“False idenity occurs when we identify with the tools of perception
instead of the true Self”

                                                                   Yoga Sutra (11.6)

Hari Ohm dear yoga students,

Yoga encourages us to go deep within to find our true self which resides free from ego and transends physical and material limitations.  One of the key priciples that yoga teaches us is that we are perfect exactly the way we are, a diamond clouded over by the dust of misperceptions and past experiences.  The eight limb path of yoga simply acts as the clearing process which lets go of the un necessary and makes space for clarity..

When we truly own who we are, standing in our truth, regardless of what others may think or society may dictate, we are actually inspiring others to do the same.  Our truth, with all of our pain, issues, past and present is who we were meant to be.  Connecting with our true identity means connecting to the sacred within and allows us to  tap into our immense capacity for creativity, compassion, strength and love which ultimately engages us deeply with life itself.

Try to nourish yourself with others who are walking on this path to truth.  Have compassion for those who don’t have the resources or desire to join you.  Be happy for those who have found themselves but try not to concern yourself with those that refuse to accept you for who you are, simply wish them well and follow your destiny.

“All spiritual jouneys have a destination to which the travelor is unaware.  Most of us who start out on the yoga mat, do not realize that, if we dedicate ourselves to practice, its only a matter of time before the mat becomes an altar”

Stephen Cope

Greetings dear yoga students,

The practice of Bhakti Yoga is the yoga of devotion.  Every pose we take, every breath we inhale, every intention and action is practiced as devotion to the divine which lives both inside and outside you.  The deeper we penetrate our physical world through our asana practice, we realize the divine lives in all things physical and that the physical lives in all things spiritual.  The bhakti yogi seeks more than anything to develop a “direct, intense, personal relationship with the divine or simply with life itself”.

There are countless ways to practice Bhakti yoga.  Chanting spiritual mantras,  praying with beads, gardening in the earth’s soil, relishing the light in a loved ones eyes, playing with a child or finding compassion in your heart when it is needed most are all postures we can take to express our devotion to the divine forces that are all around us.  We can also come to our practice with dedication and reverence for this ancient science which, in turn, enables us to transform our own yoga mat into a sacred space where we come to be in the presence of the divine that is both inside, outside and in all things.

Yoga this Week – June 16, 2012

“Why should we be in such desperate haste to succeed, and in such desperate enterprises?  If a man does not keep pace with his companions, perhaps it is because he hears a different drumer.  Let him step to the music which he hears, however measured or far away”
                                      Henry D. Thoreau

Greetngs dearest yoga students,

How often do we try to keep pace with our companions?  Pushing forward towards an ideal when we’re not even sure we connect to its truth.  Our society, families, friends all have ideas of how we should live our life.  It is time now to find your own truth.  Listen closely to your heart as you approach a decision.  What truly resonates for you may be quite different from those around you. Do something because you understand why you are doing it deep down in your core and it makes sense for you and those around you.

Give yourself space to feel into the question, check in with your physical, mental and emotional energies, they are the guides to your intuitive nature which always knows what is right.  Take a breath, get yourself in a calm state and have the patience and faith to listen to what your higher self is telling you. Trust yourself enough to be guided from within, not because you feel you need to adhere to some arbitrary code that others have laid out for you.  We live and let live which means we also honor that others have their own path, we niether judge or retaliate; we honor their decision and go our own way to decide for ourselves.

Most importantly,  don’t be afraid to fail.  It is in taking risks, trying out new ways of being that we find ourselves and create the life we were meant to live.  Nothing would get done if we all waited untill we did it perfectly.  Encourage yourself with compassion, focus, vision and a little light hearted humor.   It is in the falls we take that we learn how to endure, create and make this world a better place for ourselves and others.

You cannot discover new oceans until you have the courage to lose sight of the shore.

Yoga this Week – June 10, 2012

**Sorry to say this again, but just in case you missed it:  Please be mindful as you drive into the culdesac.  There are two or three spots at the top of the culdesac just before the fire hydrant on the right.  If those spots are open, please try and park there and walk down if possible.  Otherwise, park your car head in and stay away from the basketball hoop that is opposite of my house (on the south side of the circle) as those are the neighbors that complained. Best to park facing my property.  Thank You**

Greetings Dearest Yoga Students,

We do not stand alone.  This journey through life is shared in countless ways.  What happens to you, happens to me.    When we release the dillusion that we are separate from everything around us, Ahimsa (non-violence) flows through us as easily as water flows down a steep mountain slope.  Insead of reserving your deep affection and attention for a select few, widen your circle of compassion and embrace with loving kindness everyone and everything around you.  When we give, we actually do receive.

During the long night at the Relay for Life, this was epitimized by the common goal of all who attended, contributed and whose lives have been touched by cancer. The teamwork that our Relayoga Warriors shared in was so heartwarming and brought us all that much closer as human beings who live, work and practice in the same community.  I was proud to be part of such an amazing event.  Much gratitude to you all for helping us reach our fundraising goal of $1,000, especially our yoga warriors, for making it happen.

Greetings Dearest Yoga Students,

Three of the most precious gifts in life that are easily overlooked are Awareness, Forgiveness and Gratitude.  Be aware of all you are and all you have. Forgive yourselves and others for being learners in this lifetime. Be grateful for all your experiences and you will walk in grace for all your days.  Cultivating these three gifts as often as you can will enable you to tap in a wellspring of vitality within yourself.  It is from this vital energy that we find our path of service.  If we truly are aware, for give and are grateful for others, we cannot help but see the humanity in the eyes that surround us.  It is through this human connection that we are able to be the expression of the very love we seek.

It’s time. If you are to walk the path of heart, then it is time…”
If not now, when? If not me, who? To walk the path of the heart is a great honor. Every human has the choice to walk this path, but very few will decide to make it. Why? Well, because you can’t act and behave like everyone else behaves. You must be the person who will learn to look within. You must be the person who will be fully accountable for yourself. You must be the person who prays and meditates. You must be the person who will sacrifice. You must decide to be a Peaceful Warrior

Birds are a miracle because they prove to us there is a finer, simpler state of being which we may strive to attain.
                                                          Doug Coupland

 Good Morning dearest yoga students,

 Step outside your door and take in all the amazing abundance of the natural world.  We can learn so much from natures rhythms as we allow her to nurture, sooth and remind us we are all part of the same whole.  I get a deep sense of comfort as I watch the birds fly back and forth from tree to tree.   They have the freedom and joy many of us long for.   The many varieties, sizes and colors interact and co-exist in harmony with each other and the world around them, adjusting from season to season with the ability to simply sing after a storm.   Take stock in what you see in the bird kingdom today, after so many days of rain the power of the sun is orchestrating a beautiful symphony all around you.  Allow yourself to soar into the day, whatever your plans.  Try to look up often, walk barefoot in the grass allowing the breeze to caress your skin and remind yourself you are as free as the birds in the air to sing your unique song making the world a better place.

Yoga this Week – May 6, 2012

***Scroll down to the bottom to see some upcoming events***

“We are far now from home and weary from our travels. The sun is setting and there is no destination in sight. Yoga is a lamp lit in the window of our home, dimly glimpsed across the spiritual wilderness in which we wander. At a time when we could not feel further from our home, yoga reminds us that we are already there, that we need simply awaken from our dream of separation, our dream of imperfection.”
                                                Rolf Gates-Meditations from the Mat

Greetings dearest yoga students,

Yoga brings us home.  In the quiet spaces in between the movement of breath, of postures, of thought, what remains is perfect peace.  We must let go of the illusion that we are not enough, that our lives need to look a certain way, that our bodies should not age, that we are separate from each other and simply dive in to the present moment where we are welcomed with pure acceptance.

In dealing with a particularly challenging issue this past week, the outpouring and support from those around me was astonishing.  I went from feeling hopeless to complete gratitude as I experienced a profound realization that I am being carried by a grace that is beyond my comprehension.  The most important thing was that I stopped carrying all the weight and reached out.  I simply fell into the arms of those around me and magically solutions popped up, people came to my aide and my situation was solved.

Know that you too are being carried by this same grace, there is a community of loving others that will be there to catch you when you fall and carry you if need be.  Practice your yoga as a way to see through this “spiritual wilderness” to the next face that may need you to carry them.  Our journey in this life is simply to to remember what we have always known:  We are one, we are already home and we possess all we need to be happy, joyous and free

Yoga this Week – April 14, 2012

"To laugh often and much; To win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children;
To earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends;
To appreciate beauty; To find the best in others; To leave the world a bit better,
whether by healthy child, a garden patch, or a redeemed social condition;
To know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived."

Ralph Waldo Emerson

Greetings dear yoga students,

Hoping this email finds you appreciating the amazing energy of spring.  As the world around us displays its enduring beauty, so we must come to realize we are part of all of creation unfolding.  Our interactions with each other, the world and ourselves have a tremendous impact whether we see the effects or not.  Shopping at our local supermarket yesterday, I was filled with such a sense of community and love as row by row,  I was greeted by neihbors, students, and friends; hugs and greetings of concern and well wishes abounded in our interactions (it took me twice as long to shop, but it was worth it).

  Keep your life simple, realize that it is in the small everyday acts of kindness that make a life meaningful, joyous and productive.  Go where your heart leads you, be quick to laugh and eager to give.  We don’t have to accomplish grandiose acts of valor in order to “help one life breathe easier”.  Mother Theresa said to “do small things with great love”.  Take pride in your small acts of kindness today and live this day well!!!
