Yoga this Week – September 22, 2013 – Thurs Nite Class 6pm this week only

“Strength does not come from physical capacity.  It comes from an indomitable will.”
―     Mahatma Gandhi

Greetings Dear Yoga Students,

Welcome to Fall!!

We had such a wonderful time yesterday gliding across the Harbor to our sweet little island nestled in between Setauket Harbor and the Long Island Sound.  The air was warm, the sun was playing peek a boo and hearts were connected.  Taking our yoga out into nature is so invigorating and transformative.  We are connected, like the Global Mala that took place yesterday connecting yoga communities all over the world, to nature in all its forms.  We learned an important lesson during our paddle as well;  That nature is not to be taken for granted in any capacity.  The wind and waves were kicking up on our way back and we had to use our Kali Power to get us home.  It was exhilarating, at times difficult,  but worth every effort.  Our journey across the water reminded me that sometimes the way is easy and we can glide carefree through the waters of our life, however, it is in the times when we must paddle into the wind, against the flow, or into great resistance that we find the true sense of power that lies within us at all times.    Special thanks to Debbi and Bob, for keeping our kayaking crew safe and accounted for.  Jai, Jai, Jai!!  Victory!

You are one thing only. You are a Divine Being. An all-powerful Creator. You are a Deity in jeans and a t-shirt, and within you dwells the infinite wisdom of the ages and the sacred creative force of All that is, will be and ever was.”

True happiness comes from the joy of deeds well done, the zest of creating things new!

 Antoine de Saint-Exupery

Greetings dear yoga students,

One of my beloved teachers, Rolf Gates, once said to us, “Don’t allow your duties to become your burdens”.  This saying has always stuck with me.  Within the daily round of doing, taking care of, maintaining and getting things done, we can sometimes feel very burdened.  While completing our yearly ritual today of making and jarring up our tomato sauce, this quote hovered over me like the fine sunshine that was streaming down from the sky.  “Don’t allow your duties to become your burdens”.  The hard work we put in today pleasures us all year long; when we open a jar in mid-winter, when we give some to someone having hard times or when we simply share a meal with family and friends.  Doing something once a year creates a specialness, an excitement and my husband and I usually feel a “zest in creating” it (until right about now, when we are ready to collapse).  But, it is in our daily duties that we also need to find that joy for a job well done  .  Whatever your  duties consist of this week, try to look at them with a fresh attitude.  If your duties are really become your burdens, try to change the way you do them, creating an atmosphere that promotes happiness or give yourself a special reward for completing the task.  If your duties still seem heavy to carry, simply look back at the end of the week and find true happiness knowing your deeds were well done to the best of your ability with an intention of love and service for all.

The reward of a thing well done, is having done it.

“Amazing isn’t it how some people see the basket half empty and others see it half full.  Some see life hopeless; others hopeful.  Even when things are less than perfect, if you can think of the good, the beautiful, the hopeful, you’ll be more than sustained–you’ll conquer
 –
 Greetings dear. beautiful yoga students,
 –
Remind yourself today that negative thinking will never be productive.  When you find your mind turning to those dark places, take control and change your perspective on whatever situation is baffling you at the time.  Think upon whatever is true, beautiful and right about what surrounds you.  Experiment with this and put it into practice in small ways.  If your day is going less than perfect, re-frame it in your mind.  Our minds have the power to create and bring into fruition whatever it rests upon.  Allow your mind to rest upon what it truly wonderful in your life right now….put it into practice and try to enjoy being a learner.  You may just find that by focusing on the positive,  the peace and joy of the divine spirit that lives in all things will be close at hand supporting, and guiding your day.

Only as a spiritual warrior can one withstand the path of knowledge. A warrior cannot complain or regret anything. His life is an endless challenge and challenges cannot possibly be good or bad. Challenges are simply challenges. The basic difference between an ordinary man and a warrior is that a warrior takes everything as a challenge, while an ordinary man takes everythingas a blessing or a curse. – Don Juan

Yoga this Week – July 7, 2013

Yoga this Week - February 25, 2012

When you do yoga postures,
surrender to the moment,
be in the moment,
don`t worry about weather
you can touch your
toes or not,
just experience the process.

Then try to carry this attitude
into the rest of your day,
away from tension,
guilt and anxiety.

Experience is the door
to the here and now.

                    Amrit Kala

 Hari Om dearest yoga students,

Non-attachment is one of the most difficult aspects of our practice to attain.  We attach ourselves to an ideal of what our life should look like, what our yoga practice should feel like, what our world should be like and then only create suffering when it does not measure up.  To truly be in the process, present to the here and now is a gift.   When we walk through that doorway, we feel the guilt, shame and anxiety, which have become like guests who have overstayed their welcome, slip away.  We all deserve to be free, we all deserve to experience joy and true joy and freedom is only found in one place:  the here and now…

If you plan on joining in for Beach Yoga, we will meet at my house and carpool down to Hallock Landing Beach  – Check Email or FB Page by 5pm to see if class will be on the beach or in our yoga room.  If you decide to drive down on your own, please be mindful of the “No Parking” Signs.  Contact me if you have any questions.  I hope to continue this beautiful tradition of taking our yoga outdoors and I appreciate your patience as we work out the details.  I promise you, it is worth it!!!

Yoga this Week – June 9, 2013 – No Thursday Night this Week

“I’ve come to believe that the highest form of prayer is to pray and yet ask for nothing.  To resonate with awareness, acceptance, and gratitude is surely to pray.  To breathe and accept gratefully the air that surrounds me into my body…..to be conscious of this, as we breath,
turns the physical practice into a devotional one”
                                            Sting

Dearest Yoga Students,

Hoping this moment finds you  consciously breathing and accepting gratefully all that surrounds you.   Whether you accept your present circumstances graciously or with a heavy heart, acceptance is the key that unlocks the door to serenity.  It is my intention that as you dive deeper and deeper into your yoga practice,  you too begin to find the spiritual foundation that yoga is built on.  Allow the feelings  of gratitude and loving kindness  that arise during your practice to become your “prayer” of devotion to  that universal energy that works through all things including you.

Yoga this Week – March 24, 2013

The winds of grace are blowing all the time. You have only to raise your sail.
Sri Ramakrishna
Ajna Chakra – Third Eye

Purpose: Generates Intuition & Inner Wisdom

Energy: Soul

Element: Light

Location:  In between the eyebrows

Color Association: Indigo

Embraces: Self-Awareness

Spiritual Lesson: Material Detachment/Open-mindedness

Statement:  I See

Anja Chakra located in between the eyebrows is often referred to as the Third Eye. When this chakra opens it is like a gateway allowing divine wisdom to enter our minds. Like the wind it is always there waiting, all you have to do is allow it to flow.

The symbol of OM in the center of the chakra represents the unleashed energy of the Kundulini Snake rising upward. The crescent moon of feminine receptivity embraces the circle above it. This circle is a golden dot which is the essence of spiritual energy. It represents being in your center. When we chant the mantra “OM” we are embracing all of this universal divine energy, OM brings the ego self into union with the spirit self.

It’s not what you look at that matters, it’s what you see.

Henry David Thoreau

The Ajna chakra opens us up to our highest intelligence which is a distinct balance between our intellect (our thinking mind) and our intuition (our feeling mind).
When the the ego realizes that the fulfillment of its highest dreams is only to be found through merging with the Higher Self, the false masks the ego has created fall away and who you thought you were or who you thought you ought to be lose their grip.  What we see is made up of all we were told is good, bad, ugly or beautiful thoughout our life.  Our third eye opens us up to our own inner guidance which may or may not agree with all we have learned.  When the third eye opens,  you allow your true self, with all its individual thoughts and feelings, to shine forth. So Hum, ” I am what I am” There is no guilt, no need for illusion or pretense. You are totally in the present and you realize that the you you have been seeking or trying to change into something or someone else has been there,  in complete perfection,  all along.

Trust yourself. You know more than you think you do.

Yoga this Week – March 10, 2013

The best and most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or even touched – they must be felt with the heart.

Helen Keller

The Anahata Chakra – Heart Center

Location – Center of the chest (heart), love Color – Green   Element – Air

Energy – Consciousness Sense – Touch    Mantra – YAM Statement – “I want to give and receive love”

Functions – Anchors the life-force from the Higher Self. Energizes the blood and physical body with the life-force, blood circulation

Glands/Organs – Heart, thymus glad, circulatory system, arms, hands, lungs

Qualities – Divine/unconditional love, forgiveness, compassion, understanding, balance, group consciousness, oneness with life, acceptance, peace, openness, harmony, contentment

Negative Qualities – Repression of love, emotional instability, out of balance, heart problems, circulation problems

“Love is not something that is attached to an object. Love is a state of being in harmony with oneself”
Anodea Judith
Greetings dearest Yoga Students,
The Anahata Chakra is the point of transition between the lower grounding, earthly chakras to the higher, more spiritually based chakras in the upper body.  The stability of the root, the mobility of the sacrum and the power at the solar plexus tranform at the heart to achieve higher goals; goals that come from the heart.  The heart chakra focuses on being in a state of acceptance of life which radiates peace, kindness and compassion internally and externally to ourselves and those around us.  When the heart chakra is open and balanced we break through our ego’s limitations and feel a connectedness to all beings.  You choose to see the good and beautiful around you and feel a strong connection to the divine presence in yourself as gratitude is a common result of an open heart.
“Being deeply loved by someone gives you strength, while loving someone deeply gives you courage.”
Lao Tzu
The heart chakra is your most vulnerable place.  When we are hurt in life or love, our first instinct is to build protective walls around ourselves in fear of being hurt again.  These walls, however, only cut us off from the very energy we long for which begins with self-love.  In order to receive or express true compassion and unconditional love, we must first open our heart to ourselves.  Then this beautiful, abundance energy can flow freely, just as the physical heart pumps life giving blood throughout our system, and then receives it back again; the infinite source of compassion, forgiveness and joy that is stored in the recesses of our heart can radiate throughout our lives,  flowing within us, to those around us and then back again.  The  Anahata Chakra holds the ultimate, most powerful healing energy there is on earth and beyond:  Love, Compassion, Forgiveness, Kindness and Joy.

The Heart Chakra is deeply associated with Nature and the element of Air, so enjoying this beautiful  day, try taking some time in the outdoors and recite the following mantra to connect with your own heart center:
I am an open channel for divine love
I open my heart and share it with others
I love who I am and embrace the world as it is

Yoga this Week – March 3, 2013

People are like stained-glass windows. They sparkle and shine when the sun is out, but when the darkness sets in their true beauty is revealed only if there is light from within.

The Third Chakra – Manipura – Jewel of the Navel

  • Color – yellow
  • Physical Location – solar plexus
  • Purposes – mental understanding of emotional life
  • Spiritual Lesson – acceptance of your place in the life stream. (self-love)
  • Mental and Emotional Issues – self esteem, fear of rejection, oversensitivity to criticism, self-image fears, fears of our secrets being found out, indecisiveness
  • Information Stored Inside Sacral Chakra– personal power, personality, consciousness of self within the universe (sense of belonging), knowing
  • Seed Sound – RAM

      Greetings dearest yoga students,

This week’s study takes us to the third chakra located in our solar plexus, the Manipura.  This chakra is deeply associated with the relationship you have with yourself.  It deals with self-esteem, personal power, knowing who you are and trusting in your intuition or “gut feeling” to guide you into manifesting your desires and dreams.   How we feel about ourselves determines the quality of our life and how successful we will be in our relationships, our work and our own capacity for self healing.  A balanced third chakra will guide us to our own unique gifts and the work that both gives you pleasure and supports those around you.

I am not afraid of storms for I am learning how to sail my ship.

Louisa May Alcott

Carolyn Myss describes an element of the Third Chakra in her book Anatomy of the Spirit  as “While we measure our own success in terms of our personal comfort and security, the universe measures our success by how much we have learned”.    The Manipura Chakra is associated with the element of fire, and is meant to transform and challenge us to find our inner strength and connection to our individual higher power when dealing with the world in which we live.  The color yellow, like the sun,  is also associated with warmth and healing.  When we truly find our own personal power, although it will likely take us to new cycles of learning and challenges, it creates a beautiful inner strength that both supports us and nurtures us from the inside.  Fuel your inner fire by repeating the mantra, “RAM” as your read the words below  connecting to that area below your rib cage an around your navel, the Manipura.

Yoga this Week – February 23, 2013

Let’s not forget that the little emotions are the great captains of our lives and we obey them without realizing it.

Vincent Van Gogh

Svadhishthana (sva = vital force; adishthana = seat)

Element: water   Colors: orange   Sense: taste   Mantra: VAM

Location: situated at the base of the pubis between the genitals and the sacral nerve plexus

Deals with: emotional identity, creativity, desire, pleasure and self-gratification, procreation, and personal relationships

Governs: sexual organs, stomach, upper intestines, liver, gallbladder, kidney, pancreas, adrenal glands, spleen, middle spine, auto immune system

Psychological and Emotional Issues: irritability, shyness, guilt, blame, sexual obsession, power, money, control, lack of creativity, morality

Balanced Chakra: feeling compassionate, friendly, intuitive, vital, sexual, satisfied, prosperous, having a sense of belonging and humor

Hari Om Dear Yoga Students,

The Svadhishthana Chakra is about relationship. If our sacral chakra is balanced we can trust, feel free and allow ourselves to be deeply connected to others in our life. It is the seat of creativity, procreation and sexual energy. Its element is water which when allowed to flow freely, no forcing and no holding back, guides us down the river of our life. All of life is movement; relationships ebb and flow, children grow, our bodies change with each passing year as do the people, places and things around us. Connecting to the vital force of our Svadhishthana chakra allows us to flow moment to moment, open and receptive to our emotions allowing us to meet each passing day with creativity, confidence and truth.

Trust only movement. Life happens at the level of events, not of words. Trust movement.

Alfred Adler

Try this Meditation to Balance the Svadhisthana Chakra

Put your hands in your lap, palms up on top of each other. Left hand underneath
the right hand. The tips of your thumbs touch gently. Visualize the location and
color of the Sacral Chakra.
Chant the sound VAM  and silently say:  I trust as I open myself to others. Creative, sexual and emotional energy flows freely.  I express my true nature with confidence.
