Yoga this Week – September 29, 2013

“Have patience with everything that remains unsolved in your heart.  Try to love the questions themselves, like locked rooms and like books written in a foreign language.  Do not now look for the answers.  They cannot now be given to you because you could not live them.  It is a question of experiencing everything.  At present you need to live the question.  Perhaps you will gradually, without even noticing it, find yourself experiencing the answer, some distant day.”
                                    Rainer Maria Rilke
Greetings dearest yoga students,
Being at peace with the unknown is one of the greatest accomplishments we can acheive moment by moment.  To be “okay” with not knowing how things will turn out means we must first banish fear and replace it with faith.  Increasing our capacity for faith immediatly allows us to let go of our percieved control over our life.  Having faith that things will turn out alright enables us experience all of life without having to figure everything out.   Living the question means to let the answers be revealed when it is time so that you can remain in the present moment without anxiety. Many precious moments are squandered away overthinking situations that either have already happened or haven’t happened yet.   So try to LOVE the question that this day brings as if you were turning a corner on a beautiful mountain and be open to the beauty that the landscape of your life lays out before you.

Yoga this Week – September 22, 2013 – Thurs Nite Class 6pm this week only

“Strength does not come from physical capacity.  It comes from an indomitable will.”
―     Mahatma Gandhi

Greetings Dear Yoga Students,

Welcome to Fall!!

We had such a wonderful time yesterday gliding across the Harbor to our sweet little island nestled in between Setauket Harbor and the Long Island Sound.  The air was warm, the sun was playing peek a boo and hearts were connected.  Taking our yoga out into nature is so invigorating and transformative.  We are connected, like the Global Mala that took place yesterday connecting yoga communities all over the world, to nature in all its forms.  We learned an important lesson during our paddle as well;  That nature is not to be taken for granted in any capacity.  The wind and waves were kicking up on our way back and we had to use our Kali Power to get us home.  It was exhilarating, at times difficult,  but worth every effort.  Our journey across the water reminded me that sometimes the way is easy and we can glide carefree through the waters of our life, however, it is in the times when we must paddle into the wind, against the flow, or into great resistance that we find the true sense of power that lies within us at all times.    Special thanks to Debbi and Bob, for keeping our kayaking crew safe and accounted for.  Jai, Jai, Jai!!  Victory!

True happiness comes from the joy of deeds well done, the zest of creating things new!

 Antoine de Saint-Exupery

Greetings dear yoga students,

One of my beloved teachers, Rolf Gates, once said to us, “Don’t allow your duties to become your burdens”.  This saying has always stuck with me.  Within the daily round of doing, taking care of, maintaining and getting things done, we can sometimes feel very burdened.  While completing our yearly ritual today of making and jarring up our tomato sauce, this quote hovered over me like the fine sunshine that was streaming down from the sky.  “Don’t allow your duties to become your burdens”.  The hard work we put in today pleasures us all year long; when we open a jar in mid-winter, when we give some to someone having hard times or when we simply share a meal with family and friends.  Doing something once a year creates a specialness, an excitement and my husband and I usually feel a “zest in creating” it (until right about now, when we are ready to collapse).  But, it is in our daily duties that we also need to find that joy for a job well done  .  Whatever your  duties consist of this week, try to look at them with a fresh attitude.  If your duties are really become your burdens, try to change the way you do them, creating an atmosphere that promotes happiness or give yourself a special reward for completing the task.  If your duties still seem heavy to carry, simply look back at the end of the week and find true happiness knowing your deeds were well done to the best of your ability with an intention of love and service for all.

The reward of a thing well done, is having done it.

“Amazing isn’t it how some people see the basket half empty and others see it half full.  Some see life hopeless; others hopeful.  Even when things are less than perfect, if you can think of the good, the beautiful, the hopeful, you’ll be more than sustained–you’ll conquer
 –
 Greetings dear. beautiful yoga students,
 –
Remind yourself today that negative thinking will never be productive.  When you find your mind turning to those dark places, take control and change your perspective on whatever situation is baffling you at the time.  Think upon whatever is true, beautiful and right about what surrounds you.  Experiment with this and put it into practice in small ways.  If your day is going less than perfect, re-frame it in your mind.  Our minds have the power to create and bring into fruition whatever it rests upon.  Allow your mind to rest upon what it truly wonderful in your life right now….put it into practice and try to enjoy being a learner.  You may just find that by focusing on the positive,  the peace and joy of the divine spirit that lives in all things will be close at hand supporting, and guiding your day.

Yoga this Week – June 16, 2013 – Happy Father’s Day!

“Isn’t life grand?  With all its beauty, hardships and craziness, isn’t life itself an amazing, wild ride?”,  my big brother said as he almost squeezed the very breath out of me with his engulfing bear hug.  We laughed as we continued to compare life to a big pot of stew with all its flavors intermingling creating a delicious, hardy meal that satisfies the soul,  and wished each other well as we went on our separate ways.  The little  whisper of his wisdom stayed with me overnight into this morning.  Life IS grand, with all its twists and turns,  it is still a beautiful journey to be both respected and cherished like a ride up a scenic mountain highway; at times scary, at times exciting, at times distasteful, at times calm or breathtakingly beautiful.  Cherish your life today, cherish the fathers that are in your life as well as beyond this life.  Be present to the unique flavor of today, be compassionate, be humble, be aware of the river of awareness that runs just under the surface of things that whispers…”Isn’t Life Grand?”…

Sagittarius _lunar_eclipse

The Phoenix rises from the ashes of the past.  You, too, can recreate yourself and make a fresh start.  You can experience a Brilliant Breakthrough.  That is this Full Moon’s message.”

Hatha Yoga

Ha – Sun           Tha – Moon       Yoga – to connect

Hatha Yoga is to connect and balance the elements of the sun and moon that lies within us.   In the early morning hours there was a full moon lunar eclipse.  This astrological event is both mysterious and powerful.  The energy of the full moon reminds us that we are complete, whole and abundant exactly as we are.  As the full moon reflects the brillance of the sun, our energetic, powerful “Ha”, sun element shines through and lights up our receptivity “tha” moon energy.  The sun and moon are deeply connected as is illustrated as the earth moves in front of the sun and changes the color of the white moon to a dark red filtering a small amount of sunlight on its surface.  This ha and tha energy within us are deeply connected as well.

See full size image

The full moon reminds us that all that has occured within our lives in the last month has led up to this moment.  It is a time to sit back, watch, allow and let it all be.  There are times for action in our lives and a time to let go.  Within our asana practice there are times of expending great effort to release energy, wake up our bodies and quiet our minds.  There are also times when we hold the pose, release in relaxation, sit still, let go and trust the process.  This ebb and flow, giving and receiving creates the balance we so long for in our lives.  We simply cannot hold on to pleasure  or force pain to go away, try as we might, we must accept as best we can the process.  Just as the moon cannot possibly hold on to its fullness or emptiness, we must let go and allow our lives to unfold;  trusing the phases of waining, waxing and fullness to bring us to wholeness again.

” The Past and the Future is a joke to me now. I see that they’re nothin’. I see they ain’t here. The only thing that’s here is you and me…..I love you. Not, not like they told you love is….[the story books are bull],  love don’t make things nice, it ruins everything! It breaks your heart, it makes things a mess. We, we aren’t here to make things perfect. Snowflakes are perfect, stars are perfect. Not us! Not us!”
 Ronny Cammareri, “Moonstruck

Storybooks and fairytales have a way to paint a picture of life that always has a happy ending.  The guy gets the girl, the conflict resolves and all is as it should be.  But what we must remember is that life is full of suffering.  That loving, and being truly vulnerable in your life doesn’t always look nice.  Truly living wholeheartedly means breaking your heart sometimes, making a mess.  The above quote is one of my all time favorite movie lines.  We are not here to be perfect, for our lives to look flawless, to create what society’s idea of a beautiful life is.    We are here to have our hearts broken a thousand times because we are meant to experience the oceans of emotions our life is full of.  We are here to experience the wonder of being human; with all its hills and valleys,  like the moon we continually cycle through a myriad of phases to become whole again.

See full size image

Yoga helps lead us away from this idea of perfectionism, that somehow we are flawed because our practice is not perfect.  We fall down, we sweat, we struggle  but we get back up again, we return to our mats and gain strength, fortitude and hope.  “We breath and something in us softens, makes space for the imperfections”.  So let go of the storybook idea of how your life should look.  Let go and enjoy the scenery of  today.  Be vulnerable, be open, allow grief, joy, success and failure, falling down and getting back up to all be part of the great tapestry that is your life.  When you reach into the beauty of imperfection;   the crooked tree, the moon’s craters,  the clouded sky, tears in a loved one’s eyes, experience it fully, turning away from nothing that you find.  The messes will be there,  the heartaches will surface, the past and future are but memories and dreams, breathe it all in and find your joy in being present through it all for yourself and those around you.

Yoga Pictures on Beach of Amy 019

Yoga is invigoration in relaxation. Freedom in routine.

Confidence through self control.

Energy within and energy without.

Ymber Delecto

Greetings Dearest Yoga Students,

This quote reminds me of the lesson in dualities we find in our yoga practice like grounding down to rise up or hugging in to shine out. At first glance, these may seem like opposing forces but in reality it is the opposite that manifests the desired result.

Being invigorated while remaining relaxed is a lesson in becoming awake.   Awake to all that is around and within us without having to do anything. Without having to change anything; simply enjoying being present through a calm, relaxed state. Routines can at either be mundane or nourishing. When we look at our daily rounds as burdens, we trudge through them with a heavy heart feeling trapped in “have tos” and “shoulds”. However, if we move through our routines as rituals in our life, bring gratitude with our efforts for what we are both responsible for  and able to do, it can create a freedom in knowing these routines support our life and those around us. It turns our burdens into acts of love. When we first consider the discipline of self- control, it may seem like an imposing act of self-denial but controlling our impulses and learning to trust our actions creates a simple confidence in our decision making. We can trust that we will act from a place of clarity and right thinking. And finally is it through cultivating our inner energy that we are able to send out the finest quality of energy to the world around us.

Working with dualities in this way can enable us to use what at first seems like an opposing force to catapult us to new heights. When chanting to Ganesh, the elephant headed God who is thought to be the remover of obstacles, we are really asking for our intellects to be inspired to see the open doors of opportunity that are all around us. Sometimes the obstacles that are in our path are the very things that can send us forward reminding us we already possess everything we need to create an invigorated, free, confident life filled with the finest quality of energy we could ever imagine.

Yoga this Week – April 14, 2013

“When you experience yourself in stillness – that is, when you give your undivided attention to experiencing the truth about you – you will experience the conflict-free, calm, dynamic peace of perfectly centered abundant life energy”

Eric Shiffman

Greetings dearest yoga students,
Hoping this day finds you basking in the light of gratitude and surrender to what has materialized in your life.  Feel into this moment as you feel into a yoga pose.  Align yourself to the spaciousness of all this moment has to offer.  Breathe in acceptance and breathe out love.   Feel into the stillness at the end of your next breathe and connect to your true self as you draw near to the present, the here and now.  Draw up the finest quality energy and co-create your day as one that centers around peace, compassion and love.

Yoga this Week – March 24, 2013

The winds of grace are blowing all the time. You have only to raise your sail.
Sri Ramakrishna
Ajna Chakra – Third Eye

Purpose: Generates Intuition & Inner Wisdom

Energy: Soul

Element: Light

Location:  In between the eyebrows

Color Association: Indigo

Embraces: Self-Awareness

Spiritual Lesson: Material Detachment/Open-mindedness

Statement:  I See

Anja Chakra located in between the eyebrows is often referred to as the Third Eye. When this chakra opens it is like a gateway allowing divine wisdom to enter our minds. Like the wind it is always there waiting, all you have to do is allow it to flow.

The symbol of OM in the center of the chakra represents the unleashed energy of the Kundulini Snake rising upward. The crescent moon of feminine receptivity embraces the circle above it. This circle is a golden dot which is the essence of spiritual energy. It represents being in your center. When we chant the mantra “OM” we are embracing all of this universal divine energy, OM brings the ego self into union with the spirit self.

It’s not what you look at that matters, it’s what you see.

Henry David Thoreau

The Ajna chakra opens us up to our highest intelligence which is a distinct balance between our intellect (our thinking mind) and our intuition (our feeling mind).
When the the ego realizes that the fulfillment of its highest dreams is only to be found through merging with the Higher Self, the false masks the ego has created fall away and who you thought you were or who you thought you ought to be lose their grip.  What we see is made up of all we were told is good, bad, ugly or beautiful thoughout our life.  Our third eye opens us up to our own inner guidance which may or may not agree with all we have learned.  When the third eye opens,  you allow your true self, with all its individual thoughts and feelings, to shine forth. So Hum, ” I am what I am” There is no guilt, no need for illusion or pretense. You are totally in the present and you realize that the you you have been seeking or trying to change into something or someone else has been there,  in complete perfection,  all along.

Trust yourself. You know more than you think you do.
