Yoga this Week – February 23, 2013

Let’s not forget that the little emotions are the great captains of our lives and we obey them without realizing it.

Vincent Van Gogh

Svadhishthana (sva = vital force; adishthana = seat)

Element: water   Colors: orange   Sense: taste   Mantra: VAM

Location: situated at the base of the pubis between the genitals and the sacral nerve plexus

Deals with: emotional identity, creativity, desire, pleasure and self-gratification, procreation, and personal relationships

Governs: sexual organs, stomach, upper intestines, liver, gallbladder, kidney, pancreas, adrenal glands, spleen, middle spine, auto immune system

Psychological and Emotional Issues: irritability, shyness, guilt, blame, sexual obsession, power, money, control, lack of creativity, morality

Balanced Chakra: feeling compassionate, friendly, intuitive, vital, sexual, satisfied, prosperous, having a sense of belonging and humor

Hari Om Dear Yoga Students,

The Svadhishthana Chakra is about relationship. If our sacral chakra is balanced we can trust, feel free and allow ourselves to be deeply connected to others in our life. It is the seat of creativity, procreation and sexual energy. Its element is water which when allowed to flow freely, no forcing and no holding back, guides us down the river of our life. All of life is movement; relationships ebb and flow, children grow, our bodies change with each passing year as do the people, places and things around us. Connecting to the vital force of our Svadhishthana chakra allows us to flow moment to moment, open and receptive to our emotions allowing us to meet each passing day with creativity, confidence and truth.

Trust only movement. Life happens at the level of events, not of words. Trust movement.

Alfred Adler

Try this Meditation to Balance the Svadhisthana Chakra

Put your hands in your lap, palms up on top of each other. Left hand underneath
the right hand. The tips of your thumbs touch gently. Visualize the location and
color of the Sacral Chakra.
Chant the sound VAM  and silently say:  I trust as I open myself to others. Creative, sexual and emotional energy flows freely.  I express my true nature with confidence.

Yoga this Week – No Tuesday Morning Class

The ache for home lives in all of us, the safe place where we can go as we are and not be questioned.”

~ Maya Angelou

The Root Chakra Elements

Sanskrit Name:  Mulhadhara Meaning: “Root support” Root Chakra Element: Earth/Physical Root Chakra Keywords: “I Am” – grounded, present, safe, secure, healthy Associated Color: Red Musical Note: C Organs: Spinal column, legs, hips, kidneys and adrenal gland Root Chakra Consciousness: Survival, grounding and balancing the physical and spiritual life

The root chakra (Mulhadhara) is located at the base of the spine and radiates a rich color of red.  This chakra deeply connects us with the earth.  It is in this chakra that we ground into our lives, who we are and our sense of belonging.  When this chakra is balanced it tells us we are loved for who we are and that our basic needs for survival (love, food, shelter) are being met.  It affords us the inner confidence and courage to be who we truly are because deep inside our root, we know we are loved.  When we feel grounded and secure in our lives we become willing to take risks, to be vulnerable enough to make mistakes and to give to others more freely without fear of judgement, rejection or lack of resources.
See full size image
If you are feeling unbalanced in these areas, unsure of your life’s direction or your place in this world, try this simple Root Chakra Meditation.  Sit in an east comfortable cross legged position on the floor.  Connect to the base of your spine and feel the energy of the earth rising up.  Chant the sound of LAM, LAM, LAM and feel its vibration radiate throughout your entire body.  Think of the Mulhadhara chakra as a lotus flower grounded in the mud and muck of life’s suffering and pain and as you chant the sound of LAM, visualize this lotus rising up your spine, clean, clear, open and free…..end your meditation by repeating this mantra.
I forgive myself for being Imperfect
I forgive myself for Making Mistakes
I forgive myself for being a Learner in this Lifetime
So Hum
I am what I am

The Chakras System

Whether you are aware of the chakra system inside your subtle body or not, chakras or energy centers interact with your spiritual, emotional and physical bodies at every moment. The chakra’s are spirals of energy, one relating to the other, that contribute to our overall well being. In Sanskrit the word Chakra translates as “wheel”.  Each wheel spins a particular vibrational speed creating a vacuum that draws in anything it encounters on its level. All of life’s experiences have an effect on our entire selves whether positive or negative.  Negative experiences force our chakra’s to close as positive experiences enable them to open. In most of us as we move out of childhood, harsh reality begins to effect one chakra or another and they begin to become unbalanced and stop working in harmony with each other. We get stuck in cetain ways of being, not knowing why or how to move forward.. Blocked energy will eventually end up effecting you emotionally and physically as well.

Yoga, body awareness and meditation connects deeply to our chakra system and can act as a rebalancing tool. You may have experienced a deep release when you began practicing yoga. You may even have released cleansing tears or laughter during or after your practice. Each yoga pose directly effects one or more chakras. For instance, backbending opens up the heart and throat chakras while hip openers effect the root and sacral chakras.  Incorporating the color, sound and mantra to the corresponding chakra also has powerful healing qualities while meditating.

With each coming week, our study will focus on each individual chakra, begining at the root (Muladhara) all the way up the the crown (Sahasrara).  Below is a chart of the chakras, where in the body it is located and its’ individual charactoristics. Next time you feel stuck in a certain area, either emotionally or physically, you may want to check out the chakra associated with your discomfort and work with it in your own way. We do this work not only for ourselves but for the world;  When we clear our own inner energies, we can then be open to those around us, being of service with compassion, power, purpose and joy, expressing our dharma in the truest sense.

“Besides the noble art of getting things done, there is the noble art of leaving things undone. The wisdom of life consists in the elimination of non-essentials.” ― Lin Yutang

Hari Om Dearest Yoga Students,

In these chilly days of winter, give yourself permission to relax.  There is a time for action and a time for in-action.  Practice sitting amidst the caos, amidst the messy room, amidst the crowded space in your mind and see what happens.  Letting go of your “to do list” is just as important as scratching things off.  Our inner wisdom knows that we will never be done, that life is not a grand race to the finish line.  If our list keeps growing, consider it a blessing that you have work to do in your life.  However, there must also be time to take repose, to step back from all the doing and simply be in your life.  Let go of the non-essentials in your life today and make space to rest, cuddle, read, meditate, rejuvinate and….enjoy the journey by experiencing the finer things in life.

“You must learn to be still in the midst of activity and to be vibrantly alive in repose”

“What’s Done is Done”
Shakespeare
Greetings Dearest Yoga Students,
Do not allow yourself to get stuck in the past.  What has happened is already gone.  Like the wake of a boat, it is behind you and does not have to define or determine the direction you will take.  Let go and allow what has happened to shape your future on its own.  Everything that has happened has led you to this moment.    You cannot change the past, you can look and learn but in the end you must let go and set your sights on the future.  Although the future is there wide open for anyone to change, we have a tendency to hang on to the unfulfilling wish to change the past and live with the mantra, “If only”… this simply is wasted energy.  What’s done is done…. direct your energy to the future: meditate the present,  make plans, set intentions, transform your intentions into actions and let go of anything holding you back from creating the life you were meant to live.

Yoga this Week – November 25, 2012

If I can stop one heart from breaking, I shall not live in vain. If I can ease one life the aching, or cool one pain, or help one fainting robin unto his nest again I shall not live in vain. ~ Emily Dickinson

The message in the above quote is powerful and simple; Emerge from your own suffering and be of service in any small way and your life will have meaning and your heart will be full.  Never doubt what small acts of kindness can accomplish.  As long as we are guided by love and desire for service, let us never doubt ourselves and the path that we forge in our lives.
Kishori, our guest student and teacher, who after leaving India immersed in the yogic culture and found her way to our humble yoga room,  will be continuing on in her travels.  I thank her for inspiring us with her inner and outer beauty and knowledge.  She has expressed great gratitude to have found our precious yoga community and a space that encourages peace, empowerment, healing and sangha within the secular world we live in.   May we continue to encourage and support each other on this path.
Try not to skimp on your practice  as the darkness begins to envelope our days and the busy days of December come upon us.  Optimum health is the key to a happy and joyous season.

Yoga this Week – February 4, 2012

Greetings dearest yoga students,

This week brings us to our final yama in the first limb of yoga’s eight limb path.

Aparigraha
greedlessness, non-attachment

“The yogi feels that the collection or hoarding of things implies a lack of faith in God and in himself to provide for the future….By the observance of aparigraha, the yogi makes his life as simple as possible and trains his mind not to feel the loss or the lack of anything. Then everything he really needs will come to him by itself at the proper time.”

                                                                BKS Iyengar

It is fitting that the last yama is about letting go.  As we have seen with all the yamas, cultivating faith in our divine intelligence is a foundational requirement if we are to walk on our true, right path.  Working with aparigraha requires a letting go and a giving heart.  It is releasing the need to come from a place of lack and acknowledge that there is always enough.  Think about it…don’t we always seem to get what we need although we may not always get what we desire.  Learning to live from an attitude of abundance allows you to give freely and walk your path with serentity.  Greed is based on fear and fear leads us to cling to impermanant things (money, titles, people, things..).  Clinging will not lengthen your life, bring lasting happiness or keep you safe.

Attachment, hoarding and greed leads to making decisions that are based on fear.  Letting go of fear and cultivating faith empowers us to let go of  our competitive human nature and dive deeper into the interconnectness of all things which allows us to see that you and I are not separate.  The next time you notice yourself acting from a place of fear based greed, envy or unhealthy grasping, try repeating the mantra silently or quietly out loud:  “There is always enough, my higher power will always provide exactly what is needed and I am exactly where I need to be”. and see if your perception shifts to one of giving, acceptance and effortless love.

Yoga this Week – January 22, 2012

“When the practitioner is firmly established in continence;
knowledge, vigor, valor, and energy flow to him”
                                    Yoga Sutra II:38

Greetings dearest yoga students,

It is with great pleasure that I share the ancient teachings from Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras with you.  It is through transmitting this knowledge to you that I learn and grow in my own practice.  The ethical practices of yoga are life long, daily and pertinent if we are to bring peace to our lives, those immediately connected to us and the larger world.  These “codes for living” are not unique to those that follow the Sutras but variations can be found in nearly every spiritual tradition since the beginning of  time.  Try to connect with them on your own personal level with any other spiritual/religious path you believe in.

The fourth week in our studies brings us to Brahmacarya, which literally means to “walk with God”.  This is one of the more confusing yamas for me  as I have read many different explanations and perspectives.  The most general definition that I came up with that is most easily understood is that Brahmacarya means to practice moderation in all of our affairs.  This yama is most frequently associated with sexual energy and warns the practitioner to use their sexual energy wisely and with awareness with the highest intention.  However, the deeper I studied this yama what was revealed to me is that it truly is a call to practice moderation or temperance in all our thoughts, words and actions.

Practicing moderation brings us into balance with our vital energy.  When we find ourselves mindlessly dumping our energy into non-healthy or task-avoiding behavior, all we have to do is become aware, refocus and begin again.  This week as we explore the concept of Brahmacarya, I invite you to notice your relationship to food, money, sex, work, exercise, family, appearance, etc.  Notice if those things bring about a sense of well being or anxiety.  Look at your life without judgement and become aware of places you may be unconsciously dumping your precious time and energy into; either physically or simple obsessing in your mind.  Bring the preceding yamas into your practice by cultivating non-violence, honesty and deep contentment for what you have in your life, knowing you have everything you need to create equanimity and peace.

All Hatha Yoga practicies work to cultivate balance.  When you are truly balanced by practicing moderation in all parts of your life, you will ultimately gain true freedom and ease.  By actively restraining your indulgent, addictive, self-defeating behaviors you will create the atmosphere for all the “knowledge, vigor, valor and energy” that you have always desired to flow through just as the right conditions in nature allow snow flakes to fall effortlessly from the winter sky.

Satya – To seek and honor the truth in yourself, others and the world

(Sat-Truth + Ya-that which is of the essence)

“Probably the hardest form of this practice [commitment to satya] is being true to our own heart and inner destiny. Confusion and mistrust of our inner values can make it difficult to know the nature of our heart’s desire, but even when we become clear enough to recognize what truth means for us, we may lack the courage and conviction to live our truth. Following what we know to be essential for our growth may mean leaving unhealthy relationships or jobs and taking risks that jeopardize our own comfortable position. It may mean making choices that are not supported by consensual reality or ratified by the outer culture. The truth is rarely convenient. One way we can know we are living the truth is that while our choices may not be easy, at the end of the day we feel at peace with ourselves”

Donna Fhari

Greetings Dear Yoga Students,

Hope this email finds you well, embracing the truth of your life whatever is put before you at this moment. I hope you enjoyed practicing ahimsa (non-violence) and that you continue to do so as the year moves forward for Ahimsa is at the core of all yogic practices.
We now come to our second out of five yamas: Satya (truthfullness) which requires clear seeing, courage and steadfastness. Try and be aware of situations in which you tend to color or deny the truth with yourself or others. Be aware without judgement if you think another is bending what you believe to be the truth taking into consideration that we only see the world through our own individual lense. Practing satya is having the courage and faith to first clear your own lense and then act on what you see with a compassionate heart.

Yoga this Week – November 20, 2011

Gratitude unlocks the fullness of life. It turns what we have into enough, and more. It turns denial into acceptance, chaos to order, confusion to clarity. It can turn a meal into a feast, a house into a home, a stranger into a friend. Gratitude makes sense of our past, brings peace for today, and creates a vision for tomorrow.”

                                                                                         Melody Beattie

Hari Om Dear Yoga Students,

Hope this email finds you well grounded and centered in your life.  Thanks so much to all of you who attended the Restorataive Yoga and Acupunture class, it was an amazing thing for me to witness you all melting away your stress!!  The next session (January) already has five on the list so if you are interested let me know.

Look around you this morning.  Take in the sights and smells of Fall.  Breathe in that energy and allow your life to be enough.  Call to mind all you have been given.  All the blessing and hardships; even trials and tribulations are gifts in disguise.  The obstacles in our path allow us to move deeper into our human experience by humbling us enough to reach out to others for help.  In times when we are in the depth of hardship or confusion, when the world seems darkest, the miracle of letting go occurs.  Dark times can have the ability to move us away from the material into the spiritual; drawing us nearer to the divine source that carries us through the days when we simply cannot walk on our own.  Experiencing the light within the dark (yin and yang) we come to the realization that Santosha becomes possible no matter what circumstances surround us right now.

Santosha, or the practice of contentment, is the ability to feel satisfied within the container of one’s immediate experience.  ~~Donna Farhi

Be open, be receptive, be present for yourself and those around you today and through this holiday of thankgiving.  Be of service in anyway you can, look beyond your differences as you interact with your family and friends and honor each person for who they are today; knowing that their struggles are no easier than your own.  Don’t forget to honor yourself and your place in this life!  You were meant to be here at this time and hour so rejoice, be happy and most of all be grateful for all you have that truly matters!!

When at peace and content with oneself and others (Santosha), supreme joy is celebrated. (Nischala Joy Devi)
