our grip (without claw marks) when we are hoarding or attaching to someone or something out of fear.  It’s learning to  be patient with empty spaces without the need to fill them. Enjoy these last few weeks of being indoors;  Aparigraha’s lesson is to simply be satisfied; freeing ourselves from the belief that  impermanent things, transient comfort, momentary validation and perceived control are things that will make us happy.   Aparigraha  means developing a strong confidence and devotion not to this world but to the Higher intelligence that permeates and interconnects our lives when we choose to act from a place of  selflessness, generosity  and love.

Shanti,

Amy

Yoga this Week – February 1, 2021 – Imbolc Virtual Gathering this Saturday

“Nothing is ever lost as time passes, it merely metamorphoses into something as wonderful or, in some cases, into something even better than before.”
― Carole Carlton

The time of transition begins tomorrow, February 2nd is known as Imbolc, (or Groundhog Day) that marks the halfway point between Winter Solstice and Spring Equinox.  We are still in the depths of Winter so if you haven’t yet gotten enough rest or inner nurturing, the time is now.  Embrace the dark days as you celebrate the increasing light.  Light candles or a fire.  Take a hot bath or cuddle up with a good book (I’m currently reading Cicely Tyson’s Book, “Just as I am” wonderful!)  With the snow storm upon us, relish this season of ice, snow and inward gazing knowing that all things pass, transform, metamorphoses into something new to experience.  This winter is slowly passing and we will emerge stronger, wiser and ready to rise up out of the dark…together!

**No Wednesday Walk this Week**

“The light pours into the world like sunlight into a garden of growing things. But this garden, beloved ones, is the garden of your hearts. And your hearts make a conscious choice of how much light they want to use, how much light they are ready to consume, how much light, you as a Spiritual Being can amplify and send forth. These decisions, this impetus changes the world dramatically. And it is changing right now.”

Namaste Dear Ones,

Stop right now.  Take a long slow breath in and as you breathe out relax your muscles, let go of your thoughts for a moment and feel how tender the breath touches you.  Tune in and feel the earth grounding you and the sky expanding you.  Find the present moment.  It is a moment that will never be again.  It is timeless and formless but nevertheless sacred.  One breath can bring you back.  Try it.  Find out for yourself, I’m sure you won’t be disappointed.  Hope to see you in class this week as we carry on the practice of becoming grounded in the present again and again and again.

Yoga is the science of truth and freedom.  When we quiet our bodies and our minds, we find the the present moment.  In that present moment awareness, the you and I, the us and them,  and the judgment drops away leaving clarity through which we can merge with our higher self,  the atman; divine source of life.  As our spiritual quest deepens we don’t move away from the self that has always been but we uncover the self that is motivated by a higher purpose.   Instead of fickle thoughts that move from one self centered desire to another we in essence become self-less. Simply practice, watch as judgments and self-centered thoughts arise and create feelings of separateness and anxiety.  Simply observe without attachment and they will lose their power.  Feel into the bliss of the present moment in your body and your mind.  Chitta Vritti Nirodhah will surely follow.

home: ' FLANEURING ' …...

Happy, Healthy, Safe and Peaceful 2021 to my dear Yoga Students,

Meandering around my house this morning, quite frankly, feeling a bit down, trapped, bored (you get the idea), I reached for my phone and searched our local library database for some inspiration.  I came across a book called The Art of Flaneuring:  How to Wonder with Intention and Discover a Better Life by Erika Owen.  It made so much sense to me since, I realized, I have always been a sort of Flaneur without really knowing it or without the intention to be one.  I immediately knew this was no coincidence.  I got myself dressed and out the door knowing the incoming prediction of rain would dampen this adventure.

I found myself in Port Jefferson and allowed my dog, Sonny, to take the lead.  After all, a curious dog is by nature a Flaneur.  Even though I have walked through Port Jeff a million times, I found myself stopping and really seeing the old houses,  the brick and stone walls,  curves in the street;  I was really seeing it for the first time.  As sonny stopped numerous times to explore a particularly intoxicating scent, I greeted fellow walkers, gazed inside store fronts, read menus, considered the slants of hills and streets and ended up at the Farmer’s Market (a great place for Flaneuring).   My boredom lifted, my mind quieted and my gratitude and joy became the center of my thoughts.

It is with this intention, I plan to walk into the new decade.  Without expectation, enjoying the scenery, allowing my intuition  and viveka (Discernment) to lead the way and take time for Flaneuring outdoors every day if possible.  The art of  wandering without a definitive destination is to purposely explore your surroundings with curiosity without expectation  in much the same way I encourage you to be in your yoga practice; curious, attentive, detail oriented with a willingness to be pleasantly surprised at what you find.

As always, thank you so very much for allowing me to bring yoga and meditation into your lives!  May peace and joy follow (or lead) you into 2021, may you find the time on purpose just to be and explore wherever life takes you.  Looking forward to seeing you on the screen or possibly for a group Flaneuring outing real soon.  Stay tuned for details coming forth for a Imbolc Virtual Retreat ! Yoga this Week – December 27, 2020

*Please note there is no Chair Class Monday Morning as well as no Yoga Class Friday Morning.

Below is a prayer we have read many times as a group at our Winter Solstice Gatherings.  I hope you enjoy it and know that I am so thankful for all of you.  It has been quite a  year for us all.  There have been many hardships, adjustments, strange new ways of doing things but also there has been much beauty in seeing selfless people doing such amazing outreach,  the connections we treasure have grown even more precious, and the littlest things bring up profound gratitude.   Loss and struggle certainly tell us a lot about ourselves and others, may we be gentle and loving and we observe our thoughts and actions.  I hope this new year brings us all some peace and light and courage to trust that grace has our back.  Happy and Blessed 2021 to you and yours and all of us!

A Prayer of Gratitude for the New Year

Thank you Creator for the life you have given me. Thank you for giving me everything that I have ever truly needed. Thank you for the opportunity to experience this beautiful body and this wonderful mind. Thank you for living inside me with all your love, with your pure and boundless spirit, with your warm and radiant light.

Thank you for using my words, for using my eyes, for using my heart to share your love wherever I go. I love you just the way you are, and because I am your creation, I love myself just the way I am. Help me to keep the love and the peace in my heart and to make that love a new way of life, that I may live in love the rest of my life. Amen

Namaste

Much Love

Amy

Yoga this Week-12-20-20 & Winter Solstice Gathering tomorrow night!

Together

We call down grace,

and gaze without wavering into the fires of creation

We find the place where

Love embraces fear and tears taste like faith

We let our radiance be revealed in laughter and in longing

We hold the whole of life, sweet grapes and bitter, healing herbs

We hold until we overflow

and offer back the gifts that we’ve received

The vessel never empties.

The growing love between us keeps it filled

Donna Faulds

Here we are nearing the wonderful Winter Solstice.   As I was adding the photos to the slide show I plan to show at our Virtual Gathering on Monday Evening, I am struck by the connections, both new, old and lost that we have made during these 13 years of practicing together.  I honor all you are, the light and dark, the courageous and vulnerable, the strength and the weak.  You add so much color and spark to my life.  It’s simply to hard to express what you all have meant to me!  As the above poem states so beautifully, our Kula, our Community of the Heart never empties for it is the growing love between us that keeps it filled!  I truly hope you can come to our virtual gathering this coming Monday (link & details below) and garner strength, healing and light together as we call down grace and welcome the turning of the Seasons.

“I define connection as the energy that exists between people when they feel seen, heard, and valued; when they can give and receive without judgment; and when they derive sustenance and strength from the relationship.”

                                   Brene Brown

Connection.  Interdependence.  Strength.  Love.  Acceptance. Understanding…..These are the things that sustain our human relationships.  It has never been more clear to me how vital my relationships are to the quality of my life.  When we feel seen, heard and valued we receive energy that gives us strength and courage to carry on.  Offering this gift of truly valuing another, creates  a synergistic energy that cannot be explained with words but must be felt with the heart.    In the midst of our yoga practice our we create an energy/synergy within ourselves.  We are saying “body, mind, spirit, I see you, I hear you and I value you” and this truly is yoga; to unite all of ourselves to “derive sustenance and strength from the relationship”
