Much Love and Gratitude to all of you who continue to practice here.  We are not only yoga students that come together to practice, we are a community of like-minded individuals raising vibrations collectively to lift the energies within our community and the larger world.     I am truly humbled to be able to bring you this ancient practice in our intimate space honoring the traditional way it was taught many thousands of years ago!  Much   gratitude to  all who find their way to our yoga room, sangha and into my heart.   Shanti, shanti, shanti!  Ooooommmmmm

Greetings dearest Yoga Students,

In Yoga there are many dualities.  We ground down to rise up, hug in to shine out, breath in fully to exhale completely; go within to be present to what is all around us; the opposing action creates the unfolding of expansion, and beauty.

Last night my son came home beaming after  visiting a couple who had lost a child a few years back.  He said the mom had been feeling down and one of the boys suggested they visit, bring flowers and say hi.  The couple was so moved they invited the boys for dinner (feeding four teenage boys is a feat in itself!), and the visit ended up being much longer than anticipated.  The couple told stories of their teenage daughter and laughed and reminisced.  The boys were elevated, filled with pride and purpose by  lifting another; they expanded and experienced the beauty of giving.  Just as yoga poses reverberate in our bodes, I believe this experience will not be easily forgotten.

Sometimes the best things in life, are the opposite of what we think we need.  Ground down in your life today to shine out.  If your feeling defeated, down or frustrated, try giving to another and experience the expansion, the opening and the beauty that comes from giving.

“May you walk in Beauty and may you be aware that you already do”

                                                Navajo Blessing

Happy Snowy Spring!  Spring is a time of renewal and birthing that which has been dormant within the earth body of your heart.  Beauty is always available when you choose to see it.  Its easy to walk outside on a perfectly sunny day and walk in beauty, it is in the times of foul weather and grey skies that we need to work a little harder to see it.   Whether in the fallow periods when we feel we are stagnant, dark times when it’s hard to find the light or  in moments of grief when sadness wraps around our hearts like a heavy blanket, beauty waits to be found.  May you know today, that whatever your life is presenting to you, like the weather outside that we can’t control, we can choose to see, feel and hear all that is beautiful and choose to walk in beauty.  As I type this a cardinal is singing his beautiful song  and his red color seems to be just the perfect accent to the white branch he sits upon as if beckoning me to simply be aware.

Hari Om Dear Yoga Students,

Hope this email finds you experiencing freedom in the present moment.  When depression or anxiety takes the center stage in your life, check in and ask yourself; Am I pining over the past or fearful of the future?  Chances are you will discover the source of your suffering  is involved with the imagined past or the projected future.  We must realize that our memories are most times selective and our thoughts about the future are shear imagination.  The only moment in time that we truly can know is now.  Right now you can feel, see, taste and experience your life.  The point of power is always now, right under your feet and in your heart.  Connect and practice peace every day, all day by remembering time and again to return to the present moment where all is possible.

“Yoga is the practice of observing clearly, listening acutely and skillfully responding to the moment with all the compassion we can muster”

Donna Farhi

 2015-07-21 02.59.10

Greetings dear yoga students,

Thank you for your continued dedication to your practice for it is you that will make this world a better place.  By practicing the art of observing, listening and responding skillfully,  you not only bring health and right action to those around you,  but you also become a wonderful example of how a person can move through the world with integrity, kindness and love.  A beautiful student remarked to me that being in class felt like a “homecoming” to her.  Yoga is a homecoming; a homecoming to yourself and your true nature which has an amazing wellspring of intelligence, joy and compassion waiting just below the surface to shine!!

Happy Leap Day and a Special Happy Birthday to my Leap Year Hubby!!

“He [came to] realize that identifying his practice with things that could be lost [advanced postures & breath work, deep states of meditation],  would always leave him susceptible to fear anything that could be taken away through sickness aging or life circumstances was not a very wise thing to stand on.  It  was then that he realized that the only security lay in using his yoga practice to tether his awareness to the part of himself that was and is eternal.   It is in this tethering of awareness to the unchanging core of our being that true security can be gained….As our practice deepens and we gain confidence and courage,  we develop a growing appetite for this groundlessness and we start to yearn for a more liberated and open experience of ourselves and we become more willing to let go of old hand holds. We start to feel a resolute commitment to real freedom & we become vigilant about things that offer the trappings of freedom but fall short of delivering the goods”  Donna Farhi from Bringing Yoga to Life

images (18)

Greetings dearest yoga students,

The above excerpt from Donna Farhi’s book is, in essence, describing what Patanjali wrote about in the Yoga Sutra’s called Kleshas.  Kleshas are basically the core confusion of what is permanent with what is impermanent and the suffering we cause ourselves when we try to hold on to the impermanent things.  We all have fear of losing things we hold dear.  It may be loved ones, our jobs, our health, our strength, our physical appearance or the myriad of ego driven personas we believe ourselves to be. Finding rest within this “groundlessness” of living with the truth of uncertainty allows us to see through false promises,  let go and live with freedom, peace and joy!

“Shall I tell you what I find beautiful about you?  You are at your very best when things are worst”  Starman

download (1)

Utkatasana (chair pose)  exemplifies the amazing ability of the human spirit to rise up and find the strength, grace and power we didn’t even know we had.  We have all had experiences  where   the bottom seems to fall out from underneath our life; a devastating phone call comes or some unexpected turn of events sends life into a tailspin.   It is at precisely these times, when help seems to come out of nowhere; people organize themselves to help, families let go of their differences to work together for the common goal, friends come from all directions.  It is at our worst,  that we become our very best.

If you have a moment today, take chair pose for a few breaths.  Breathe into the grounding at your feet, feel how your heart lifts and your hands reach up toward the sky.  Embodying this powerful pose allows us to experience our own power and also the source of power around us that enables us to lift ourselves  up and bask in the light and love that is always there.  Thich Nhat Hahn says “No Mud, No Lotus” which means that we must go through the dark, the struggles, the sticky stuff to reveal our true beauty.   In the depths of the winter, dig deep and reach high.  Spring is surely on its way and  we await its coming with joy, strength and resolve.

faith-is-taking-the-first-step-even-when-you-dont-see-the-whole-staircase-19

Greetings dear Yoga students,

Martin Luther King, Jr. describes Ishvara Pranidhana perfectly in the above quotation.  ; having Faith and surrendering to the process even when you don’t know where it will lead you.  The fact is we really never have a guarantee that our plans will work out.  I have experienced many times when fear led me to overthink, manipulate, and try to control every part of a situation,  only to wake up to the fact that all I had to do was relax, trust and be open to the unfolding, which many times was more wonderful than I could have ever imagined!  The yogic  niyama, Ishvara Pranidhana calls us to let go and trust that there is a divine plan working along side you.  Let go of results, trust the process and even when you don’t know where you are going, lift your foot and take that first step!

Greetings dear Yoga Students,

When you do your yoga practice,  do it for more than the obvious physical benefits.  Yoga gives us an opportunity to connect with that sacred self that lies beneath appearances, beyond belief systems and transcends even time.  Yoga ignites our curiosity and expands our capacity for growth to help create a more meaningful, healthy and vital sense of living, not just for ourselves, but for all we come in contact with.
