Yoga this Week – June 12, 2017

“Your life is a sacred journey.  It is about change, growth, discovery, movement, transformation, continuously expanding your vision of what is possible, stretching your soul, learning to see clearly and deeply, listening to your intuition, taking courageous challenges at every step along the way….And from here, you can only go forward, shaping your life story into a magnificent tale of triumph of healing, of courage, of beauty, of wisdom, of power, of dignity, and of love”  .

                                                                   ~~Caroline Adams

Returning home from an adventurous weekend, I am reminded of the great power in being still, being challenged, being opened and being free.  Stepping out of our comfort zone, whether it is to sit on a meditation cushion, step on to our yoga mats, climb a mountain or open ourselves up to another, helps to expand our “vision of what is possible” in our lives.  Life itself is the greatest journey we will ever take.  It is an adventure into the unknown forest of emotions, into the complexity of our minds, the amazing resilience of our bodies, the flowing energy of relationships and most importantly, an adventure into that deep inner wellspring of compassion and love  from which all magnificent tales of triumph are born.

Yoga this Week – April 24, 2017

What we’re trying to do in yoga is to create a union, and so to deepen a yoga pose is to actually increase the union of the pose, not necessarily put your leg around your head.

~Rodney Yee

See full size image

Each time we come to our mats, we have a chance to explore interconnection. We begin with our breath and move into our bodies, but it doesn’t stop there. As we create connection with a pose, we adjust, consider, explore, become present and breathe into the experience. We soften into the edges of the pose and watch them dissolve as we flow moment to moment; this might very well lead you to “put your leg around your head”  Integration, alignment and breath leads you deeper into your body, into the mystery.    As you move into this day, feel into the energy around you. Integrate, align and breath within the moments and see if you can increase the most important connection of all; the present.

Greetings Dearest Yoga Students,

A full moon is on the rise for tomorrow night and the energy is already brewing.  Just like a snake, the moon sheds the past month day by day as gracefully as the sky holds it in its embrace.  We to must learn to let go, to shed the past over and over again until it becomes natural to feel its impressions slip through our fingers.  We can carry a lifetime of regrets or passively fear the inevitable changes that are coming or we can let go like a snake lets go of his dead skin; without mourning only excitement for what is to come. .    Take time to meditate on the Full Moon this week.  Allow its fullness to remind you that cycles come around, things pass and things come.  Let its bring light remind you to shed the light of awareness on this moment.  The present moment where past and future stand still and all possibilities await you.

“To have a sacred place…is an absolute necessity for anybody today.  You must have a room (or corner of a room) …, where you can simply bring forth what you are and what you might be.  This is a place of creative incubation.  At first you may find that nothing happens there, but if you have a sacred place and use it, something (wonderful) eventually will happen”
                                          Joseph Campbell

Let’s face it, we could all use a week long retreat away from all of our demands and responsibilities but that is not always possible.  You can, however, learn to create that sacred space and retreat to it whenever you feel inclined.  Also, carving out a certain amount of time at a specific time of day can afford you the structure and discipline to find that quiet, alone time we all crave.  Whether it be 10 minutes sitting in quiet contemplation or an hour of gentle stretching, try creating a space of your own somewhere in your home.  Even if it is just a corner where you place a candle, journal or some other meaningful reminders.  Once you take the time to make this simple sacred space, you will soon wonder how you ever did without it.

thoughts

We can either let our thoughts pull us in different directions like wind blows a leaf at will or we can stop and be the still point like a tree, standing firm as the turbulence moves around and through us.  We cannot stop the mind, just like we can’t control people, places or things around us, but we can choose to be the calm force amidst the changing winds.  Meditation teaches us to “be still and know”, becoming still allows us to see our thoughts with clarity so when we leave our practice we have a better sense of who we are and what is really important to us. These truths lie beneath habitual thought patterns, stilling your body, focusing on your breath is like going underneath the water to discover that an entire new world exists beneath the surface..  A world that lives within you. A world that is calm, focused and knows exactly how to be in this sometimes confusing environment of the mind.

Mantra, Music and Asana: Tuning into Vibration & Intention this Saturday November 12, 1-4pm

Long Island Yoga Association presents their November Workshop: Mantra, Music and Asana: Tuning into Vibration & Intention with Amy Perri, eRYT500 and friends. Discover how the elements of music, mantra and yoga come together in this uplifting, informative workshop. During this auspicious time that is flowing toward the season of gratitude, we will elevate our vibrations in body, mind and spirit to send out the energy of peace, love and non-violence in a world that so desperately needs each one of us to do so. As a yoga community, we will discover the amazing, energy-shifting power of both a gentle, slow-flow asana class and kirtan serenaded by the rhythms of live music. The day will begin with a dharma talk, followed by an asana class and conclude with a Live Musical Kirtan (A call and response form of group chanting). Amy on Harmonium, Dave DeBenedetto on Guitar and Jim Romeo on Percussion will lead you through original compositions of simple, ancient chants. This workshop is for all levels and no experience necessary.

Yoga this Week – October 10, 2016

The important thing is to be awake now, to feel the transparency, to feel the universal shining through the individual, and then to allow life to express itself though us.

                 Rolf Gates

Set aside some time to  sit silently and connect to your breath.  Close your eyes and begin listening to sounds around you.  Allow the air of your breath to pass through you with clarity.   Let go of your need to control your outer circumstances, feel the fluidity and transparency of life.  We are not solid; we are light, joy, love and bliss anytime we make the decision to connect to that universal energy and allow “life to express itself through us”.

Good Morning Dearest Yoga Students,

Having spent the weekend with one of my favorite yoga teachers, Rolf Gates, I am filled with a refreshed enthusiasm for my practice and my life.  His teachings are rooted in the Yoga Sutras by Patanjali and the Buddha Dharma. Which is both practical experience and loving kindness.   By having an Intention, and paying Attention we can come to a deep Understanding that the basic need to be loved, accepted and forgiven is in all of us and that to begin by forgiving ourselves is to open the wide doorway to forgive others.     The most basic teachings are sometimes the most profound.  I awoke this morning hearing this message:

“The most important things we can do in our life is to not harm ourselves, not harm others and let our actions be rooted in loving kindness.”

At the end of the day, at the end of our lives, aren’t these truly the only things that matter?
