Yoga this Week – September 29, 2012

“The habit is holding on, the practice is letting go.”
“When I begin a meditation the fullness of my experience, the fullness of my life, often rushes in and I have a moment of resistance. “How can I bare all of this life?” Then I remember that to be the space that can hold all of this joy, all of this sensation, all of this love, all of this sadness, all of this knowing, all of this not knowing, all of this life….. I just need to let go.”

Rolf Gates

Dearest Yoga Students,

How Do we bare all of this life. Sometimes it feels as if our cup is running over with joy and other times that same cup is full of many things we never wanted or asked for. If all things truly do pass, we must trust that in the letting go, we make the space to hold whatever it is we need to hold in the present moment. Realizing that whatever your cup is full of will eventualy slip through your fingers like water through sand. Holding on only enables our cup to remain full of the past, full of judgement, full of misperceptions. Letting go creates emptiness, clarity and that open space to receive the most sacred of all things, the present moment which somehow always has room to hold all the joys, sensations, love, sadness, knowing and not knowing we are meant to experience.

Once a month we will Incorporate supported, gentle yoga postures, pranayama, chanting and Reiki. Beneficial for all levels, including those with special situations or limited mobility. Will most likely be the 2nd Friday of each month, date will be announced at the beginning of each month.  Pleased sign up as soon as possible as this class is sure to fill.

Saturday October 13th begins a once a month Yoga Jam!! This class will be intentially challenging on all levels. Aparigraha
greedlessness, non-attachment

The yogi feels that the collection or hoarding of things implies a lack of faith in God and in himself to provide for the future….By the observance of aparigraha, the yogi makes his life as simple as possible and trains his mind not to feel the loss or the lack of anything. Good Morning Dear Yoga Students,

As this Fall draws us inward I wish for your eyes to see all the abundance that you already possess right now in this moment in this time in your life. One beautiful morning this past week I walked down to the shore, a little less than a mile from my house and I was embraced with the serene beauty that was all around me. It caused me to stop and I experienced a moment that seemed to have transformed into one of those magical moments suspended in time. I paused, connected to my breath, did some simple yoga postures and sat on a piece of wood to silently sit in meditation.. As the rythmic sound of the waves made their way into my mind and the gentle warm breeze carressed my skin, I felt so completely connected to all that was around me. The feeling of abundance and gratitude seemed to encapsulate my entire being. If we take even a moment to connect with all that is precious and dear to us in our lives right now, we allow the divine light to shine into our hearts. A moment like this can change your entire day from one that is ordinary to one that is full of miracles and we seem to lack nothing.

“Forget what others think of you, forget the future goal of achievement; arrive instead in this body/mind, attending to this present moment. This is the whole of practice.”.

Greetings Dear Yoga Students,

How often do we perform tasks, try to achieve or be something special in order to receive praise, boost our ego or stand out among our people?  We must remember that the intention of showing up, doing our best and allowing spirit to work through us is all we need to do. Being humble is not a sign of weakness, it is really a sign of great strength, stability and courage. Humility is to except the divine plan for your life, which is simply to open up to your unique gifts and use them to enrich those who cross your path in your unique situations.

Seek not to be commended in a worldly way but try to find that beautiful flow of muditha.  Muditha is achieved by doing what you love to do in your unique humble way  and in the doing you naturally spread peace, love and joy to others creating an energy that flows right back to you and ultimately becomes reward enough.  Feeling good by doing good in the present moment.  Forget what others think, focus instead on arriving where you are in the flow of your life.    This is your work, this is the whole purpose of practice:  to arrive, simply to arrive here and now….

….have patience with everything tht remains unsolved in your heart.  Try to love the questions themselves, like locked rooms and like books written in a foreign language.  Do no now look for the answers.  they cannot now be given to you because you could not live them.  It is a question of experiencing everything.  At present you need to live the question.  Perhaps you will gardually, without even noticing it, find yourself experiencing the answer, some distant day.

Keep Coming Back
Keep coming back to your breath
Keep coming back to your body
Keep coming back to this moment
Keep coming back to who you really are.

No matter what life puts before you, keep coming back to all the beauty around you, to all the love inside you, to what really matters.  Even if you stray a thousand and one times, keep coming back to the truth of who you really are.  Keep coming back to the eternal, internal essence of you.  Keep coming back to what you know to be true; that the compassion and love you hold in your heart is meant as much for you as for every living being.  Keep Coming Back.

“False idenity occurs when we identify with the tools of perception
instead of the true Self”

                                                                   Yoga Sutra (11.6)

Hari Ohm dear yoga students,

Yoga encourages us to go deep within to find our true self which resides free from ego and transends physical and material limitations.  One of the key priciples that yoga teaches us is that we are perfect exactly the way we are, a diamond clouded over by the dust of misperceptions and past experiences.  The eight limb path of yoga simply acts as the clearing process which lets go of the un necessary and makes space for clarity..

When we truly own who we are, standing in our truth, regardless of what others may think or society may dictate, we are actually inspiring others to do the same.  Our truth, with all of our pain, issues, past and present is who we were meant to be.  Connecting with our true identity means connecting to the sacred within and allows us to  tap into our immense capacity for creativity, compassion, strength and love which ultimately engages us deeply with life itself.

Try to nourish yourself with others who are walking on this path to truth.  Have compassion for those who don’t have the resources or desire to join you.  Be happy for those who have found themselves but try not to concern yourself with those that refuse to accept you for who you are, simply wish them well and follow your destiny.

“All spiritual jouneys have a destination to which the travelor is unaware.  Most of us who start out on the yoga mat, do not realize that, if we dedicate ourselves to practice, its only a matter of time before the mat becomes an altar”

Stephen Cope

Greetings dear yoga students,

The practice of Bhakti Yoga is the yoga of devotion.  Every pose we take, every breath we inhale, every intention and action is practiced as devotion to the divine which lives both inside and outside you.  The deeper we penetrate our physical world through our asana practice, we realize the divine lives in all things physical and that the physical lives in all things spiritual.  The bhakti yogi seeks more than anything to develop a “direct, intense, personal relationship with the divine or simply with life itself”.

There are countless ways to practice Bhakti yoga.  Chanting spiritual mantras,  praying with beads, gardening in the earth’s soil, relishing the light in a loved ones eyes, playing with a child or finding compassion in your heart when it is needed most are all postures we can take to express our devotion to the divine forces that are all around us.  We can also come to our practice with dedication and reverence for this ancient science which, in turn, enables us to transform our own yoga mat into a sacred space where we come to be in the presence of the divine that is both inside, outside and in all things.

Yoga this Week – June 16, 2012

“Why should we be in such desperate haste to succeed, and in such desperate enterprises?  If a man does not keep pace with his companions, perhaps it is because he hears a different drumer.  Let him step to the music which he hears, however measured or far away”
                                      Henry D. Thoreau

Greetngs dearest yoga students,

How often do we try to keep pace with our companions?  Pushing forward towards an ideal when we’re not even sure we connect to its truth.  Our society, families, friends all have ideas of how we should live our life.  It is time now to find your own truth.  Listen closely to your heart as you approach a decision.  What truly resonates for you may be quite different from those around you. Do something because you understand why you are doing it deep down in your core and it makes sense for you and those around you.

Give yourself space to feel into the question, check in with your physical, mental and emotional energies, they are the guides to your intuitive nature which always knows what is right.  Take a breath, get yourself in a calm state and have the patience and faith to listen to what your higher self is telling you. Trust yourself enough to be guided from within, not because you feel you need to adhere to some arbitrary code that others have laid out for you.  We live and let live which means we also honor that others have their own path, we niether judge or retaliate; we honor their decision and go our own way to decide for ourselves.

Most importantly,  don’t be afraid to fail.  It is in taking risks, trying out new ways of being that we find ourselves and create the life we were meant to live.  Nothing would get done if we all waited untill we did it perfectly.  Encourage yourself with compassion, focus, vision and a little light hearted humor.   It is in the falls we take that we learn how to endure, create and make this world a better place for ourselves and others.

You cannot discover new oceans until you have the courage to lose sight of the shore.

**Sorry to say this again, but just in case you missed it:  Please be mindful as you drive into the culdesac.  There are two or three spots at the top of the culdesac just before the fire hydrant on the right.  If those spots are open, please try and park there and walk down if possible.  Otherwise, park your car head in and stay away from the basketball hoop that is opposite of my house (on the south side of the circle) as those are the neighbors that complained. Best to park facing my property.  Thank You**

Greetings Dearest Yoga Students,

We do not stand alone.  This journey through life is shared in countless ways.  What happens to you, happens to me.    When we release the dillusion that we are separate from everything around us, Ahimsa (non-violence) flows through us as easily as water flows down a steep mountain slope.  Insead of reserving your deep affection and attention for a select few, widen your circle of compassion and embrace with loving kindness everyone and everything around you.  When we give, we actually do receive.

During the long night at the Relay for Life, this was epitimized by the common goal of all who attended, contributed and whose lives have been touched by cancer. The teamwork that our Relayoga Warriors shared in was so heartwarming and brought us all that much closer as human beings who live, work and practice in the same community.  I was proud to be part of such an amazing event.  Much gratitude to you all for helping us reach our fundraising goal of $1,000, especially our yoga warriors, for making it happen.
