Monday, April 14th at 730-930pm

Rest yoga yin yang

In this special event,  restorative yoga, reiki energy healing and acupuncture are integrated to create an  indulgent experience designed to restore your balance, wellbeing and facilitate  a deep sense of calm in mind, body and spirit.

If you have never experienced acupuncture before, this would be a  wonderful, gentle introduction.  The  acupuncture points were specifically  chosen for  their universal healing properties including supporting the immune system, balancing energy  and creating a overall sense of relief.

Restorative yoga postures are supported by blankets, pillows, straps and bolsters to relieve tension, stress and open energy in the body.

Reiki Healing is a non-invasive channeling of universal healing energy with the intention of loving kindness  sent to the receiver.  The scent of essential oils allow your body and mind to relax even deeper by facilitating a calming effect.

                                   ~Buddha

Hari Om Dearest Yoga Students,

Hoping this message finds you enjoying the first signs of the new season that surely awaits us.   Think about the perseverance and patience that nature is gifted with.  The small bulbs that wait silently underground, the perennials that lay dormant waiting for the cues that it is time to begin their work of opening, pushing, growing up out of the dark earth into the light.  Nature does not give up, it finds a way to regenerate.  The natural world knows what needs to be done and does not question its role in its lifetime.  Experiencing the persistent and reliable cycles of nature  fills me with hope,  joy and faith that we too can rise above our difficult, dormant or hard times and shine in all our glory when the time is right.

It doesn’t just take talent, intellect or luck for great people to do great things;  Most often, it is simply the persistence and perseverance of doing the next right thing, showing up  and suiting up, waiting patiently when we have exhausted our efforts, or getting on the yoga mat in spite of ourselves.    We too must learn the lesson of  persistence as we confront situations in our lives where we are either forced to wait or forced to gather all our faith to keep hanging on day in and day out, dangling on the edge of vulnerability.   We are all capable of greatness in our own unique way.

sunflower om

The Yoga Sutras tell us is it the obstacles that lead us into a deeper understanding of ourselves which in turn allows to become deeply connected to others as well as the divine force that flows in and out of everything.  Directly confronting our difficulties with clarity, compassion and persistence creates freedom.  Freedom in knowing you are never really trapped in any situation.  For today, see if you can change your perspective to any “rocks” that are in your stream.  Stay focused, do the next right thing, however small it may seem, and try and find the lesson, the jewel that is hidden within.  Today, be persistent in your journey towards balance, freedom, peace and serenity.  Flow within the river of your life, patient, strong and free.

“The things that matter most in our lives are not fantastic or grand. They are the moments when we touch one another.” ~ Jack Kornfield

Yoga this Week - February 12, 2012

Greetings Dearest Yoga Students,

Hoping this email finds you well and enjoying this first day of extended light.  Energy, renewal and rejuvenation is in the air.  Snow is melting, days are longer and winter is surely drawing to a close (we hope).  Take time in each day to ponder those things that matter most in your life:   The everlasting possessions of the heart.  Scan back through your memory bank and notice the times that stand apart.  Notice the feeling tone of times when you made a true connection with another human being, whether it be through a loving encounter, being that shoulder to cry on or being the one doing the crying.  It may be times when you  simply felt deeply connected on a level that could not be expressed with words.  We are meant to connect, to engage and help each other in this lifetime.  It may be something as small as a smile in passing, a heart felt phone call or a visit to a friend in need.  Don’t hesitate to connect.  Listen to your heart, trust your hunches and allow the small acts of kindness to give your life purpose, happiness and meaning.

Yoga this Week – March 2, 2014

When you do yoga postures, surrender to the moment, be in the moment, don`t worry about weather you can touch your toes or not, just experience the process.
Then try to carry this attitude into the rest of your day, away from tension, guilt and anxiety.
Experience is the door to the here and now.

                    Amrit Kala

Experience the process.  Everything is a  process.  The process is the road we walk from here to there.  When we are truly present as our life unfolds, worry, tension, guilt and anxiety take a back seat.  Surrender to this moment, try not to try too hard to shape it into something it is not or something you think it should be.  The process will reveal more of what you are supposed to learn, what you need to do and where this path you are on is leading.  Let go and allow yourself to simply experience the process (even if it is a difficult one).  knowing with true presence and awareness, the road you walk is leading you to higher ground.

If we go with the river, the energy of a thousand mountain streams will be with us, filling our hearts with courage and enthusiasm
. If we resist the river, we will feel ranked and tired as we tread water in the same place”.

Elizabeth Lesser

Greetings dearest yoga students,

Hoping this email finds you enjoying sunshine!  Allow yourself to flow with life today.  Let go of your perceived control and try to be okay with the uncertainty that this human life is destined to experience.  Remember that the goal in life is not to achieve some kind of concrete guarantee of future outcomes,  but think of it as more of a journey  towards a relaxed attitude toward the truth;  that we really never know what the future will hold.  Pema Chodron tells us that “a real cause of suffering is not being able to tolerate uncertainly – and thinking that it’s perfectly sane, perfectly normal, to deny the fundamental groundlessness of being human”.    This “groundlessness” does not have to have a negative connotation or be something to fear.  We can walk each day with faith, do the next right thing that is in front of us and relax into the mystery.  Our life may unfold to surpass our wildest dreams if we just dare to let go of the shore and flow down that river.  It is in this forward flow that; “The energy of a thousand mountain streams will be with us, filling our hearts with courage and enthusiasm” allowing us to truly enjoy and be present for the scenery of this special day.

“Shall I tell you what I find beautiful about you?
You are at your very best when things are worst”
                                                                  Quote from “Starman” movie

Utkatasana (chair pose)  exemplifies the amazing ability of the human spiirt to rise up and find the strength, grace and power we didn’t even know we had.  We have all had experiences  where   the bottom seems to fall out from underneath our life; a devastating phone call comes or some unexpected turn of events sends life into a tailspin.   It is at precisely these times, when help seems to come out of nowhere; people organize themselves to help, families let go of their differences to work together for the common goal, friends come from all directions.  It is at our worst,  that we become our very best.

If you have a moment today, take chair pose for a few breaths.  Breathe into the grounding at your feet, feel how your heart lifts and your hands reach up toward the sky.  Embodying this powerful pose allows us to experience our own power and also the source of power around us that enables us to lift ourselves  up and bask in the light and love that is always there, either to ignite our own spirits or maybe even more importantly, to lift others up. Thich Nhat Hahn says “No Mud, No Lotus” which means that we must go through the dark, the struggles, the sticky stuff to reveal our true beauty.   In the depths of the winter, dig deep and reach high.  Spring is surely on its way and  we await its coming with joy, strength and resolve.  Meanwhile, enjoy the snow!!

Yoga this Week – January 19, 2014

Greetings Dear Yoga Students,

When you are discontent, you always want more, more, more. Your desire can never be satisfied. But when you practice contentment,

you can say to yourself, ‘Oh yes – I already have everything that I really need.’
Dalai Lama

Raga (Unnecessary Want) or Desire

The Third Klesha of the Tree of Misperception

Raga expresses itself by making demands.  We want something today because it was pleasant yesterday, not because we really need it today.  We want things we do not have.  What we do have is not enough and we want more.  We want to keep what we are asked to give away.  This is raga.   Think of it as a longing which turns into a desire which turns into an obsession which leads to dissatisfaction with reality.  Desire can be gross, subtle or hidden; as can all the Kleshas.  Addiction to anything (substance abuse, gambling, food, etc) is Raga at its most gross form.  A subtler form of raga would be a nagging discontent that tells us we constantly need more to be happy.   It is like the donkey that chases the carrot dangling from a string just in front of him that he will never be able to eat because he doesn’t see the string is fixed on a pole attached to its own head.

Raga keeps us  in a state of ever wanting because even when we get what we think we want, the misperception of RAGA tells us it is not enough.   The way out of Raga is to practice Santosha, contentment, one of the Niyamas ( yogic ethics) outlined in Patanjali’s Sutras.  Santosha tells us that we all that we need in this moment to be happy.  Look around and within and take notice of all you have to be thankful for.  Happiness is not necessary getting everything you want but acknowledging and expressing gratitude for what you already have.  Santosha burns through the fires of Raga because when we realize we are blessed just to be alive in this moment and recognize the impermanence of all that is given to us,  our wanting and desirous behavior ceases to impede our path to serenity.  Be Still and Know…in this moment…you have all you need to be whole, to be happy and to be free.
“When at peace and content with oneself and others
(Santosha), supreme joy is celebrated.

The Kleshas

Asmita – Ego

Our Ego is a complicated part of our psyche.  On one hand is it the part of the right brain that allows us to take action, to make plans and to accomplish what we desire in our lifetime.  It drives us forward.  On the other hand, it is when the ego side of us begins to attach our existence to what we do, what we have, the past or the future,  or any other outer impermanent feature of our lives,  that it causes suffering.  When our ego begins to whisper “you are not good enough as you are, you need to do more, be more. to be whole” is when it begins to increase anxiety and creates trouble inside ourselves and to others around us. The hunger for control and outer validation never gets satisfied and we remain in a state of depletion when we let the ego guide our days.

Yogic practices greatly soften the ego’s hold on us, Ethical Practices such as:  nonviolence, truthfulness, nonstealing, nonexcess, nonpossessiveness, purity, contentment, self-discipline, self-study and surrender to the divine plan as well as yoga asana, breath work and meditation all bring us closer to the reality of life and away from misperception.  In walking a spiritual path we keep our ego in check because these guidelines create inner tranquility and equanimity, we stay in the stream of goodness and out of self-seeking, ego driven rewards.

When something doesn’t feel quite like “you”, check in with your intentions.  Is the goal to attain some outer praise, avoid some inner pain or simply satisfy the need to feel validated?  If so, stop and breathe into the present moment, align yourself to what’s really important and let go of the rest.  Most of all, stay on the path that feels true to you, and only you, stepping away from fear and into the light of your true self.

I wish all of you a happy, healthy, joy filled 2014!   In keeping with the tradition of studying  yogic philosophies in the first part of the year,  for the next several weeks, we will be focusing on part of the Yoga Sutras called The Kleshas.  The Kleshas are known to be the misperceptions that keep us bound  and are often depicted as a tree that at the root of all our suffering is Avidya (spiritual ignorance) or misperception;  believing  the unreal to be the real or the impermanent to be permanent.

Avidya is the core klesha from which all the others arise.

Avidya – Ignorance

Asmita – Ego

Raga – Attachment to Pleasure

Dvesa – Aversion to Pain

Adhinivhesa – Fear of Death

Think about the Kleshas as all the misperceptions you have gathered in the course of your lifetime.  Some are born in our childhood, some we have been born into this life with.  Some are very subtle and some are very gross.  The yoga sutras tell us that if we are aware of these Kleshas at the root, and to not allow them to take hold in our psyches, we can release their power.  Together over the next few weeks, we will explore yogic tools that help us to find freedom from our Kleshas.

The end of the year is upon us.  It is a time of deep reflection for most.  A time to look back with compassion and illuminate  the path we have walked.  This time is a unique opportunity to reflect, accept and let go.  You have changed, you have been changed by the experiences you have traveled through and the obstacles you have been confronted with; you do not need to hold on for the past will always be part of who you are today.   The most important thing we can do is learn and let it go.  In order to live the life we are meant to live, we must make space by releasing the past.  If you find yourself holding on, bless whatever situation you are at odds with, trust that all of it was destined to happen and let yourself move forward, you will move forward non the less, so why not go with the flow of your life.  All we have is NOW…Let us begin

Classes for this Week

Monday and Thursday Evening at 730pm

Tuesday and Friday Morning at 930am

All classes this week will end with a Yoga Nidra – A guided savasana known as deep yogic sleep

I am teaching a special class tomorrow morning at 9am at Peconic River Yoga out on the North Fork if anyone is out that way, I would love to see you there.  I am excited to be part of this studio as a substitute teacher as it was one of the first studios I frequented in my early days of discovering yoga.   http://www.peconicriveryoga.com/schedule.html
