Yoga this Week – December 9, 2012

“Falling down doesn’t make you a failure, but staying down does”
Greetings dearest yoga students,
As many times as we get knocked down, it is the getting up that really matters. Remember to be gentle with yourself each time something gets in your way, delays your gratification or literaly takes you down. As you look on at someone elses success, remember that most likely, countless hours of work and failures brought them to the place they are now at. To achieve excellence, you must be willing to continue with faith each time you fail. A failure does not have to be a signal that your work is done but can really mean you are one step closer towards your goal. Be willing to fail, be willing to be vulnerable, be willing to look foolish as you go confidently in the direction of your dreams.

Yoga this Week – December 2, 2012

“Like the descent through layers of tension to rest in the release of Savansana (resting pose), Ishvara pranidhana provides a pathway through the obstacles of our ego toward our divine nature—grace, peace, unconditional love, clarity, and freedom.” Shiva Rea

Greetings Dearest yoga students:

Ishvara (Divine Power or God)-Pranidhana (Attentiveness or Surrender) means to  surrender our efforts to the divine power in our lives. This niyama (the last out of five observances outlined in Patanjali’s eight limb yogic path) personifies the idea of living in the truth that in our limited human state we simply do not have the control we like to think we do over our lives  and we do not always know what is best for us.  However, by paying attention in our yogic practices of meditation, asana or prayer we tap in to the source that guides us in our every decision allowing us to walk through our days with confidence and ease.

Ishvara Pranidhana is practicing detachment from our most safely laid plans,  learning to take that next step forward without knowing what will come next.   When we are able to look past the selfish desires of the ego by getting out of our own way,  we are able to be a clear channel of divine light, illuminating another’s way on this path of life.

“Through surrender the aspirant’s ego is effaced, and . . . grace . . . pours down upon him like a torrential rain.”

BKS Iyengar

Yoga this Week – November 25, 2012

If I can stop one heart from breaking, I shall not live in vain. If I can ease one life the aching, or cool one pain, or help one fainting robin unto his nest again I shall not live in vain. ~ Emily Dickinson

The message in the above quote is powerful and simple; Emerge from your own suffering and be of service in any small way and your life will have meaning and your heart will be full.  Never doubt what small acts of kindness can accomplish.  As long as we are guided by love and desire for service, let us never doubt ourselves and the path that we forge in our lives.
Kishori, our guest student and teacher, who after leaving India immersed in the yogic culture and found her way to our humble yoga room,  will be continuing on in her travels.  I thank her for inspiring us with her inner and outer beauty and knowledge.  She has expressed great gratitude to have found our precious yoga community and a space that encourages peace, empowerment, healing and sangha within the secular world we live in.   May we continue to encourage and support each other on this path.
Try not to skimp on your practice  as the darkness begins to envelope our days and the busy days of December come upon us.  Optimum health is the key to a happy and joyous season.

Yoga this Week – November 3, 2012

“We need to awaken to a common consciousness of all being inhabitants
of Earth. This consciousness is not to be found in some distant place. It will not be found on a computer screen. It lies in our hearts, in our ability to share the pain of our fellow human beings. It is the spirit that says:
“As long as you are suffering, whoever you are and whatever your suffering may be, I suffer also.”
Daisaku Ikeda
Hoping this email finds you all safe and sound. As I had mentioned to those of you who were in class this week, my home is open to anyone in need of a hot shower, electronic charging, laundry or just a some tea, coffee or company. It is so important that we know we can rely on each other for support for whatever we may need. The Shoreham Fire Department is collecting canned goods, clothing and toiletrees for hurricane relief to be distributed to those in need. You can also stop in there to pick up items if needed.
Keep praying for those whose Sandy’s devastation will linger; which for many will be much longer than a week, a month or even year. We are all so vulnerable to the fate that others have suffered. May you sincerely count your blessings and be aware of the abundance you have in your life.

Yoga this Week – October 28, 2012

“Compassion is not a relationship between the healer and the wounded. It’s a relationship between equals. Only when we know our own darkness well can we be present with the darkness of others. Compassion becomes real when we recognize our shared humanity.”
Pema Chodren
Hari Om Dearest Yoga Students,
There’s nothing like a good hurricane scare to help us recognize our shared humanity.  Leaning in to our own darkness, fear, humanness is truly the only way to expand our compassion for others. Having the courage to stand in our own pain and darkness allows us to open up to the immense compassion we have stored in our hearts.  It is from this opening that we reach out in true compassion for another’s pain. What is amazing to me is that in that reaching out, in that extended hand, smile, hug or encouraging word we give to another, we find the very thing that lifts our own pain and suffering.  Choose today to offer any help in whatever way you can to your neighbor, friend or family member to not only help them but to lift youself up as well.

Yoga this Week – September 29, 2012

“The habit is holding on, the practice is letting go.”
“When I begin a meditation the fullness of my experience, the fullness of my life, often rushes in and I have a moment of resistance. “How can I bare all of this life?” Then I remember that to be the space that can hold all of this joy, all of this sensation, all of this love, all of this sadness, all of this knowing, all of this not knowing, all of this life….. I just need to let go.”

Rolf Gates

Dearest Yoga Students,

How Do we bare all of this life. Sometimes it feels as if our cup is running over with joy and other times that same cup is full of many things we never wanted or asked for. If all things truly do pass, we must trust that in the letting go, we make the space to hold whatever it is we need to hold in the present moment. Realizing that whatever your cup is full of will eventualy slip through your fingers like water through sand. Holding on only enables our cup to remain full of the past, full of judgement, full of misperceptions. Letting go creates emptiness, clarity and that open space to receive the most sacred of all things, the present moment which somehow always has room to hold all the joys, sensations, love, sadness, knowing and not knowing we are meant to experience.

Aparigraha
greedlessness, non-attachment

The yogi feels that the collection or hoarding of things implies a lack of faith in God and in himself to provide for the future….By the observance of aparigraha, the yogi makes his life as simple as possible and trains his mind not to feel the loss or the lack of anything. Then everything he really needs will come to him by itself at the proper time.”

Iyengar

Good Morning Dear Yoga Students,

As this Fall draws us inward I wish for your eyes to see all the abundance that you already possess right now in this moment in this time in your life. One beautiful morning this past week I walked down to the shore, a little less than a mile from my house and I was embraced with the serene beauty that was all around me. It caused me to stop and I experienced a moment that seemed to have transformed into one of those magical moments suspended in time. I paused, connected to my breath, did some simple yoga postures and sat on a piece of wood to silently sit in meditation.. As the rythmic sound of the waves made their way into my mind and the gentle warm breeze carressed my skin, I felt so completely connected to all that was around me. The feeling of abundance and gratitude seemed to encapsulate my entire being. If we take even a moment to connect with all that is precious and dear to us in our lives right now, we allow the divine light to shine into our hearts. A moment like this can change your entire day from one that is ordinary to one that is full of miracles and we seem to lack nothing.

“Forget what others think of you, forget the future goal of achievement; arrive instead in this body/mind, attending to this present moment. This is the whole of practice.”.

                                          Sandy Boucher

Greetings Dear Yoga Students,

How often do we perform tasks, try to achieve or be something special in order to receive praise, boost our ego or stand out among our people?  We must remember that the intention of showing up, doing our best and allowing spirit to work through us is all we need to do. Being humble is not a sign of weakness, it is really a sign of great strength, stability and courage. Humility is to except the divine plan for your life, which is simply to open up to your unique gifts and use them to enrich those who cross your path in your unique situations.

Seek not to be commended in a worldly way but try to find that beautiful flow of muditha.  Muditha is achieved by doing what you love to do in your unique humble way  and in the doing you naturally spread peace, love and joy to others creating an energy that flows right back to you and ultimately becomes reward enough.  Feeling good by doing good in the present moment.  Forget what others think, focus instead on arriving where you are in the flow of your life.    This is your work, this is the whole purpose of practice:  to arrive, simply to arrive here and now….

….have patience with everything tht remains unsolved in your heart.  Try to love the questions themselves, like locked rooms and like books written in a foreign language.  Do no now look for the answers.  they cannot now be given to you because you could not live them.  It is a question of experiencing everything.  At present you need to live the question.  Perhaps you will gardually, without even noticing it, find yourself experiencing the answer, some distant day.

Keep coming back to your breath
Keep coming back to your body
Keep coming back to this moment
Keep coming back to who you really are.

No matter what life puts before you, keep coming back to all the beauty around you, to all the love inside you, to what really matters.  Even if you stray a thousand and one times, keep coming back to the truth of who you really are.  Keep coming back to the eternal, internal essence of you.  Keep coming back to what you know to be true; that the compassion and love you hold in your heart is meant as much for you as for every living being.  Keep Coming Back.
