Yoga this Week – March 2, 2014

When you do yoga postures, surrender to the moment, be in the moment, don`t worry about weather you can touch your toes or not, just experience the process.
Then try to carry this attitude into the rest of your day, away from tension, guilt and anxiety.
Experience is the door to the here and now.

                    Amrit Kala

forward bend

Experience the process.  Everything is a  process.  The process is the road we walk from here to there.  When we are truly present as our life unfolds, worry, tension, guilt and anxiety take a back seat.  Surrender to this moment, try not to try too hard to shape it into something it is not or something you think it should be.  The process will reveal more of what you are supposed to learn, what you need to do and where this path you are on is leading.  Let go and allow yourself to simply experience the process (even if it is a difficult one).  knowing with true presence and awareness, the road you walk is leading you to higher ground.

Yoga this Week – February 23, 2014

If we go with the river, the energy of a thousand mountain streams will be with us, filling our hearts with courage and enthusiasm
. If we resist the river, we will feel ranked and tired as we tread water in the same place”.

Elizabeth Lesser

Greetings dearest yoga students,

Hoping this email finds you enjoying sunshine!  Allow yourself to flow with life today.  Let go of your perceived control and try to be okay with the uncertainty that this human life is destined to experience.  Remember that the goal in life is not to achieve some kind of concrete guarantee of future outcomes,  but think of it as more of a journey  towards a relaxed attitude toward the truth;  that we really never know what the future will hold.  Pema Chodron tells us that “a real cause of suffering is not being able to tolerate uncertainly – and thinking that it’s perfectly sane, perfectly normal, to deny the fundamental groundlessness of being human”.    This “groundlessness” does not have to have a negative connotation or be something to fear.  We can walk each day with faith, do the next right thing that is in front of us and relax into the mystery.  Our life may unfold to surpass our wildest dreams if we just dare to let go of the shore and flow down that river.  It is in this forward flow that; “The energy of a thousand mountain streams will be with us, filling our hearts with courage and enthusiasm” allowing us to truly enjoy and be present for the scenery of this special day.

“Shall I tell you what I find beautiful about you?
You are at your very best when things are worst”
                                                                  Quote from “Starman” movie

Utkatasana (chair pose)  exemplifies the amazing ability of the human spiirt to rise up and find the strength, grace and power we didn’t even know we had.  We have all had experiences  where   the bottom seems to fall out from underneath our life; a devastating phone call comes or some unexpected turn of events sends life into a tailspin.   It is at precisely these times, when help seems to come out of nowhere; people organize themselves to help, families let go of their differences to work together for the common goal, friends come from all directions.  It is at our worst,  that we become our very best.

If you have a moment today, take chair pose for a few breaths.  Breathe into the grounding at your feet, feel how your heart lifts and your hands reach up toward the sky.  Embodying this powerful pose allows us to experience our own power and also the source of power around us that enables us to lift ourselves  up and bask in the light and love that is always there, either to ignite our own spirits or maybe even more importantly, to lift others up. Thich Nhat Hahn says “No Mud, No Lotus” which means that we must go through the dark, the struggles, the sticky stuff to reveal our true beauty.   In the depths of the winter, dig deep and reach high.  Spring is surely on its way and  we await its coming with joy, strength and resolve.  Meanwhile, enjoy the snow!!

The Kleshas

Asmita – Ego

Our Ego is a complicated part of our psyche.  On one hand is it the part of the right brain that allows us to take action, to make plans and to accomplish what we desire in our lifetime.  It drives us forward.  On the other hand, it is when the ego side of us begins to attach our existence to what we do, what we have, the past or the future,  or any other outer impermanent feature of our lives,  that it causes suffering.  When our ego begins to whisper “you are not good enough as you are, you need to do more, be more. to be whole” is when it begins to increase anxiety and creates trouble inside ourselves and to others around us. The hunger for control and outer validation never gets satisfied and we remain in a state of depletion when we let the ego guide our days.

Yogic practices greatly soften the ego’s hold on us, Ethical Practices such as:  nonviolence, truthfulness, nonstealing, nonexcess, nonpossessiveness, purity, contentment, self-discipline, self-study and surrender to the divine plan as well as yoga asana, breath work and meditation all bring us closer to the reality of life and away from misperception.  In walking a spiritual path we keep our ego in check because these guidelines create inner tranquility and equanimity, we stay in the stream of goodness and out of self-seeking, ego driven rewards.

When something doesn’t feel quite like “you”, check in with your intentions.  Is the goal to attain some outer praise, avoid some inner pain or simply satisfy the need to feel validated?  If so, stop and breathe into the present moment, align yourself to what’s really important and let go of the rest.  Most of all, stay on the path that feels true to you, and only you, stepping away from fear and into the light of your true self.

Yoga this Week – December 23, 2013

I hope you are finding time to truly feel the precious moments in your life as they pass.  As we come into this last week of the year, take time to reflect with compassion on all the places you have been.  Reflect on those things that remained the same and the things that have changed; within you and around you.   Allow yourself some quiet time to go within and connect to the silence amidst the rush of comings and goings.  Thank you to all the beautiful yogi goddesses that filled the room on Winter Solstice night!  It was so heart warming to hear all of your intentions and watch you all connect to each other as a spiritual community!!

I wish for you all a happy, healthy, joy filled holiday season!

A deep bow of gratitude from me to you, Sat Nam.

 heart chak

“All you need is love.  The Beatles said it, and the Bible said it, and every wise saint who has ever spoken has sad it….Sure, there are other great things in life:  knowledge, and power, and spiritual understanding.  “But these shall pass away” (Paul writes in the New Testament).  “Where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away…And these shall remain:  Faith, Hope, and Love.  But the greatest of these is Love”

Elizabeth Lesser from “Broken Open”

hart trea

Amidst the comings and goings and rush of the Holiday Season, take time to remember what is truly important.  It is love that binds us to our family, not blood.  It is Love that connects us to our community, not just geography.  It is Love that connects us to our true essence, not intellectual knowledge.  Become aware of any tendency to create that picture perfect holiday, the one we see in media or read about in books.  Open your heart, feel into that everlasting quality of love that surrounds you and is inside you.    As effortlessly as the snow falls from the sky and returns once again to its source,  allow your love to flow and float knowing that truly “Love is All You Need”.

Greetings Dear Yoga Students,
We all know that change is inevitable, but yet we still cling to the known, the familiar, the comfortable.  George Harrison once said, “If we aren’t changing, we aren’t growing”.  Everything that grows must change.  It is just as important to our well being to accept and embrace change as it is to breathe.  Enjoy the moments of your day, embrace all that is in your life with enthusiasm knowing that you will never pass through this day again.  Be open to the shifting landscapes, the rise and fall of emotions, the ebb and flow of energy.  When the waves of change seem to be harsh and the seas are rough around you, remember that you are part of the ocean of movement and that, inevitably, we are being led towards are true direction.

“Clay is molded into vessels and because of the space where there is nothing you can carry water.  Space is carved out from a wall and because of the place where there is nothing you can receive light.
Be empty, and you will remain full…”
                                       Lao-Tsu
Greetings dear yoga students,
Are you having a good day?  If you are taking the time to read this email, chances are that you are having a “good” day.   It is very helpful to remember that at any given moment our entire world could be turned upside down and reality as we know it may vanish forever.  Examine how you define a “good” day.  Are you safe, healthy and of sound mind?  Is your perception clouded with some vision of what a good day is “supposed” to look like?     If something has disturbed your piece of mind, work at becoming empty.  Empty of the past, empty of expectations and empty of judgments.  In every moment, we have the opportunity to refine our minds, become present and open up to that grace that is always waiting to fill us up with its light.  We are vessels that are meant to channel the finest quality energy to ourselves and others, however, a channel needs to be clear in order for that energy to flow.  Empty, carve out space, clarify your thoughts and be open to this perfectly “good” day.

At times our own light goes out and is rekindled by a spark from another person.
Each of us has cause to think with deep gratitude of those who have lighted the flame within us.  ~ Albert Schweitzer

Dear Yoga Students,

Much gratitude now and always to all of you who show up week after week to your yoga mat.  Whether you realize it or not, your presence in class not only lights your own flame but also supports others that practice beside you on their path.  Sometimes all we need is a spark to rekindle our flame; a smile, a kind work, a new idea, a sweet heartfelt hug.  Never underestimate the power a small gesture can create.  May you and yours enjoy the small moments, those precious times together when we express our gratitude for each other and all we have in our lives.

**The road is all paved and ready so classes can   be held in our cozy, warm  yoga room; yay!***

“Without intention, all these postures, these breathing practices, meditations, and the like can become little more than ineffectual gestures. When animated by intention, however, the simplest movement, the briefest meditation, and the contents of one breath cycle are made potent.”

                                                                      Donna Farhi

Good Morning Dearest Yoga Students,

It feels wonderful to be wide awake on this glorious November morning.    Setting an intention can be extremely powerful, not only for your yoga practice but for your day, your week or your life.  With an intention set, our mind seems to calm down and we can rest in the fact that we know we are doing the right thing; that we are on course.

Whatever you are doing today, after reading this, stop for a moment or two and see if an intention for this day comes up for you.  It could be an intention to remain calm if difficulties are awaiting you.  It could be an intention to release judgement or cultivate joy inside yourself.  Whatever you wish for yourself, try setting an intention to cultivate that quality inside.  If you want to be happier, intend to be happy.  If you want more friends, intend to be friendly.  If you want more serenity, intend to act serene.  It may sound to simplistic, but it actually is.  With the full moon energy tonight,  you may want to go a step further and write your intention down to make it more concrete, the written word has much power.  As you move into your next task for the day after you read this whether you are going to do laundry, rake leaves, make breakfast for your family;  do it with an intention in your mind and notice what arises.  Live your life by design….try repeating the following mantra to keep you on your way:

“I am flowing down the river of my life, steering myself in the right direction”
