Yoga This Week – March 1, 2015

“When experiencing this absolute true knowledge,
all previous samskaras (patterns) are left behind and new ones are prevented from sprouting”
Yoga Sutra I.50
 5987d-goddes-01

Hari Om dear yoga students,
The Sanskrit word, samskara, translates as a subconscious impression.  Samskaras are deep seeded patterns that our mind continues to play over and over again.  It is the thoughts, impressions and memories that we have acquired over our lifetimes that create conditioned responses and eventually become our habits. When we feel stuck in our lives or continue to approach situations the same way over and over again, hoping for different results, it is often due to our samskaras.   Obsessions and compulsions have their root in the samskara of past conditions, but they can also produce positive tendencies, like committing to meditate or practice yoga everyday.

As we step on our mat, do our pranayama or sit on our meditation cushion, we face ourselves from the inside.  The stillness within the movement of thoughts breaths or postures help to create space in between our impulses and actions.   The creative art of detaching from our negative patterns allows us to make those much needed changes in our lives.  However, more importantly it allows us to look at our emotional patterns more like the weather around us; we are in the weather but we are not the weather.    The weather changes but we remain the same.  This compassionate awareness reminds us of an even more important point:  That we all feel the same feelings.  The patterns you struggle with are , most likely, the same as others in your life. Ultimately, becoming aware of your own samskaras expands your circle of compassion so you can reach out to others from a place of knowing.  Yoga is all about clearing ourselves so we can go out and help others.  What we heal in ourselves, we heal in the world.

Lao Tzu
The heart chakra is your most vulnerable place.  When we are hurt in life or love, our first instinct is to build protective walls around ourselves in fear of being hurt again.  These walls, however, only cut us off from the very energy we long for which begins with self-love.  In order to receive or express true compassion and unconditional love, we must first open our heart to ourselves.  Then this beautiful, abundance energy can flow freely, just as the physical heart pumps life giving blood throughout our system, and then receives it back again; the infinite source of compassion, forgiveness and joy that is stored in the recesses of our heart can radiate throughout our lives,  flowing within us, to those around us and then back again.  The  Anahata Chakra holds the ultimate, most powerful healing energy there is on earth and beyond:  Love, Compassion, Forgiveness, Kindness and Joy.

Saturday Morning, March 7th at 8:45  to 10:30am Workshop with Kim Williams (Kishori)

Prana, Teja and Ojas: Vital Essences of Transformation

Yoga is an inner alchemical process through which we can develop higher consciousness. We each have the capacity within us to go beyond ordinary human awareness to reach a state of Self-realization.   Prana, Tejas, and Ojas  support health, creativity and well-being. They provide the foundation for deeper yogic and meditational practices.   We will especially focus on how to cultivate Ojas as that is the foundation on which our yoga practice rests. It is responsible for our immunity and on a deeper level, our sense of well-being or our bliss body. Ojas is directly linked with the essence of divine love within and can be cultivated through bhakti yoga and a lifestyle full of wholesome pleasures.

Blessed are the flexible, for they shall not be bent out of shape.

Author Unknown

Greetings dearest yoga students,

How many times do we find ourselves “bent out of shape” when things don’t go quite the way we had planned.  Wouldn’t it be wonderful to be flexible enough to flow moment to moment in our life adjusting instead of reacting to the situations that occur?  Think about how much more peaceful life would be.  Sometimes all it takes is a step back, a moment or more of reflection to think about our part in the situation and to shift our focus on a solution instead of bringing all of our energies into the problem.  This does not mean allowing our personal boundaries to be crossed or negative behavior to continue in or around us.  It means taking a step back and being flexible enough, open enough to see the reality of what is happening.  To focus our desire on the truth and see where we can adjust and make changes so that we contribute to the solution.  Perhaps in some situations flexibility is simply moving towards acceptance of what we cannot change with compassion and love for all those involved, including ourselves.

What if the only New Years Resolution we had was to simply love ourselves More?

No Class this Monday Evening – Happy Martin Luther King, Jr. Day!

The hope of a secure and livable world lies with disciplined nonconformists who are dedicated to justice, peace and brotherhood.

Greetings dear yoga students,

Hoping this email finds you well and enjoying the receptive energy of this winter season.  I love the term “disciplined nonconformists” that MLK so eloquently states are the “Hope of a secure and livable world”.      A life of discipline (Tapas in yogic terms) affords us the freedom to operate from our higher selves, confident even when we are going against cultural norms. When we hear our inner calling, it takes persistence and faith to have the courage to follow through with what we hear, even if those around us might raise an eyebrow or fear we are going in the wrong direction.  Be still, listen, be disciplined in your practices of ethical living in body, mind and spirit,  which is what yoga practice is all about.  Yoga is to become pure in all facets of our lives so we can act from that place of calm abiding, wisdom and love.  Yoga literally means to yoke, to be self controlled, to be disciplined so we can be the ones that  dare to step out into the light;  for the hope of a secure and livable world lies within us.

” The Past and the Future is a joke to me now. I see that they’re nothin’. I see they ain’t here. The only thing that’s here is you and me…..I love you. Not, not like they told you love is….[the story books are bull],  love don’t make things nice, it ruins everything! It breaks your heart, it makes things a mess. We, we aren’t here to make things perfect. Snowflakes are perfect, stars are perfect. Not us! Not us!”
 Ronny Cammareri, “Moonstruck”

  download (10)

The above quote is one of my all time favorite movie lines.  We are not here to be perfect, for our lives to look flawless, to create what society’s idea of a beautiful life is.    We are here to have our hearts broken a thousand times because we are meant to experience the oceans of emotions our life is full of.  We are here to experience the wonder of being human; with all its hills and valleys,  like the moon we continually cycle through a myriad of phases to become whole again.  As we near the end of another year, embrace this truth:   That loving, and being truly vulnerable in your life doesn’t always look nice and that truly living wholeheartedly means taking the risk that sometimes your heart will break; sometimes you will make a  mess.

Our Yoga practice helps us remember that we are perfect just the way we are and that our lives our beautiful as they are.   Within our practice we may fall down,  sweat,  and sometimes struggle just to bear the truth of our bodies and minds but when  we get back up again and   return to our mats, “We breath and something in us softens, makes space for the imperfections”.  So let go of the storybook idea of how your life should look.  Let go and enjoy the scenery of  today.  Be vulnerable, be open, allow grief, joy, success and failure, falling down and getting back up to all be part of the great tapestry that is your life.  When you reach into the beauty of imperfection;   the crooked tree, the moon’s craters,  the clouded sky, tears in a loved one’s eyes, experience it fully, turning away from nothing that you find.  The messes will be there,  the heartaches will surface, the past and future are but memories and dreams, breathe it all in and find your joy in being present through it all for yourself and those around you.

Come and clear body, mind and spirit with an all levels detox flow including a guided chakra meditation and yoga nidra.

We all tend to indulge in rich foods around the holidays but detoxing is more than just physical.  We also may experience emotional heaviness, grief, elation followed by sadness or just plain exhaustion with a sense of being out of balance!

Class will begin with asana infused with flowing,  twisting, forward bending, and kriyas (cleansing practices) for the body, followed by a chakra clearing meditation for emotional grounding and ending with deep yogic relaxation to enliven the spirit.

Please reserve your spot as soon as possible for this special Saturday morning class.  We need at least four students to sign up for class to run.

**Special Note:  Please try not to eat anything heavy for at least 2 hours prior to class as we will be doing cleansing kriyas, pranayama and twisting.

Greetings Dear Yoga Students,
We all know that change is inevitable, but yet we still long to cling to the known, the familiar, the comfortable.  George Harrison once said, “If we aren’t changing, we aren’t growing”.  Everything that grows must change.  It is just as important to our well being to accept and embrace change as it is to breathe.  Enjoy the moments of your day, embrace all that is in your life with enthusiasm knowing that you will never pass through this day again.  Be open to the shifting landscapes, the rise and fall of emotions, the ebb and flow of energy.  When the waves of change seem to be harsh and the seas are rough around you, remember that you are part of an amazing, vast ocean of movement through which you are inevitably being molded, changed and led in the direction of your divine destiny.
